  1. Degree vs. No Degree on Do Geeks Need College? · · Score: 1

I think a degree is of value. Not so much for obtaining knowledge in the IS field (although you will usually get some good broad information of IS so you can mingle with others without sounding too stupid) but it is of more value for learning other skills.

Skills such as working with others under stress (a group project for example), leadership, and communication. I think without a college degree it is more difficult to obtain these skills.

I have a degree in Business (Information Systems), although I work as a programmer. The only technical skills I learned in college were database releated. However, because I learned how to work with people and communicate, I have a decent job with plenty of upward mobility. Without such a degree I would not have the opportunity I'm in right now- our company and many like it don't hire anyone unless they have at least a 4 year degree, and usually at least 1-3 years of experience.

I say go to college if you have the choice. Sure, you may have more $$'s hanging around in the short term, but more than likely you're going to fritter it away anyhow. Plus you'll be missing out on a great learning (about life) experience.

  2. Cute computers on Dell is Building iMac Lookalikes · · Score: 1

iMac's are toys... and now Dell wants to make toys. It's sad when the market doesn't understand that "cuteness" doesn't really affect anything... that is, except stock price.

I suppose PC's could use a face lift though. I think the whole cuteness thing is part of the "paradigm shift" to non-geeks using computers.

What will they come up with next... a PC shaped like a penguin?

  3. RedHat Should Go Public on Dell Buys Equity in Red Hat · · Score: 1

One problem.. if RedHat goes public, guess who will buy the most stock and have control?

  4. Go Dell! on Dell Buys Equity in Red Hat · · Score: 1

I'm glad to hear Dell supporting Linux, even if it is Redhat. I've got an inspiron 3200 laptop running slakware very nicely, even with X. I haven't been disappointed, and after hearing about their support of linux my next system will not only be a dell but will come preloaded with it!

  5. Enough is enough.. on Slashdot:Mark 2 · · Score: 1

    Ok, enough of the jokes.

Lets get something worth reading, eh? I must admit, the first 5 or so were funny (I really liked the one about the mouse by COMPAQ), but now it's getting a little old.

Of course, even if there actually was some real news, no one would believe it. That's the problem with overdoing it on April fools day.

  6. Great article. on Linux Advocates Riot on MS Front Steps · · Score: 1

    HAHAHA!

This article is an excellent piece of work!

I especially like the part about the radio at the end. Toilet paper square... never thought about that. I suppose it could work...

    Nice pictures, too.

  7. Linux and the masses on Clueless Users Are Bad For Debian · · Score: 1

The more you taint the linux pool with the blood of the masses, the worse things are going to be, at least with some distros. Just look at some of the more popular ones. "We want it more user-friendly". Who ever said linux was supposed to be user friendly? User friendly almost always means that you lose functionality and power, and get something bloated. You might maintain that power and functionality, but automatically installing anything means that you don't know your system (at least not right off the bat).

*nix is built on gluing commands together- A GUI is not. That is part of the beauty of *nix Sure, you don't have millions and millions of people using it like you do windows, but so what?

This merge toward the masses wanting to use linux is similar to the trend of script kiddies vs. hackers. You can't just "get the power" without learning first. There shouldn't be shortcuts.

What is the next geek technology? Is Linux going the way of Microsoft? "Easier and more fun". Personally that is one slogan I don't want to associate linux with. I for one will always prefer the command line. I want to SEE what I'm doing, I don't trust the GUI (even setting up and configuring X requires CLI usage).

Using linux should be like building a house. You lay the foundation (the OS, daemons) and add the applications you need. It's powerful, efficient, clean, and effective.. That's why I've always liked linux. Any efforts that detract those appeals I don't want anything to do with.

  8. Mind drive on Type with your Mind · · Score: 1
This reminds me of another technology, called Mind Drive. You stick your finger in a gadget and it measures your brain waves, and responds accordingly. If you think "up" it goes "up". They actually have a bunch of games that they've been testing it on. I personally tried it out, and it worked but was somewhat inconsistent (it takes practice).

    Check it out for yourself.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a port for linux yet..
