I don't know a software company that wouldn't implement such a strategy to ensure that their software wasn't perfect if they had the budget to do so. As with all things of this nature it comes down to the money vs. quality contest. The better the quality the more it cost to produce but unfortunatly its not an even rise up the scale. It may cost you 2X$ as much to improve quality by 50% but it might cost you another 4X$ to get the next increase of quality of only 25%. Even the article points out that, that the Shuttle software is the most expensive in world and it still is run on old computers. Give me the same scale of budget/time and I'll give you a windows operating system that a fanatical Linux user would be hard pressed to complain about. Or, even better. I'll use the funds to set up an open source group to make Linux as versatile and useful across the board, from beginners to the "Linux guru's".
The problem with that idea is that the guy probably has "sensitive" stuff on his laptop all of the time so it would be normal and everyone gets careless at times. (I remember the last time I got careless with the ebola virus, you wouldn't believe the mess I caused, bodies were everywhere). Besides its not like he wasn't watching it, it was snatched from him (as in purse snatched).
He has a wonderfull idea but he should use scanners and a good OCR to speed the process. He doomed the project to failure,it would seem, because he isn't adapting to new technology.
Can you tell me when there hasn't been social change and prejudice. I'm old enough to have seen dramatic change in the world and young enough to be impressed by it, but I doubt this change will be any worse/better than any other that has ever occurred. Be real people. The great thing about being human is that we adapt.
Remember: Life is nothing more than a game with serious consequences.
If this is a good GUI, then I can easily see Linux turn into the next Microsoft. Ease of use is the key to selling alot, which means market share, which means power...
I have been on both sides of this fence: People always have choices. Instead of buying that new bass boat, try taking a night course in VB (Lord knows there is enough jobs out there). I've hung out with the poor down trodden blue collared labor worker. It's all about the choices people make. I'm not about to "feel sorry" for them or anyone for that matter. You choose your job and those things you will put up with. I come from a dirt poor family so don't say it is about economic reasons these people can't lift themselves up. I'm sure all of the bright people here can come up with many excuses for them but don't do it, they can come up with to many as it is. (I'm not as mean as I sound, really)
Unfortunatly most people are very much like Dinosaurs. They plodd along making slow advancement in the world, but usually it is steady. What you want is for people to make leaps ahead, skipping over the ground between today and the day after tomorrow. For the masses it won't happen and it probably isn't a wise thing to do. For individuals it is the only way for things to occur. While I'm leaping across vast areas in my particular niche you should be doing the same in yours. This way the whole of society will be brought forward. These people who go around wanting everyone to join the bandwagon at the same time do not understand that it doesn't work that way and besides the axles would break.
No wonder why you sent this post in as A.C. Everytime something is ported from Windows to Linux it is announced like a great victory... Windows has its uses but definitly so does Linux.
WDM is for device drivers. No wonder you don't like Windows. It seems that you never learned how to use it like it seems that you learned Linux. People hate what they don't know. hmmmm...
It seems that you haven't tried to do more that use a web browser on a Windows machine. Try writing a WDM that is compatible with everything in the world while still not locking up the machine and wiping your HD. Another thing...Since all of the windows people are such F...... idiots why do I make so much money supporting windows technology. (remember i'm an idiot too) Hmmm... And just one more thing. Not everyone in the world wants to live , eat , breath code. Unfortunatly I do. Windows is good for those people who don't care about the 12 node Beowulf in my personal lab or what it can do. If someone gave me a 500 mhz machine I'd be happy. Just give me one and watch me smile as I add my 13 node. (gee I might even try to see if I could get Windows to work as the OS on the 13th (I have no idea how I'd do it but why not))
Gee I wonder how many prblems have been had with Linux? Can anyone tell me. It seems that the way people here slash MS, Linux must be the closet thing to Nirvana a computer ever gets. I wonder how many support calls would be made if 350,000 people recieved a Linux box. Just Think!,thats 350,000 more people that can be converted to Linux. Oh my god then it would be worth Money's attention to try to take over. hmmmm....
SIR, YES, SIR there are actually a lot of Marine geeks out here. Dumb Marines don't last long. The guy writing the the funny post at the beginning of this thread had it wrong. Marines protect the freedom of the citizens of the USA to choose what they want, do, have and of course be. (even if you want to be a pig headed neo-nazi ba****) I for one am proud of the fact that I once served to protect/.'s right to open source and free speech (etc.) but I also don't always agree with open source community. Contrary to popular belief the services are not out there to keep the USA highly moral (by whoever'e definition) so go hackers and crackers and have fun.... Just don't exspect me to lift a hand to defend you when your neighbor cuts your phone line or neck (which ever one he gets to first).
Did some rough numbers. In 100 years you will have computers that are 7,386,976,294,838,206,464 more powerful than they are today. If you have a 733mhz machine with a 20 ghd today and it takes you 5 years to do one cool calculation on it. (I do this all of the time, don't you?;) ) Then in the year 2100 you will have a 54085853624116405338.112 ghz cpu and 27739525896764129.28 terrabyte hd and it will take you.0000000000021 seconds to complete the calculation. I do not believe that the hackers of the 2100 will have the least bit of a problem figuring out what the hell we were doing in the year 2000.
In my opinion: If you spent four years (not 8 semesters or whatever) studying the skill you wanted, you would probably be extremely good because you would not be using your time to learn "dead languages" (I know its a sterotype but it helps make my point). Becoming very focused on a subject lets you become a extremely good at it and very employable. There are four basic levels of skill 1.unconscious incompentence 2. conscious incompentence 3. conscious competence 4. unconscious competence (or Guru). When you spread your focus over so many subjects it tough to get to level four. Unfortunately our schools do this (I doubt anyone way back at the start of colleges thought they would end up as they are now). But they do keep us from being narrow minded fools buried into our own little niche. I do think they provide a long course (even though its very weak)in analytical thinking. But they also are a statis symbols, looks good on paper. Like this silly MCSD certification I am required to get (because I don't have a degree in CS) so I can do NT Kernel stuff. It will have no real effect on my job performance (it will look pretty in my file though). Colleges have there place but when it comes down to the wire it will be skill that takes the day. If you have any foresight, pick your focus now so that you can get out of college and take my job (I'll be bored by then and I will need to move on). You also need to be carefull not to become to narrow focused and loose your adaptability to new things or you will know what its like to be a dinosaur. Last and certainly the most important note on this is: Don't be upset not even irritated that someone else didn't provide you with what you want, just be prepared to do it yourself in a manner that meets your needs. Remember: Life is nothing more than a game, its just that the consequences for loosing are a b....
You can't know how happy I am that it is difficult to find NT Kernel geeks. I just made the big jump into that Microsoft quagmire. I quit my job 23 days ago because I was offered an amazingly good job if I could demonstrate skill in this area. I am currently spending my time preparing to take this job(either I'm dedicated or insane). It would be really cool if someone would offer me a amazingly cool job working with Linux....maybe setting up a 4000 node B........(I can still dream...

The number to call to turn someone in is: 1-800-527-1428
The number to their public relations dep is: 1-800-527-1428
The web site is WaveAmerica.com
I ask the Public relations woman this question: How do you prevent abuse.
Her Answer: We have trained people to ask qestion on the phone to the caller. (In other words they know what they are doing)( I don't believe them)
What will they do with the information they collect: send a report to the contact person at the school or organization in question.
How long will they keep the record?:
Her answer: We are not in the data collection business we just give the information to the school.

I just wouldn't use there machine for anything I wanted to keep private or take the machine if I had to stay there one day longer than I wanted to.
