Unfortunately, this is extremely unlikely, as it requires national(global) planning of extreme significance (which capitalist democracy precludes) on the order of more than five years and is not initially going to be in the least profitable, therefore extremely unlikely to happen under global capitalism.
Maybe ten years ago it required a national plan, today individuals & companies are making their way into space and space travel. Maybe you missed the story that the $20 million tickets to space are SOLD OUT until 2009 I think that demostrated market demand is what Virgin & that other guy are hoping to sell their space traveling ticket to.
As people aquire more wealth and free time, they will be able to fund more exotic items like space travel.
Yes, I agree capitalism has flaws... what system doesn't? Corruption is a difficult thing to counter, even in a system with checks&balances.
Intelligence, genius and foresight are not a boon to a person, but are a terrible curse. The feeling of helplessness and sorrow is overwhelming and crippling.
Ignorance is bliss.. or "I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandpa... not kicking & screaming like the passengers in his car."
wouldn't that be funny if Microsoft folks were viewing this as another OS/2, where they'd steal enough technology to create their own Linux-like server product?
Huh? The technology in a GNU/Linux distro is freely available to anyone. That is one of points of open-source software, to allow others to see the tech and improve upon it. If one wants to re-distribute it, they have only to provide source code ala GPL.
1 - I've done some reading, and it indicates that DHCP just doesn't play well with VLANs, and it causes extra CPU overhead. How bad is this, really? I use DHCP primarily to ease adminstration, so IPs are managed in my DHCP and DNS servers.
I haven't experienced any oddities with DHCP and VLANs(both layer-2 & 3). Extra CPU overhead is just the broadcast traffic involved. The ease of adminstration vastly out-weighs any minor extra cpu load.
How do you start getting your head around SNMP? I haven't had much luck finding "getting started" guides, and anything I have found seems to assume more knowledge than the basically none that I have. I get the impression that though my switch doesn't support it, if I had SNMP traps working, I could segregate PCs on VLANS based on their MACs, etc.
net-snmp & mrtg are a good way of getting your feet wet. snmpwalk(part of net-snmp) is a useful tool for exploring the device.
I totally agree, and that was my point. Missed by most.
I think you missed my point. The internet is just a mirror. So your statement "The internet is an extremely dark place." is really you commenting that the world is very a dark place.
I can only suggest that you take a break and find some goodness to focus on to replenish your spirit. A few moments everyday to appreciate that which is good in your life and the darkness won't seem so powerful, so overwhelming that you're willing to trade away your freedom to feel safe.
My objection is to allowing the dark people to hide, permanently.
And what of those that wish to speak out anonymously against entrenched evil? Are they not in need of a place to hide? Who decides who's "dark" and who's "light"? You? Gulity until proven innocent?
A hammer can be used to build house or bash in your skull. Should all tools that can be used for evil be outlawed?
That which can be used for good, can also be used for evil.
My point is, that by being "responsible" about my actions, I have the freedom to act.
You don't believe in the concept of "Free Will"? You are free to act, regardless of whether your actions are responsible or not.
Morality by fear isn't morality, it's just living in fear.
What worries me, is that this Guy, instead of asking the world at large for help, has provided a legal precedent which will certainly be abused in the coming months/years.
Self-reliance should be applauded. Either way he did ask the world for help, he asked his local legal framework for help. The "world at large" can be as close as your local courthouse.
Appeals can be abused, should they be gotten rid of?
Until some truly awful event, is so uncontrevertible, it can over turn the original decision. Who has to die for that? A child? An African? An African child? And who will scream about "right wing extremism" then? Or catholic cover ups?
Whose life is more important than anonymous free speech?
Intangible things like Freedom are hard to weigh & balance against tangible things like a child life. Which is why the whole "Think of the children" mantra sells well to the public. But if one were to actually take a moment and think about it... preserving Freedom for future generations actually is "thinking of the children".
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The decision was wrong, and only time will prove me right. For what it is worth, I think you and I actually agree.
I am sorry I have done such a poor job of explaining my position, then. I think we differ greatly on at least three points 1) You don't seem to believe in anonymous free speech 2) You default to seeing how something can be used for evil, where I tend to see how something can be used for good. 3) You have way more faith in law enforcement than I do

Microsoft's engineers absorb as much practical working knowledge as possible about Linux internals from Novell/SUSE people
Why would Microsoft need to partner with a linux distro to "learn about the Linux internals"? The kernel is developed in the wide flippin' open public. Full sources are readily available. If Microsoft wanted to learn about any GNU/Linux dustro, they just have download it. I'd guess Microsoft has a few developers around that know C.
Samba is a seperate project... it is not Novell/SUSE technology. So if MS works with Novell on improving Samba interoperability with Windows, Novell would still be required by the GPL to release the source... which would allow others to benefit from work. One of the requirements of distributing code under the GPL requires that the code be free from patent infrigments.
Only Novell specific/grown code will be afforded the "convant not to sue" protection, as it probably won't be released under the GPL. Possible examples would be the Mono project being released under a non-GPL license. (is it already?)
Should the "authorities" be able to get a list of books you've checked out? Should anonymous pamphleteering be banned?
Would you like the person next door, to be able to publish pictures of your kids on the net, and then hide his tracks. How would you even know he did that? How do you know he hasn't already done that? Maybe some CTV operators in Britain are already doing that. Do those cameras make you feel safe now?
Wake up people. This is not about freedom. Law is about freedom. In "Free" countries it is suppose be that which isn't explicitly denied is permitted.
Has anyone asked what the plaintiff has to hide? The concept of "Innocent until proven guilty" doesn't ring any bells?
Freedom means being free to both follow & break the law. Freedom means being responsible for your actions. Freedom is an elusive asset that people seem all too willingly to trade away for a false sense of security. People too easily forget there are worst things than terrorists & criminals.
The internet is just a mirror of human nature; both the brightest & darkest sides of it. One can't control or "correct" human nature by controlling the internet. Attempting to do so is a fool's errand.
not even silly rules about stripping citizenship from convicted felons.
Hmmmm, wonder if that has anything to do with Australia starting life as a British penal colony? Sorry, couldn't restist./don't have anything against Down Under
Just because a book is out of print doesn't mean a library won't have a copy of it available to be checked out. I think that is one of the "jobs" of libraries.... a book repository. Rumor has it that is a library keeps a copy of everything ever published.
Regardless, the availablity of a book(s) on the subject isn't the problem with article. The problem is Wikipedia doesn't allow posting of original research material, i.e. the original author isn't suppose to post his theory. Supposedly someone else could, tho./shrug
PBS doesn't have ads during their shows, just donation drives couple of times a year. Not sure if they get any federal grants or not. But PBS has been around for a while. I encourage everyone to support their local PBS station.
If you want the incumbent out, why not just vote for the guy running against him. If the person is un-opposed, then write yourself in.
That could be an interesting project.... 1) Publish list of all un-opposed incumbents 2) Publish list of write-in candidates (one or two people for each incumbent) 3) ??? 4) democracy
Not voting is a better way of protesting the lack of candidates that appeal to you?
Maybe the halloween candy has rotted my brain but your logic escapes me. With poor voter turn-out wouldn't the parties just increase their efforts on appealing to those that do actually get out to vote, as those are the people that are going to get them elected. With poor voter turn out, the candidate actually has less people he or she has to appeal to.
Poor voter turn out might be noticed but it doesn't improve the field of candidates.
CTRL + Page Up and CTRL + Page Down will move you left & right thru the tabs in Firefox; just like gnome terminal. The one snag with firefox is if there is a text entry box that grabs your cusor.
That is very interesting and I honestly didn't know that. Thanks.
Then to offer protection for the current US administration, it depends on if the war in Iraq is a war of aggression or not. If the Iraqi war is a war of aggression, then the US would have been the first to break conventions. So that would free Iraqi allies from being bound by the conventions, yes?
Winter gasoline blends are phased in as the weather gets cooler. September 15th is the date of the first increase in RVP, and in some areas the allowed RVP eventually increases to 15 psi. This has two implications for gasoline prices every fall. First, as noted, butane is a cheaper blending component than most of the other ingredients. That makes fall and winter gasoline cheaper to produce. But butane is also abundant, so that means that gasoline supplies effectively increase as the RVP requirement increases. Not only that, but this all takes place after summer driving season, when demand typically falls off. These factors normally combine each year to reduce gasoline prices in the fall (even in non-election years). The RVP is stepped back down to summer levels starting in the spring, and this usually causes prices to increase. But lest you think of buying cheap winter gasoline and storing it until spring or summer, remember that it will pressure up as the weather heats up, and the contained butane will start to vaporize out of the mix.
And that's the true tale of why gasoline prices fall back in the fall, and spring forward in the spring.

Nice troll. Even got modded up to "3, Interesting".
Very enlightened view-point... the ends justify the means.
The Oil Drum has a good article on gasoline blends and how it affects prices.
Why Prices Fall in the Fall
Winter gasoline blends are phased in as the weather gets cooler. September 15th is the date of the first increase in RVP, and in some areas the allowed RVP eventually increases to 15 psi. This has two implications for gasoline prices every fall. First, as noted, butane is a cheaper blending component than most of the other ingredients.
