Why do you look at art? Because its cool looking. Gibson's words and phrases are cool sounding, and therefore enjoyable to read; provided you have a large enough vocabulary to understand it. It's also the story that flows through the books. The end of ATP was nothing short of beautiful.

Katz on the other hand couldn't pull a cool word/phrase out of his ass if he tried. And he tries a lot

  17. Re:Linux not oo? on Preinstalled Hurd Now Available · · Score: 4

How much would it take to make Linux's kernel object oriented?

Well, It would take as much work as making an entire new kernel. And, if you did it, it wouldn't be Linux anymore. I suppose you could call It Linux, and it could certainly be able to do all the same things as Linux. Maybe you could call it ObjectLinux or something like that. (Of course given the stupid names that the Open Source community sometimes comes up with, I wouldn't be surprised if they called it ooplix ;)

Anyway, OO doesn't make programs faster, or give better performance, what it does, is make things easier to program, and a lot easier to update and maintain. This would probably be a good thing for an open source project, and a clear, well designed object hierarchy would make it much easier for people to start hacking around.

On the other hand, Linux has no real lack of development support, and Kernel hacking isn't really something that the timed are going to be diving into anyway. Anything that can be done in OO can be done in a non-objective language (as long as its Turing-complete :). And I don't think a kernel is really an aria that needs to be OO (other things like the GUI, etc should probably be done that way). They still use assembly in parts of the kernel.

They gave an example of email, because it would have been very cheap (whereas watching streaming video would have cost you a fortune...)

Anyway, just because one country has problems, doesn't mean that they exclusively have to worry about nothing else. "...overpopulation, poverty and the usual like disease, famine and war...". Other then overpopulation, the US is facing all of those issues as well (and I would take issue with the idea that India is overpopulated. Just because there are 'a lot' of people doesn't mean that there are too many, the world isn't anywhere near being overpopulated yet).

And think about it, having an educated populous is the first step toward having a happy, productive populous. Additionally, there are a lot of middle class people in India, middle class people who speak English for that matter. Just like Americans. Why should they not be allowed to have a decent telecom system just because other people in the country have problems? Should Americans be striped of there cable modems because of inner city Crystal Meth use?
