    Well, they are programs that perform a specific task. Mind you, a task that the majority of us loathe, but anyway. That would in a way qualify as applications...
    The point of my post was however not to count applications, but rather to be a little bit witty. 40000 or so programs that very specifically depend on Windows.

    The antivirus software on my office PC protects against about 40000 viri...

    On my office Solaris box there is no antivirus S/W nor on my Linux box at home :-)

    The patents others are supposedly infringing are that Rambus were part of the working group that came up with (DDR) SDRAM. While participating they also happened to patent most of the core technology...
    Now that their RDRAM technology is failing market interest, due to high cost and flaky functionality, they sue SDRAM manufacturers to bring SDRAM prices up to RDRAM levels.

    I belive that the operating systems on IBM 7090 as well as IBM 1800 series machines predated the OS/360 which cam as late as mid 1960's

    Since the P4 has a pipeline that is twice as long as the P3 the actual performance boost will be MUCH lower than you may think. Every time the compiler guessed wrong on the runtime data you just wased 20 CPU cycles...

    I would guess that it would be on par with a just-over-1GHz Athlon. After all, to be on the safe side they did compare with an 800 MHz P3...

    First of all,RedHats Piranha is a separate package.
    Secondly, this is not really a software deficiency. It is a user (admin) knowledge risk. The effect of sloppy user on M$ is far worse, but you should as a webadmin know at least basics of security.
    Most importantly this is a media spin issue mainly controlled by the Evil Empire (tm). Everything remotely bad about Linux is inflated beyond proportion. Anything bad about M$ is silenced if possible or at least spun to look trivial.

    We need to get good Spin Doctors working for OSS...

    It's also interest that a full 7% of the domains refused to respond. I'm not an expert here, does anybody know why that would be so high?

    I am actually bothered that only 7% have really tight Firewalls.

    Why are you interested in stats on the *.us domains? Wouldn't .com, .net, .org be more interesting?

    No not really. There is no saying where a site is located based on the TLD. A .us or .ca may indicate that it is located in the US or in Canada. The .com, .net etc TLD's are now truly global. I work for a Canadian company with a .com address, read Swedish newspapers with .com addresses.

    The internet is truly global and every attempt at pinning down physical location based on simple TLD filters is bound to fail.

    I'm afraid that, since it's not running on WinSlop, it must be based on the Honor System.
    There are areas where the Evil Empire are way ahead of Linux. I do not think that we will ever be able to catch up with the advanced "features" of Outlook ;-)

    That assumes that you post through Deja. If you post via any other means that is not true.

    Let's say I post something about word processing on Usenet. Deja then posts it on deja.com altered to contain a link to an ad for Micro$haft Word with my name still on. The ad is not clearly Deja's work as far as I can see. In effect I, a selfconfessed M$-hater, am endorsing the greatness of Micro$haft Word.

    The poster owns copyright with the implicit permission to redisplay unaltered or quoted in whole or part in a reply on Usenet.

    I post a message about wordprocessing. Deja adds a link to an ad for Micro$lop Word. Suddenly my post, under my name is advertising (read recommending) products from Bugware Inc. Since I am a rather vocal Micro$haft hater I would think I can sue Deja for copyright infringement and defamation of character :-)
    If they did not include my name if might be legal though...

    If they did not attribute it to the original author it might be legal based on the fact that the contents was posted to a public forum. Just might.

    The problem here is not the advertisement. The problem is that Deja is insering the ad in the harvested post and republishing it under the original posters name. That is very illegal and even more immoral.
    If they did the same thing without the original authors name it might be lega but still be immoral.
    Now, IANAL but if any usenet poster challenged Deja in court I am rather certain that Deja would have to stop this practise right away.

    My son has learned a lot on the computer and he's only 3
    I beleive that if the computer use is limited the natural curiosity of kids combined with the help from good programs will help them learn. Too much time spent will likely take away the benefit though.

    Of course it works and it's faster than it was back then.
    The same applies to my old Corvette, it works and it's faster than it was back then. It is not a modern sportscar though.
