Hi! I've got a slightly used life that you can have for a mere $.25! I haven't used it much lately, and it's apparent that you need it more than I do.
It might surprise you to know that April fools jokes are run not only by news *sites*, but by the people that put out physical, dead news trees, too. It does back a wayz.
To say that/. should only post true things is ludicrous. They post untrue things (in a sense) every day. Maybe there should just be a standing policy of marking everything with an exaggerated, satirical bent: "ATTENTION ALL MORONS: THE FOLLOWING ITEM IS *NOT* *TRUE*".
ummm....not to burst your bubble, but just because someone doesn't contribute to linux doesn't mean that they're a "glamour user". you seem to be assuming that everyone who uses linux is either a programmer or a posing leech.
this sort of misses the point: operating systems aren't written *for* programmers; they're written *by* programmers. they're used by programmers, sysadmins, and joe schmoes.
jwz isn't exactly *my* age, he's actually prolly a good bit older than i am. as a matter of fact, he may not even be *that* much younger than the other guy, for all i know.
jwz is one of the few latter-day saints to become known by their initials. i mean, you know GLS, RMS, ESR, ETC., but it's pretty kewl when someone your age is an undeniable net.god. (also, he's much less insane than the *other* TLA that worked on (l)emacs). so, it's undeniably sad to see him go.
it's also ironic to see this happen at a time when mozilla.org was finally producing a product that was starting to look like an early version of a real contender, rather than a cobbled-together POS.
however, maybe it's a good thing:
a) maybe jwz can get out there and do something he really enjoys now, which might be good for all of us:), and
b) maybe this will act as a wakeup call. with jwz gone, mozilla can go one of two ways: either somebody's gonna do *something*, or it's gonna die.
c) maybe all of us losers with delusions of grandeur will go download the tarball again...
I don't think/. is the slowest site I visit. It's not *terribly* fast, but a lot of times it's faster than my.yahoo.
The argument about whether or not Linux can serve a million hits a day sort of misses the point: a million hits a day, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't require very high-end hardware. I'm pretty sure a two-processor Sun UE 450 could handle that with no problem, and that's a *workgroup* server. You'd need throughput of about 4MB/second for the peak, including processing....yeah. Should be doable.
It's NOT voluntary! Hackers everywhere are being forced to pay Red Hat to support this software! When are we going to stop the madness and INSIST that the binaries be free, the source be free, the documentation be free, and the SUPPORT be free?
Oh, sure, we COULD write our own documentation, and we COULD look in the support newsgroups, but that IGNORES the fact that someone, somewhere, is PAYING ACTUAL MONEY for these things. It's an anomoly, and it creates an IDEOLOGICAL impurity. Does not compute! *clank* Does not compute! *clank*.
Not only must we insure that these things are free so that ALL computer people can help their fellow women and men achieve the NIRVANA that is the INEVITABLE UTOPIAN RESULT of absolute freeness, but the people who have PERPETRATED these travesties must be made to CORRECT THEIR WRONG THINKING. They must be made to admit their mistakes through self-criticism, and, if they persist in such counter-revolutionary agitation, re-education through labor becomes a real option.
SunOS does *not* refer only to the kernel. Solaris refers to the "operating environment" and also includes OpenWindows and CDE and...prolly some other stuff. But SunOS refers to the BSD (4.x) or SVR4 (5.x) *operating system*. That's what the 'OS' stands for.
The windowing system for Linux isn't written by the FSF. The desktop environments aren't written by the FSF. Hell, the *printing system* isn't written by the FSF. Not that Linux has much of a printing system.
I don't really care what people call Linux. I don't, really. (Of course, I'll call it Linux, because two syllables is really the limit of my vocabulary). But this particular argument is pretty damned facetious.
awright. nobody's gonna confuse me with an al gore fan, but there are two kinds of people in america: those who pronounce route 'root', and those who, um, don't.
so, what's wrong, in theory, with saying 'rooters' instead of 'rowters'?
the pronunciation of 'route' is largely regional, btw, so of *course* it sounds funny when somebody sez it wrong.

To say that

Ever try to fit an 8" wide device in a 5.25" bay?
The relatively large amount of CD-form-factor infrastructure around also makes life more convenient.
Plus, 8" disks would be too damned big.

he sure *seems* a helluva lot younger, tho.

so, i personally wanna wish jwz good luck.

you are aware that bruce is, at the very least, a four-star general in said army, no?

I'll bet you have no idea how ironic that comment is.
