LOL...First of all, there hasn't even been an announcement. Of course, Dell already has announced (yes, a real announcement, for those of you who don't know what they are) that they'll gladly preload your computer with Windows 2000 beta 3 on it when it comes out. LOL, that's right, at Dell a freakin' BETA wins out over the supposedly stable Linux 2.2 kernel that everyone's (snicker) been waiting for. Just goes to show that they really don't give a shit about Linux, and no amount of trumpeting about announcements that don't even exist can change that. Why? 'Cause Dell knows what the market wants.

Heh, the excuses so far have been hilarious! Man, the truth must hurt pretty bad to see some of you guys trying so hard to spin this into a positive. I especially loved the one about "If you build a great server platform, the desktop apps will follow." Where's he been living the past 20 years, Bizarro World? Good work, boys!

Nah, I didn't forget, I just never knew about the GST refunds for foreigners. If I were to call up a Canadian business and mail-order something (I'm in the US), would they add tax to my price? That's the nice thing about ordering things off the net, at least in the US -- no sales tax. And no, I certainly don't think it'll remain that way, 'cause greedy little socialist lawmakers are gonna start screaming for their share soon enough. *sigh*
If you drove to Canada, wouldn't you have to pay the 7% Goods/Services Tax, plus the 8% Provincial Sales Tax? That would add $25.50 to the cost, although UPS or FedEx could 2-day something like that for under $20. Or is Canada anal about making mail-order vendors charge sales tax? No flame, it's less than a 10 buck difference, just curious since I mail-order a lot of stuff but have never ordered anything from Canada before.
Let's say one company's department buys 1 NT Server and 10 NT Workstations. Another department goes Linux and buys 11 RedHat Linux 5.2 boxes. Now even though they might use only one of them in the "traditional server" role, using the rest as user workstations, all of the Linux boxes will be counted as Server OS purchases. This would distort that Server OS sales statistic, which has gotta be pretty hard to figure out for Linux anyway. I'm curious what their absolute numbers for Linux were, instead of just their listing of "percentage growth." If I just overlooked it in the article, or if anyone has access to IDC's study, fill me in on the details. Other random notes:
Surprised to see only 4 percent growth for Unix, despite Linux not being included in this number.
Surprised that SCO UnixWare showed "strong growth."
Surprised that NetWare showed gains as high as 13.6%, despite the upgrade.
I know OS/2 is dead and all, but a decline of 41% is pretty staggering.
The real question is: Why would any Windows users want to use the Gimp when they can use Photoshop 5, which makes the Gimp look like a bad joke? I guess it's nice that Windows users actually have that choice, though.
Now they use their new nanometer-sized arms on their nanometer-sized selves while they're perusing Slashdot and #netsex, and still be able to keep two hands on the keyboard. Just a thought.:)
Well, depends which Clinton/China thing to which he's referring. They're kinda intermeshed, but involved two separate things:
The transfer of sensitive satellite encryption data to China. Loral helped China's satellite launch program, which simultaneously helped their missile program, even though China is thought to be exporting missile and nuclear technology to countries like Iran and Pakistan. Their actions would have been in violation of the Foreign Relations Authorization Act, except for the fact that Bill Clinton signed a waiver allowing Loral to do go ahead. By the way, Bernard Schwartz, Loral's CEO just happened to be Bill Clinton's biggest donor at the time. You can read the details in a legal brief produced for a class action lawsuit brought by Judicial Watch on behalf of Loral shareholders at www.judicialwatch.org/Loral.html
All that Chinese money which ended up in the Democratic National Committe's pockets before the 1996 elections. You've probably heard of some of the players here: John Huang, Jonny Chung, Charlie Trie, a Ms. Liu (forgot her first name), et al. This resulted in high placement for some of these people and their associates at the Clinton Commerce Department, which accordingly gave China some sweetheart treatment. Classified satellite documents were taken from the Department by Chinese spies, and the investigation is ongoing. This stuff has been mentioned in a lot of different places, but for something which ties the parts together (those which are known so far), you should check out www.judicialwatch.org/interim.htm and see Part III: Commercegate/Chinagate.
You might notice that both of my links point to the Judicial Watch web site. Well, you can thank Janet Reno for that, since she has been showing some major reluctance toward having the Justice Department investigate this. So much so that many of the Chinese players have fled the country. Instead, Judicial Watch (a non-profit organization which is definitely no friend of Clinton and his administration) and The New York Times have been about the only players on the forefront of making sure that the public finally learns what really happened.
Don't even try to say the defensive, childish behavior exhibited by so many Mac users, and exemplified by David Every, is similar to the behavior of Windows users. There's a reason why Mac users have gotten the stereotype that they have, and for a great many of them, it's very valid. The Mac is way healthier than OS/2 or Amiga, yet you don't see the wholesale whining from those two groups that you see from Mac advocates. BeOS is still an underdog to the Mac, and you generally don't see it from their userbase, either. Just talk to a tech writer sometime about the immaturity of Mac users whenever anything but glowing praise is written about an Apple product -- it really is pathetic.
For a great example of what I'm talking about, I recommend that everyone check out comp.sys.mac.advocacy sometime. Some of the Mac defenders there surpass even the great David "I never met a fact I couldn't twist" Every.
Dude, what the Hell are you smoking? Every is more fanatical than Steve Fucking Jobs himself. Try reading some of his other articles sometime. They're all pretty much like this one. There probably isn't a writer around who distorts the facts as much as him.

Question: How does the net worth of the previous Anonymous Coward compare to the net worth of anybody at Microsoft?
Clueless, indeed.
