If anything I think we are in a 'gadget bubble' right now, and Apple is king. I've spent much more on pianos, violins and lessons for my kids the last few years than electronics.
I don't think so- MS didn't want to delay windows 8 and include 'windows 8 desktop' so they released it as is... windows 9 will have 'windows 8 desktop' They get to sell the same thing twice.
It sounds like it boils down to this- they don't know who the owner of the phone is, but it has been linked to an illegal use. Does it require a warrant to locate this phone?
Another thing that I thought was odd was using the HDD as the boot disk... why did they even have a SSD in the configuration? If SSD was used for boot the differences in startup and shutdown wouldn't have been as much.
So if the Coast Guard triangulates on the radio of a drug running boat to find it they shouldn't do this either? If you emit radiation you should assume it is public.
The article does not say that explicitly- I don't really know much about cell protocols but there may be a way to do it just by looking at the signals.
If you have a unique flashing blue light on your car and police notice that it shows up at different drug sites in a pattern, are they supposed to ignore it? What is different about the EM radiation from a cellphone other than you not being able to see it?
What do you mean by censorship? If taxpayers want to be reasonably certain that porn isn't available in schools or libraries is blocking porn censorship? Why would a website operator want to get around these restrictions?
You have a good view of how things should happen but that is not how the usually occur, at least from my POV. I am sure there are other successful outlooks that work too this is just my personal experience.
Well for one, I always know what is coming down the pipe so I could get my team and I on the juiciest projects and avoid the loser/death-march projects. I would also get called to do prototypes and demos so upper management became familiar with me, so it was easy to ask for large pay increases.
Exposure to OPS has increased my ability to troubleshoot environment issues.
These cars are not self driving! By law there is a licensed operator at the wheel that is ready to take control at any time. Without stats of how often these operators had to take control from the computer these statistics are meaningless!
That's funny, I have always been curious about what everyone is doing, even operations and sales. I have found this knowledge extremely helpful for both my projects and my career.

They can retire whenever they want if they pay for it.

Maybe they just love their work :-)
Here's a better thought- add phone service to this thing and call it a 'iPhone Maxi'
Readercon is to hackers as donut is to washtub?
I would be surprised if you couldn't add a startup job to click the desktop icon.
I can't take credit for this, it is a chemists trick from when plotters were used with a gas chromatograph and there was no automatic integration.

That's not true- one way is to plot your curve on the paper (a pencil will do), cut it along the line and weigh it.
Wet?
while user-facing software is often well-polished
I think the distinction is that most user facing software doesn't lose 400million due to a bug.
Get out much?
Java apps really benefit to... open office is amazingly quick.
Yeah, like you were going to RTFA anyway ;-)
