I don't feel jealous at all. Just very sorry for the thousands of people who are put out of work by this. Also the fact that *everyone* will need to stoop to this to survive (after all that is why the law is there, which we are now discarding) I feel sad for what the taxi indistry stands to become unregulated, and the seeming never ending reminder that capitalism is just a race to the bottom.
The poster is saying that he hates Uber because it will make a few people rich while putting thousands out of work. If they had done something revolutionary then fine, but all they have done is ignored well established laws. Laws that are there to protect the jobs of many people.
Uber is like the non-handicapped person that parks in a handicapped spot in the parking lot, and then smugly thinks to themselves that they cracked some sort of code to society that entitles them to be the closest.
The marketplace HAS. They allowed themselves to be regulated. I'm sure at that time everyone got something out of it. The whole industry is safer, and they operate in more of a closed market. Once a marketplace is regulated, it needs to be regulated across the board. If Uber is allowed to persist then it affects the entire market. It's fairly clear that people won't generally care about the quality of the cars until they are the 1/1000 that destroys their life in an accident and with having no coverage. People don't think of that stuff when they're in a hurry.
Long story short, soon all cars are uninspected personal cars because it is the only way the market works any more.
The funny thing is that I'm sure there are 1000 people out there who thought of this idea but just didn't become a billionaire on it because they didn't want to break the law. Now Uber comes along the bully on the playground and is allowed to persist.
Are we really so far from that? What is the real level of mobility upwards in status in America today? More and more people have been falling into the 'born hard working and stay hard working' camp since the 70's. One must only note the H1B visa situation and the 'free intern' situation to see that.
And people don't revolt because governments have superior force. The most impoverished will obviously try to revolt first. Hm, were do we see impoverished standing up against authority? Ferguson, Cleveland, Baltimore.. These events happened before, but the difference is that the population is more pissed off and frustrated.
What I don't understand is why this business model is allowed to work for Uber, but not for napster, thepiratebay, or more recently, Grooveshark. All of these entities thought that they would invent themselves in the face of laws that they considered unfair yet only Uber is the one that is allowed to survive among them?
It ensures a certain minimum of safety. When you release the floor, everyone will devolve into total crap. Crap for the consumer, crap for the industry.
No one wins unless everyone is forced to a certain common minimum.
Democracy has rules! It is not just about everyone rampantly going around doing what they want!
If what you say is true, then the existence of any government at all is purely undemocratic.
One thing is for sure, some poor Uber driver's life will be destroyed the first time there is an accident causing injury with another uninsured driver. Uber won't be standing behind them.
I used to think a company wouldn't make a web service designed to lure people into a situation where they and their friends would be monitored. That is shady to me, and interestingly it was Facebook where I really first noticed that. I guess it remains to be seen whether a company can start a web service designed to help people promote and yet still find a way to have it promote their agenda.
I recently coded a highly dynamic webpage using jquery and to my surprise it ended up working in all versions of IE, all versions of Firefox, and Chrome on Android. This greatly enhances the availability of my site. How do I get such compatibility for free without using jQuery?

.. established local law does not equal thinking outside of the box. It just means you can take the criminal aspect one step further.

The 1000 people are the real losers in this.
Maybe everyone can't be in the top 1% but why does the top 1% have to have such a portion of the wealth?
Once a watch can go a week without being charged, then I will consider.
Yeah but you're still stuck charging it every day. Unless you want to push it to two days and go without it for 1/2 the second day.

Thank you, this is the best I've heard it said. I wish I had a mod point.

The whole Uber thing is nothing more than Karl Marx's prediction that capitalism would end up being a race to the bottom.
Removing government controls at this point would just get us there more quickly.

.. but I may have gotten a few infections from the pages I had to visit to use it.
I'm in the old fart category, you insensitive clod!

I think they are a double edged sword. They get taken advantage of, yes but you can't operate without them altogether either.
start a web service to promote a good cause on the surface*, yet still find a way to have it serve their agenda

There are plenty of applications on Windows that make playlists and manage metadata. Mediamonkey is very good. Not as pretty but very good.
If anyone knows that money solves all ills, it is an independent corporation. They just have to decide the right way to solve their ills with it.
Did iTunes ever really work on Windows?
