I asserted, as I do here, that zealots like Glyn who treat Foss as if it were a religion are a problem that is not discussed often enough, and is the reason articles like this should be viewed with a skeptical eye that is careful to notice the true motivations of the author.
The default user configuration on Windows in a home environment is that any user has administrative rights...
That was the default, but since Vista that has no longer been the case. It's also incorrect to assume that users won't elevate privileges on any system to install software they think is legitimate or useful to them.
I disagree. Have any other embedded video techniques made it any easier? Was it easier to rip video files embedded with Real Player, Windows Media Player, or Quickslime? In almost all cases, the videos are cached to the hard drive with an FLV extension. On occasion I've ripped videos simply by coping them out Opera's cache without even needed to look at the page source. For the less savvy users there are a variety of freeware and commercial tools available from websites like Snapfiles. There are even extensions for Firefox made for a similar purpose.
I suspect you are using Linux, where CPU usage while displaying flash video is much higher, somehow running counter to the claim that everything Linux does is faster and more efficient than any other operating system.
Why is it that the ones (still) screaming the loudest about ME fail to deliver any real technical details other than, "OMG HORRIBLE!!!". Weak, very weak. I ran ME on 3 machines, one of which I used for nearly 3 years on a single install. Granted, I disabled system restore and removed a few components like WMI, but on the whole the system was more stable than Windows 98, which as I recall had a problem with mysteriously missing drivers cropping up after a reboot.
My point being, you can't for the life of you produce one technical fact as the WHY Windows ME was giving you problems, assuming you even used it at all and aren't just riding the hate bandwagon.
You sir, knocked my socks clean off. I had previously flagged you as a foe because I thought you were a world class prick, but you actually stood up and called "bullshit" for what it was. I'd like to add to your fine observations.
Everyone take an extra look at the submission. Specifically, David Gerard. Notice the spin he adds by using "hideously encumbered". Sleazy, huh? Wonder where he learned that trick? Turns out David is good friends with Roy Schestowitz and Twitter, all of whom regularly contribue to everyone's favorite flame-bait website, BoycottNovell. Fine, honest folks there. What's worse, when David isn't advertising his websites on Slashdot with wanna-be Onion News articles, he's a regular editor on Wikipedia.
Both running in VirtualBox. Both have been tweaked to start with as little as possible without special hardware tools.
Win XP:
30 second boot time
88.9 Megs Loaded from HD
16 processes
95.5 Megs Ram Used
HD footprint: 6.23gig
----------------------
Ubuntu 9.04:
42 second boot time
137.4 Megs Loaded from HD
106 processes
93 Megs Ram Used
HD Footprint: 2.80gig
Of course, you can compile your own stripped down kernel and use a desktop environment that rivals Windows 3.1 for "XP beating" speed, but it's amazing how wrong people's assumptions about Linux really are.
Bullshit, and you know it. Ignorance is ignorance. No matter if it's not noticing the file is named "Sales_Report.doc.exe" or surfing for porn and accepting that "video player software update" that you are prompted to install. Your link is a real gem though. So, you have an unpatched machine (never wise) on an open Internet connection with no firewall (not very smart), and you say the machine is at risk? Your talents and insight are truly wasted here on Slashdot.
The secret to Malware is suckering people into installing what they "think" is legitimate software. It's easier than you think it is and it doesn't matter which OS you are using, but since Windows has the largest market share it's the optimum target. It is not that Linux can't run Malware, it can, but to write such software for such a small target is not worth the effort. Nice troll though.
This "out of date bullshit" is what you get when people who don't know anything about Windows contribute to a discussion about it. Interesting and Insightful indeed.
Well, with Linux there is little choice. Due to it's obscurity and lack of popularity, unless you put all the software in one place it would be pretty difficult to use. Also, the number of packages isn't really something to brag about. First, many of those packages are not full featured software programs. Many are single use command line tools that do little except handle [stdin] and [stdout].
Second, check out Aminet's collection of Amiga software, a machine that has been dead for awhile. Around 32,000 packages, not including any graphics, music, demo or text files.
Not quite. Not right out of the box. You have to install Wine and hope it will work. If not, you have to fuck with the settings, install Wine Tricks, or browse forums looking for somebody who found a solution. Even if it does work it loads and runs slower than it would on a native machine.
Can I have a web cam conversation?
Yes.
Not always. Even if you are lucky enough to be using a supported web cam, the software selection on Linux is limited, you might not be able to use an offical client that supports web cameras. (I.E. Yahoo Messanger, MSN) Try having a web cam conversation with someone on Yahoo using Pidgin. Not happening.
Can I play games?
Yes.
This is downright deceptive. Again, the software selection of Linux is very limited. Most commercial games have no Linux port. Some might work with Wine, but with severe problems. There are some free games, but they aren't that great. If you love games, Linux is a very bad choice.
Good old Glyn. No doubt a favorite of Kdawson and many Slashdot folk. This is the same guy that idolized Stallman by using an analogy of a man who passes out a never ending supply of bread and then claimed ignorance when I showed this was a rip off of Jesus Feeding the multitude. A real class act to be sure.

I didn't catch that in the original submission; thanks for seeing it.
Good job. The word "Twitter" should have been a sign to look for trouble. You've been here how long?
Surprising, not posted by Kdawson.
I'm convinced it's the same dumb ass, or a group of them. Even making a valid complaint about moderation receives punishment. Fuck em'
Everything on Linux is weighed down by the X server. Desktop composition does little to help.
I disagree. Have any other embedded video techniques made it any easier? Was it easier to rip video files embedded with Real Player, Windows Media Player, or Quickslime? Most users of this website are FOSStards or Linux zealots. Most of those given mod points are idiots who abuse the moderation system. Coincidence?

So does Linux fucktard.
Ahh, former employee I see.
Ignorant people, who also happen to be ignorant enough to download and run any executable or installation without question.
The problem with those codecs are patents. That is completely irrelevant to users .

Can we get a summary without 'spin'?

This is why music should never be sold for money. This is the only song you will ever need and it's free.

This is an asinine quote that assumes all future Operating Systems should try and be Unix. I completely disagree. New ideas should be just that, new.
Actually, I need Linux+Wine for a few of my older games if I wanted such fancy things like sound.
Jesus Christ! Sound is awesome! The only thing better would be stereo sound. That would be like.... well... twice as much sound!
Seriously, you know you've been using Linux too long when you consider something as trivial as sound to be a luxury.

NTFS first off isn't right. Never has been.
Could you please be more vague?
