Easy. Limit the length of copyright to something more reasonable, say the framer's original 14 years (actually, In order to keep up with the times, I think it should be less than that - the pace of innovation has increased, so the rate at which IP enters the public domain should increase as well). After that time the IP enters into the public domain.
Problem who owns IP in this country? Disny/ABC, Time-warner, etc. Could you imagen these people no using there finacial mussel to force continuation of their copyrights? More than 1/2 the movie I watch are are morth then 14 years old, same with music. I suspect that for most poeple most of their media consumtion that they pay for is older stuff, this big revene generating source would go away, therefore it will never pass.
Saying, "microsoft broke anti-trust law, so it's a free for all" is the same thing as saying "he got busted for smoking a joint, let's seize his house." Or almost the same, because the second actually happens. If you don't like big companies, don't do business with them.
Well, if victimless crime (e.g. Felony drug possession) is grounds for, lost of franchise (in most states conviction of a felony mean you can't vote ), seizing of property, and jail time, then shouldn't a major crime that hurts many millions of people be treated
MORE harshly? Like say the death penalty? Personally I think that destruction of Microsoft, via the forbidding for them to sell software ever again and the dispersement of assets would be a better remedy. But then I'm MS-free so I don't have a vested interest in keeping them around like the government, the legal system, major corporation etc.. The current decision will not have any effect. Both companies will inherit strong monopolies and lots of business clout to maintain and enforce them, business as usually and software will continue to suck, and we will have to wait another 10+ years before another rounds of ineffective law suits. Welcome to more of the same.
I personal think that this is example of the problem of the current copyright system.
It is too long 150 (75+75) at the turn of the 20th century it was better (14+14).
You don't have to make your product available. If we are granting someone exculsize right to product something they should have to produce it or lose those rights.
I'd rather see (7+7+7+7) and to renew you must demonstright that you are still making the product available to the public otherwise you lose your copyright. The major problem here is what available means, one could always put some high price on the product you don't realy want to produce. I have no idea how to define this.
Heck even 7(+7)^25 sould be better from a cultural standpoint IMHO , with 150+ years of copywrong.
I think that we should Boycott all the companies that sent Samuel Stoddarda letter, for starters.
Perhaps we should start a series of class action suites against such companies as well. There are like some Shi^H^H^H lawyer that would take this on spec. Time to turn the system against its self. I Know I have suffered deep emotional stress because the Dialectizer have been limited multiply that by say 50 kpeople and that has to be worth enough to be someone. To check it out.
Why not instead tell them to run something like junkbusters that'll actually let them control what cookies they want instead of just blindly and across-the-board killing them all?
Why not just use and edit the cokies file? For netscape it is dirt simple. Then `chmod 400 cookies`. Of course the later only works on real operating systems, but if you use junk it is your own problem.
Not to say that UN*X is the only OS but any usefull OS these days should have the the concept of a user, per user prefernces and file permisions. I just don't the read only permisions for any other OS.
Speaking as a consumer, CD audio quality is better than any consumer grade analog option.
There are two analog option that are superior to CD. Records (LPs), and VHS tape, both have full 20-20 frequency response and don't have digital media problems. The reason why CD are more popular is that they are way easier to operator correctly then LP, just pop in not need to clean before every use, and VHS is an expensive media to manufacture. CDs are less then $1 in volume, don't know about VHS, but Cassette tapes are about twice that, I'll assume that VHS is about 3 times, as a wild guess. I have an uncle who work in the recoding manufacture industry in the 80s even after getting new facility to manufacture CD, they where less then $1 CDN to produce and much better production quality. Tape production had serious QA problems then at his factory. Given that CDs where new then and cassettes established I doubt that it has changed much recently.
This is different from Beowulf cluster in that you have two networks going one low-latency/low-bandwidth and one high-latency/high-bandwidth. This is what Avalon did, though with an out of the box Parallel port network, rather than a parallel port network optimized for message passing parallel processing.
Depending on what you need the cluster for you should adapt network at your clustering technology.
I don't profess to know a great deal about Fission or Fusion, but every time someone says "limitless supply of energy" I get skeptical.
Wasn't Nuclear energy supposed to be that? Until we realized there was no place to put the radioactive waste generated.
Actually the reason we have radioactive waste was because the government(s) wanted a plentiful source of weapons grade material. If we had designed clean reactors in chain the amount of radio active waste would be much smaller. Though this would still only be a stop gap measure maybe 300-1000 years. Likely we will have to use more non-fossil fuel sources before we have fusion, actually the more the better likely at this point. (Global warming, need lubricants, etc.)
For the Benchmark: LU factorization, (solving systems of linear equations), that what benchmark is on is.
What they are actually used for, depends on the machine. The ASCII machines are use for simulating nuclear explosions. I suspect a lot of the other are used for simulating things too. One can check the webpages for many of them now and even find out how to get accounts.:-)
ASCII Red is 2 years old and the Blue machines are 1 year old. Then again these machines are expensive to build and they are still programing them. Hense why they are a bit faster than last year.
The real action is lower down Avalon was top 100 now is down to 265. The top cluster goes to cplant take the award for top cluster now.
Alas, parsing a language is very difficult, bordering on the Turning test for most languages. Since almost every language (national and planned) is ambiguous. (e.g. "beautiful little girls school" or "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.") Plus for most national languages (eg. English, and French) we don't know all the rules of grammar. 6000+ for English with maybe 6000 more unknowen.
It is not likely that we will get good automatic translators until we have machine that a pass the Turning test with ease.
The UN here also reinventing the wheel her, there are many candidates for their purposes.
Esperanto has a simple grammer and is easy to learn, since it was intended as a Internation Language. Esperanto is ambiguous, but people can handle ambiguity most of the time.
For well defind nonamgigous languags there are a few Loglan and its desendant Lojban are two, unfortunatly Loglan was not designed to be easy to learn. Actuualy since it was to test the Whorf hypothesis the opposite is closer to being true.
The bottom line is that no planned human language has truely outlived its creator other than Espranto. Creating a planned internation language is a hard task and not like one to be carried out by commitee.
I think that RMS had a better idea on what to do with a guilty MS. Force the opening of MS sources and compliance with published standards. I think that this in the long run this will be better for society then a bunch of Picosofts running around with virtual monopolies in their fields.
except for one-time pads, encryption methods today cannot be "proven" in a rigid scientific manner, which means that you can never trust them 100%. There have been a number of conspiracy theories over the years about NSA. For example DES, was initially developed by IBM. NSA suggested a change to S-box which supposedly made the algorithm more secure. I believe IBM never commented as to why they accepted this change, but many people feared it added a backdoor. Through the years many symmetrical algorithms have come and gone and DES was one of the few that held it's ground against newer crypto-analysis.
Depends on your definition provably. Since transfering a one time pab is as hard as the orginal message this is not a very interesting method. A more reaonable soultion is the time X money cost to break, eg. $ 6M and two years, if this is good enough for the given secret then this is a good system for that secrect. This is sort of an insureance policy way to look at cryptography. There is a new class of public key systems which are secure provided P!=NP. Meaning if you could break this system then P=NP. This is as hard as a public key system can get since you can aways guess someone key and try and decript it.
Yes but what about those teachers that encoureage, enable and create, peer abuse. I recall one class in 6th grade where this was _class_ for 10 minutes (with encouragement to be creative and complete). But of course I had equal time, to reply after. Not that I could come up with much.
I Noted that it is not a complete ASCII keyboard.
It is missing ~ ` | \ [ ] { }. At least one ~

of course I'm not say the system proposed is pratical at the moment.
