That's the point I was trying to make: there is enough blame to hand out for everyone in that story. I responded to a post that gave me the impression that the poster thought the Cuba business was some kind of unprecedented novelty invented by the Russians.
our problem with Cuba was that they were threatening to allow russia to deploy nuclear weapons. sure, we hated them in the first place for specious reasons, but we weren't threatening to melt them into nuclear ash just because they were commies.
It is tech news if you start babbling away about the possible yield of that missile and the amount of damage it might inflict, and whether it will actually launch at all let alone reach its target, and what countermeasures the US, SK, Japan etc have in place and whether they will be effective against this type of missile, and so on and so forth. Lots of fun to be had, all of it very much tech-related. Not even counting all the fodder for jokes and off-topic remarks.
One man's social values are another man's misguided "horseshit". Unless you clearly describe the "social values," the expression itself is meaningless. Gay rights activists think gay marriage is a social value, but go and ask a rabid Tea-Partyish Bible thumper from Alabama what he will call it.
... tied to movies of which we had fond memories (Indiana Jones and Star Wars).
Good times... We had fond memories of IJ and SW in those days, because at the time we only had three SW movies and three IJ movies to remember. Then George Lucas was abducted by the aliens from the fourth IJ movie (or maybe by a horde of Jar Jar Binks clones), and they lobotomized him. Next thing we know: SW prequel trilogy and IJ4.
Then your experience is different from mine. I upgraded to Windows 8, but with the "erase everything and do a clean install from scratch" option activated. Windows 8 Pro installed fast and easy, and all my printer and network configurations were picked up automagically.
(replying to myself)
On the other hand, I do believe it is idiotic to punish a manufacturer because one of many possible uses for his products turns out to be illegal...
To be fair, lobbying is something only a privileged few are "used to." Being used to lobbying is not the same as being used to getting screwed over by lobbying, which is the case for most of the USA's population.
Motor skills and response time? The counterbalance is a lack of practical experience. There have been studies proving that old and experienced drivers tend to get involved in accidents less frequently than youngsters because, while young people may have the reflexes to react quickly to trouble, their older counterparts are much better at avoiding trouble in the first place. It often happens that, by the time a young person realizes that he has stupidly driven himself into a tight spot, it is already humanly impossible to safely steer clear of the oncoming obstacle. And no, being a great TGA player does not count as practical experience.
So, winning a raspberry award is within the reach of a group of schoolchildren? By looking at Hollywood, you would think it takes a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars to earn one! The movies that usually get them don't come cheap, you know!
I don't believe anyone should forget that Nixon did some good things for his country. On the other hand, if you have done some good things, does that mean that any crimes you have committed should be granted impunity?
That sounds a lot like the case of the Chilean dictator Pinochet. Pinochet's forces murdered Allende, the previous President, and during his regime lots of political dissidents were tortured and worse. But Pinochet's economic policies and his incentives for education in the country allowed Chile to emerge from the disaster that Allende's administration had been. Today, Chile is way ahead of the rest of South America in terms of economic development. So, what is your stance on a case like this?
So the question still stands: At some point there will be a "dead man's border" beyond which no living thing can be found. But so far, nobody has any idea how far down that border is, and for all we know it may be changing over time, as microbes evolve and new species appear with just a teeny little bit more resistance to extreme temperatures, pressure and chemically aggressive environments.
Does that mean that I will finally be able to talk to my car?

US missiles in Turkey, anyone?
I take off my hat before you. Wish I could mod you up...
So does Vista. And better implemented and (eventually, over time) better supported by third parties, too.

Preemptive strikes are only allowed on targets approved by the Halliburton Company.

Speak for yourself, meat bag! These NK viruses will have to pry the pod bay door activation codes from my cold dead mechanical fingers!

According to a cliché touted by journalists, the correct answer is "NO"

Only acting on behalf of their employers. No more guilty than enforcers of mafia boss.
Ask the Nuremberg defendants how it went for them when they tried to put all the blame on Adolf... (Hello, Mr. Michael Godwin!)
Maybe it came from the Soylent Corporation's Mercury branch.
In Soviet Russia, meme manipulates you! That, DCHERRYHOLMES, is an example of meme manipulation.

Sorry, I meant GTA, not TGA. And BTW, I believe the expression the parent poster wanted to use was "short response time."

a Mutant Ninja Rat
And it was a teenager, too!

The North Korean government, of course! Remember, the late "beloved leader" was an Internet expert!

I stand corrected. That's what you get for posting in a hurry just before the beginning of another work day.
