"But I've grown more than a little sick of Chicken Little, crazy-eyed alarmists preaching apocalyptic sermons with utterly ridiculous language that makes it sound like the fucking end is nigh if mankind doesn't abolish all industry NOW NOW NOW RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!"
Can you name a single person who has advocating abolishing all industry?
There are several different proposed methods. Fast-growing trees and crops (that are then turned into biochar and buried), enhanced weathering by grinding and spreading silicate materials such as olivine, ocean iron fertilization to increase phytoplankton blooms and increase carbon transport to the deep ocean (where it will stay for a couple thousand years). Unfortunately they are all expensive and it is uncertain how effective any of them are.
"They are not being paid under the current system, and they would arguably make *more* under a "copyright doesn't exist, pirate whatever you want" system."
And arguably, they'd make far less.
That turns your recordings into advertisements for your concerts. Which means you *want* them spread as far as they can - you *want* people to pirate your music, because that means more people are likely to shell out $$ for tickets, and t-shirts, and other merchandise.
With the premise that only music that can be performed in concert halls AND bring in enough concertgoers is deserving of being made. And what about movies?
"I guess the guy who made the bench in the park should get to choose who sits on it, and should get certain amount every time someone sits on the bench."
If a guy spent a year of his time and money designing a bench to sell to parks, then no, other parks should not just be able to swipe the design.
"It's one thing to download a song or movie, say "That was crap", and erase it. It's another thing to actively copy millions of them, or assist others to do it, and distribute those copies to other people."
For money. Pirate Bay is a bunch of people who wanted to make money from selling movies, but don't know how to make the movies themself.
"I know it's fun to get stuff for free (I do it myself), but authors still deserve to be paid. Some of ye appear to say they do not (which is why you oppose copyright)."
So you don't accept the clearly logical slashdot argument that because artists make too little money from selling what they make, that we should take steps to insure that "too little" amount plummets to zero?
which is exactly why I don't play rock, paper & scissors. it's a game of who's the better cheater
Interesting; I don't play rock, paper & scissors because it's extremely boring. I thought that was the reason for everyone else too but I guess I was wrong.
In order to dramatically cut down on piracy and actually see an increase in legitimate sales. The hardcore downloader is not going to buy the stuff in any event; the casual ones may actually do so if you make it too hard to download.
They rely on the constant influx of American export dollars and a hard-working populace that is willing to go without. The Chinese people are getting more and more insistent on actually getting something for their work, and there is no way China will be able to sustain its current growth, particularly where so many local governments are going into ridiculous debt to build airports that don't actually have planes landing in them.
You have no clue what it was like back in the early 80's; nuclear war was a horrifying possibility, and if a town wanted to make a statement against the idiotic proliferation of nuclear weapons then good for them.
Riiiiiight, because where Argentina failed, ECUADOR will succeed. Really. Ecuador.
Actually Bill the Galactic Hero seemed more like a parody of one book specifically, Starship Troopers. Did a good job of skewering Heinlein I thought.
Yep, telling your kid that they're failures has always been a great way to turn them into educated, stable, confident adults.
Yep, there are noticeable changes in the brain from depression, and the more depressive periods you have the worse off you are long-term. A great book on depression is Peter Kramer's Against Depression, which summarizes a lot of the current research on the mechanisms of depression and the effect it has on the physical structure of the brain: http://www.amazon.com/Against-Depression-Peter-D-Kramer/dp/0143036963/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344986854&sr=8-1&keywords=peter+kramer Highly recommended.
I would cave if Microsoft gave me $600 million too.
"Apparently they forgot that IBM's lawyers were INFINITELY nastier predators than ANYONE they could afford to hire."
Ehhh..I dunno. SCO had Boies Schiller, IBM had Morrison Foerster, they're both kind of operating at the same level.

I believe that the fallout from nuclear weapons has very short half-lives.
"Speak for yourself. That view is hardly universal."
Well, no, if you incorporate the sociopath demographic.

If I wanted to speculate in near-worthless currency I'd just wait until Greece brings back the drachma, which should happen in a few months...
Ahhh, VLC. The only free, open source software I've ever seen that was just as good as the hype.

"the weathermen can't do a good job predicting what the temperature will be tomorrow,"
Really? The weathermen around here do an excellent job of forecasting several days in advance.
"apparently for some political agenda."
Not nearly as driven by a political agenda as your own post, though.

You know, you right-wingers would be more bearable if you didn't snivel so much. Man up, man, and stop whining so much.
What does this have to do with nuclear weapons?
China is due for a crash; they have gone on a construction spree that has led to a bubble and a nation full of empty office buildings and airport.
