    To wit, they became mathematicians, and mathematical observations became a substitute for experimental proof (witness some of the quotes we've seen offered in this overall discussion: "it's too elegant to be completely wrong").

    here is another slashdot story involving Mr. Berger. the story is 3.5 years old. the topic was speech recognition using "dynapic synapses" in spiking neural networks.

    i haven't found out yet whether the brain prosthesis announced ~today uses the same dynamic synapse concept. i would guess that the answer is "yes, it does" (based on some of his papers i've read, and based on how long this prosthesis thing has allegedly been in the making). can anyone confirm? today's article doesn't seem to have many details about the architecture of the actual neural network.

    i hope you're joking... do you know how absolutely huge a banner would have to be to be visible (much less legible) from 30,000 feet (5+ miles)?

    remember, this is a very low-power aircraft, too. this design is basically the aeronautical equivalent of a solar-powered bicycle. long endurance w/ no frills, & that includes any sort of excess power.

    just be prepared for the DTIAA (Dead Tree Industry Association of America) to come after you for violation of the DMCA. it's circumvention of the "ink in fibrous media" encryption scheme, don't you know.

    i've been watching this Helios story for a couple of months now. the company that designed & built Helios (w/ NASA) is AeroVironment, founded by Paul McCready (of Gossamer Albatross fame). there are some pretty cool commercial applications intended for this program.
