Well if it isnt immigrants, illegal or legal, you still would not have a blue collar summer job. I havent seen any student in college or high school hold a summer job since the 80's.

Where will you be when you graduate the same place many of us were in the early to mid ninties, paying your dues in a crap job waiting for the sprinkle of promotion or planning the next tech boom.

Depends on where you live. If you happen to live in California not having a car will force you into a life of holding paper signs asking for free money. Different places have different necessities.

  3. depends on holiday on Who Works During the Holidays? · · Score: 1

I am assuming the premise of the article is who works on Christmas. Well honestly I prefer not to, and will actually kick and scream if asked to. But when it comes to other holidays I dont mind such as New Years Day, Thanksgiving, or any other legal holiday. Christmas and the 4th of July was and is still my favorite days off during the year, all the others dont matter to me that much.

  4. Lazy Teachers on Can University Students GPL Their Submitted Works? · · Score: 2

I had a marketing course back some years ago and remember an incident where the instructor asked the class to come up with a marketing presentation for some aircraft company and then follow through for mock up purposes. As it turns out this instructor had also taken a project for an aircraft company. It was soon revealed by another student, graduate student with professional ties and contacts, that the instructor was using the presentations and student marketing efforts for his personal financial gain. Whether this is legal or ethical I dont know, but it sounds like students these days are more up to date than instructors and this little clause allows instructors to take several students work, make it into something for the benefit of themselves or the institution.

  6. Full Circle on Why 2002 Will Be Better Than 2001 · · Score: 1

I still think everything will eventually be full circle. Back in the day banks and most large local facilities and companies ran those dumb terminals with the green (amber) screens, all powered by some mainframe. Today everything is compacted and we have internet. The only thing that will have been gained is color screens, internet, and the mainframe will be replaced by Linux or some MS product. Everything will be leased and things will run solid like they have in the past, then eventually companies will innovate slowly to maintain stability. Then when the time is right a little company will come along and say here is a new OS improved and more modular (some gimmick) than what you are used to and the whole cycle will run again.

  7. What about Covad on Northpoint Points South · · Score: 1

Yes Northpoint is gone, and many people are screwed. Many companies I know are scrambling. But what about Covad. If you look at their stock they are not doing too well these days. And whats to say that aging accounts recievables are not hurting Covad? Seems the telcos may win again, as much as I hate them.

  9. Re:They're counting on the laziness factor on Why Are Software Rebates Being Rejected? · · Score: 2

This is exactly it. I worked for a Marketing firm for a brief time and one of the best methods of sales was to offer a rebate or some sweepstakes type thing, explains the content behind a lot of websites. The percentage, as the firm said, was that only 3% of consumers redeem their rebate coupons. And if it is a somewhat hassle most people forget about it. Although, by the law if one follows all the rules, which cannot be outrageous, a rebate or prize is to be awarded. Most likely, I am speculating, some companies are making it harder to redeem rebates with those letters of disqualification, hoping people will give up. But with a person following up with a phone call or letter they have to pony up the dough since legally they will be in the wrong if they dont. Just my thoughts.

I believe the owner of big M is behind all of this. Since the judge made his announcment about 2 weeks ago the market has been making a downward spiral. I believes that top M$ owners are flexing their muscle a little by pulling just a few of their investments resulting in this drop, which either cause a chain reaction or they have soooo much money that a little shift in their money can cause this. Either way the desired effect is occurring. Judge, I cant remember his name, is considering not making punishement as harsh as originally intended.

  11. Re:Intuitive Means Windows on User Feedback and Open Source Development · · Score: 1

Well I dont know how intuitive Windows is. But in my experience I have worked with people that use Windows, MacOS, and Linux in their daily lives and I got to say for a regular end user MacOS wins. Whereas with someone that knows a thing or two Linux wins. Windows is the go between, GUI enough for most but tweakable enough for regular users to trash the OS daily. My opinion something that offers Mac type GUI (protection for tweaking critical components) and switchable to something console or command related (total tweakability) would work. It would allow both camps to be happy.
