Are you aware of the concept of fiction? That the effacacy of Newspeak in suppressing ThoughtCrime was something that Orwell *made up* out of his imagination, rather than basing on it on sociological theory.
To be fair, they also gave us most of "The Band", Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, the Barenaked Ladies, the utterly fantastic Be Good Tanyas and, erm, William Shatner's "Transformed Man".
Does that mean we can discount ESR or Linus when they talk about closed source,
Yes, pretty much. Actually, we can discount ESR on everything, because he's a grade A pseud.
Linus, on the other hand, tends not to make idiotic generalisation about closed / open code. He just says "This way works for me", and gets on with it.

Fonzie jumping the shark was not 'very very lame', but when the show clearly reached its peak
Your wrong (as incidentally is the frontpage of jumptheshark.com. The OP was right. The Shark Jump was lame, and indicative that the Happy Days writers were entirely devoid of ideas (much as the Simpsons writers have been for 2 or 3 years). It wasn't the peak, it was the point at which the decline was irreversible.
You misheard. He actually says "Greedo." He's defending Greedo's honour -- a hard working and thorough bounty hunter -- from the vicious accusation of having shot first.
A single counter example is enough to refute a general statement.
But no-one made a sufficiently general statement. No one said "always has lower TCO". The Microsoft studies are specific, and are neveer dumb enough to make the kind of sweeping generalisations that single counter-examples can refute. In fact, they often just just give anecdotal examples themselves.
When you type in a wrong address at the moment which doesn't exist, you are automatically taken to either a site search engine, which is pure crap
Thats on the Web.
But DNS is used for more than web look ups. If DNS returns spurious results for gethostbyname(), a typo in a SSH command, or nntp request will be seriously bjorked.
I've no problem with Firefox (or IE) sending me to a search engine when I try to connect to a typo-ed web page: this is a reasonable policy to set at the application level
The fact is that, when you outsource, you lose all quality control, regarding the employees.
Only if your human resource dept are so bone idle that they don't check out to whom they are outsourcing. If you outsource important work to the congenitally clueless, its your own fault if they screw up.
On many news sites, including this one, its common to see remarks like:
Outsourcing is OK for repetitive or unchallenging tasks, but you can't get the cutting edge / high quality / knowledgeable programmers that you'll get in the USA
How does it feel to have your skills and knowledge continuously disparaged by people with little or no experience of working with Indian programmers?
idea that the universe is the product of the combinatorial effects
Penrose's spinor group has been working on similar foundations for 30 years, and they've actually produced some interesting results, with applications in Superstrings and quantum gravity. By comparison, Wolfram is just a bored dilletante scribbling on the back of an envelope.
Hutton is a *Labour* peer, appointed by guess who? Yep, Tony Blair.
Wrong again. meathead. Hutton was enobled on Tuesday, 14th January 1997. Who was Prime Minister in January 1997? John Major, of the Conservative Party.
Jeez, you're a loud mouth for someone who is so ludicrously ill-informed.
No he's not, he's a Law Lord. Law Lords are cross-benchers. And Hutton is usually considered one of the most conservative of the Law Lords : it was he who overturned the detention of General Pinochet and stopped his extradition to Spain.
And if my aunt had bollocks, she'd be my uncle.

And, indeed, that is the common usage. But thats not what it originally meant. See here for a fuller description (a page I wrote, ages ago).
I believe every word of this article because A Russell Jones certainly has no vested interest in Microsoft based web solutions.
See here for example.
Chill out, its just entertainment.
To repeat a popular statistician's aphorism:This has been a public service announcement.

And only 5 hours after the first post.
Man the slashdot community is excited by this story.

Get a disposable ebay-only address, and anything that looks like its from ebay but *isn't* to that address can safely go in the Spam-bin.
