    I agree to an extent- it seems ridiculous you can watch a dozen murders on tv but not see a womans breast or a man's ass.

    It does seems though that culturally it is ok for people to fake a murder (shakespear anyone?), but portraying the molestation of children is discussed or portrayed only under very specific circumstances.

    As the quality of CGI grows, people will be able to make artificial movies that are (almost) indistinguishable from real life. Limiting child pornograpy is done for more reasons than just protecting children from exploitation. Fantasy in troubled individuals often leads to acts.

    growth methods for plants that produce higher yields/lower growing space
    new energy technologies (solar, specifically)
    advances in metallurgy *other* than titanium.

    I am tired of this blind admiration for Nasa. The space shuttle was so poorly designed that it has to be completely rebuilt every time it is launched(Read the second Feynman biography if you don't believe me).
    If they had any balls they would of junked that thing and went with single use launch vehicles wich would save the America public a ton of money. Nasa is about politics, not science.

    I am not sure what silating cotton would do to look and feel, but it would be permanent.(you probably scrape the stuff off your windshield). I just get annoyed when people apply words in ways they shouldn't, rendering them meaningless.

    I get up in the morning, pour nano-fat globules on my nano-starch wafers, which I consume thereby filling my body with nano-fuel.
    Or I could say that I ate cereal for breakfast!

    It seems like they are trying to promote something as nano-tech, when it is probably just decades-old chemistry. My guess is that they are treating the fibers with something like octadecyl trichloro silane, which will attach themselves to the hydroxyl group on the cotton fiber. This would make the fiber water and stain resistant. This technology is very common, and has been used to make things like glass bead-resistant.
    Of course I could be wrong, but none of the articles have a technical explanation.

    Another absurd notion is that of 'cheap energy'.
    And with limitless, cheap energy, the development of poorer nations wouldn't be one of them, either.
    Only 1/3 of your electricity cost is for the fuel, the other 2/3 are for equipment, delivery, and administration.

    People have been buying and sell used books in the real world for a long, long time. If it is considered legal and ethical in meatspace, I fail to see why you would look at the web differently.
    Don't forget, they have been beating us over the head with meatspace anolgies about piracy of video and music, let's not start using a double standard now.

    Please do not confuse Mozilla with the release from Netscape. I have been using .6 for a week, and it has not crashed once. It renders quickly, and generally kicks ass. This installer is only 6mb! The only thing that doesn't seem to work well is some javascript- Some of the more advanced menuing does not seem to work right...
    Go Mozilla!!!

    Please enlighten me: which of the contemporary mukansa level swordsmiths use 'modern metallurgical techniques' when creating a sword? The closest thing that comes to mind is the power hammer, which has been around over 100 years.
    I am sure that there is plenty of academic activity around Japanese swordmaking, but I am talking about the smiths that actually make a living doing it.

    By law in Japan, a liceanced swordsmith is only allowed to make 2 swords per month, and they must be made from crude Tomahage that is made the same way it has been made for almost a thousand years.
    By law all machine made world war II swords are supposed to be destroyed, as they are considered to be an embarrassment to the Japanese art.
    You know nothing about Japanese swordmaking.

    And there lies the crux of the problem- the ability to quickly gain weight is an evolutionary advantage in areas where food availability is inconsistent. People who can 'put on the pounds' during harvest season are more likely to make it through a tough winter or drought.

    I remember an interview with Carmack where he said something along the lines of "I think that IP is more important for the artwork included in a game, than the actual code." I think the same idea can apply to mods that uses other people's artwork. Can anyone find a link to this?

    This brings up the obvious question, what would you possibly want to do with a 10GHz processor?
    This is the big question- what will we do with these things?

    being able to speak normally with your computer as you would a secretary sitting next to you and have your computer accurately and quickly take notes from your speech.
    Do you really want to talk to your computer all day? Imagine sitting in an office with 20 or 30 people 'talking' to their computer. I type faster than I can speak!

    Imagine logging onto your computer not via a user name and a password but by sitting in front of your display and having it scan your face to figure out if you are allowed access to the computer.
    Well that is certainly worth billions of dollars in investment. I don't need to type in a password anymore. Wow!

    Personally, I disable all the noises on my computer. How many times can you stand to hear the same noise again and again?
    Somebody in our office has it set up where it says "You have email, Master". Across the room it sounds like "You have email, Bastard".

    All microsoft bashing aside-
    Would MS Word be more more valuable if MS decided to 'Freeze' the feature set of Word? (only changes made would be bug fixes) This would attract much more development and a quicker adoption of Word as a standard. People would also have more incentive to take classes to learn Word.

    Maybe open-source could take the leadership role with this idea.

    Here are the things that I DO know-
    1) We cannot and will never know the exact count in the state of Florida

    2)Your right to vote is not an inalienable right- if you break your leg, and are in the hospital which prevents you from voting, then too bad. If you did not spend the time to positively pick your candidate, and poke the correct holes out, then your vote DOESN'T count.

    3)The argument that Bush would have done it too is unfounded. Greater men in the past have stepped down in similar circumstances.

    4)Breaking one law to maintain another happens all the time. Apparently counting the votes 'exactly' (an impossiblity) is more important than following the deadlines on deciding who won the Florida vote.

    5)'Shit Happens' even when you are electing the president. My God, we are just a small speck in the universe!
