    Of course this was done in Europe, their monopoly-money machines work better than in the US (Russia has no money, monopoly or otherwise).

    You on the other hand have been watching to many american films... It is practicly impossible to do anything with an ICBM (or a whole bunch of them) against an asteroid.

    A new sense of global panic and anarchy is much more likely.....

    No, just let Mr. Laden say that muslims should strike back with terrorist attacks if the asteroids are harmed. According to Mr Powell that is enough evidence to send the entire US army to 'disarm' the asteroids.

    maybe the poster is trying to do it for security cameras.

    If that is the case he should have a look at motion it can handle multiple videodevices and even use multiple inputs on each device.

    The trick is probably in the percentage, if they narrowed it down they would be less sure....

    Likewise I can do a much more accurate estimate:
    'I'm 99.9999999999999999% sure the universe has an age'

    Nuclear reactors work on a principle called fision, not fusion.
    Whit fusion of deuterium you get a whole lot less of the bad kinds of radiation.

    OK I'll bite....

    There is a very good reason for keeping the 2.4 GHz stuff at a low power.
    The equipmend produces various frequencies some of which are in the frequencies the device is intended to transmit, others outside the allowed bandwidth are not, but they are so small that they don't do any harm. But when you go boost the power these unwanted frequencies will also get amplified (and in some cases they will get even more amplified then the intended frequencies).
    What you get is a device that is jamming other things on frequencies you didn't even knew it was transmitting on.

    802.11b devices have been tested and approved for use with a certain maximum output power, they used them for something they were not approved for for a good reason.

    How do you know they were not interfering anybody, if that is the case how did the FCC ever found out about it??? Appearantly they were not completly 'out in the boonies' were they?

    The problem is that there is not just one group (the wifi fans) wanting such bandwidth, they have to split it up between many potential users.
    Sadly the last years more and more bandwidth goes to the highest bidders taking it away from others that could use it for other interessting things.

    Think radio astronomy and HAM users....
    (OK I'm a bit biased as I am a HAM myself....)

    At best you could say they support i386-linux not linux... and you are still limited to a subset of all the available kernels...

    They have linux drivers, they don't support linux.

    Because for the price of a solar adapter capable of feeding a pc+monitor you can probably buy several simputers....

    But it would need conciderably more effort to get to work....
    It needs far more power which you will need to generate. The simputer only needs a litle bit that can even be generated by hand...
    Its also a lot more portable.

    Just feeding the starving isn't going to help much.
    You need to find a structural solution.
    Besides there are plenty of places (e.g. India) were starvation is not the biggest problem, but lack of education. And there things like this will help.
    You instantly get all the knowledge from the internet (insert porn joke here :) for free.
    E.g. a farmer could learn himself the latest new techniques for increasing the amount of crops...

    Tidal movment (not sure if I spelled it right...) is mostly situated around the equator, its hardly noticable around the poles. And completly gone if you are situated at the geographical poles.

    You can hot plug/unplug usb devices with any recent kernel that supports usb..... I'm pretty sure the same can be done with firewire.
    ACPI has nothing to do with this.

    The horror, I have lived my entire live without the FREEDOM of getting shot by a trigger-happy firearm owner....

    Firearm owners tend to play judge a little to easy (else they didn't need a gun, do they?). In a good society guns are controlled, and the controllers are controlled by an elected government and thus are controlled by the people themselfs.... You are using guns protecting yourself, you just don't give them to people who don't need them.

    That doesn't matter, they are distributing it and since they are distributing it in large numbers (not the 'copy from friend' type of distributing) they have to make the source available to their customers. Even if they didn't modify it.

    It is, but for other reasons.....

    He took the number of registered developpers for a project. This is a very bad way of counting..
    I manage a few projects myself and if I take one as example namely motion it clearly shows:

    Motion is registered at sourceforge (I used their CVS for a while but it turned out not to be my prefered way of working) and the developpers list is VERY short.
    However on the motion mailinglist their are far more people participating. Some actually contributing code, some just helping testing and helping the newbies. They are the community, and it works. I also once in a while get a patch for a fix from and never hear again from that person... They are not listed as developpers for the project but they sure contribute.
