Wah, wah wah. The younger generation is going to hell; the sky is falling; if only those kids were as smart as, good-looking as, (insert your own description) we were/are. I've heard same complaints everywhere - so boring. Yes, there are many ignorant, annoying, lazy people in every profession. In fact, I remember some I worked with in the 1970s and earlier, and some of them were OLD and had advanced degrees and positions. And I'm sick of all the "critical thinking" talk, since no one can define what that means.
I'm 76, so, of course, I'm outstanding at everything!
Guess this explains the conservative / libertarian tone of so many slashdot posts & replies. Voting for tax cuts for rich and food stamp cuts for poor is OK, because they're planning on joining the rich! Incredible! How about expanding your world view outside the edges of your screen.
Finally! The original item and scads of accompanying replies vindicates my belief that much of what appears on the web (not just in slashdot) is based on ignorance.

Fact is, US crime rates are falling! Try watching less TV - local news is the worst - and take a look at the actual world.
Boring book, boring movie. Harry Potter better in both media.
