    The company I have worked for developed a bunch of java desktops apps. The comment was often, "glad you didn't use slow java for this...".

    Its funny how slow it is if they know its java. And how fast it is if they think its not. Really they never new... cus it was written properly in the first place...

    As for C/C++ whatever apps. They also take a long time to load and use all the dam ram are unresponsive and usually as buggy as hell. Its not what they are written in. Its what the writers wrote that make them sux.

    You know the biggest resource hog on my machine is firefox....not eclipse. So does that mean C/C++ is a resource hog?

    Vista is a resource hog, MS Office is a resource hog, some games are resource hogs... they are not written in java....

    Perhaps the coding has more to do with performance and resource usage the what the code is written in? Honestly if java is a resource hog you coding wrong or using crap code.

    The reason is even simpler than you propose. They make more money off a move with a R13 or less rating than R16 or whatever, which is why even die hard 4 was a R13 IIRC where the original die hard was an R16... They main goal of the investors is to make money...

    But you know there are plenty of movies that go out of these bounds. You only have to look around. And if all everyone is really after is boobies then why not just rent/go to a porn flick?

    I can think of a lot better uses that pay some patent fee... Put the 5 million per year into developing an unencumbered video codec perhaps...

    Did you get legal advice on that? I did and they lawyers I paid for do not agree.

    Even if you are giving away software, the best they would say is you are probably ok and even if it went to court would *probably* only get an injunction rather than a fine.

    However they said they put no stock on safety from liability if your software is commercial.

    Apparently you have a poor imagination and don't get out much.

    My wife uses stronger taunts in online games. Hell even the bots in Quake use stronger taunts.... I bet even the local sports team cheer leaders use stronger taunts... My grandma uses stronger taunts on Saturday bingo....

    As someone who worked with a diabetes research group, I assure the Cowardon is right. everyone in that group always did one thing. Lost weight. If you are a quite a bit above the BMI the chance of type 2 diabetes goes up massively (like about 40x IIRC).

    H.264 is a standard. It just cost money to implement. A lot of standards are like this, including things like different bus standards on the PC. Many people who write these standards are also the people with the patents. H.264 reeks of this. So many little features that make it harder to implement and don't gain any decent bit rate at all, but are patented...

    Its not just the US. Even in the EU they grant software patents. No one has enforced or tried to enforce them yet. But its not a given you would win a court case based on a "software only" defense.

    Will you pony up the 5Million per year? And if the fees are hiked up next year?

    Oh and what restrictions are there in the contract that you sign? Like say don't distribute this or that "patented" technology as OS software.... Very very un OS and against the GPL 3.

    At the very least there is no redistribution. You would have to download the browser from Mozilla directly. It would be illegal to bundle it in the distribution, even with windows....

    Patents do a lot more harm than just cost money....

    I have 5 different computers that are exclusively mine to use. I have 2 at the office, 2 at home and a laptop. Then there is the cluster etc. In any week I am working on 5-10 different machines.

    This has been the norm for over 10 years and there has never been a need for "clouds". We called them servers back in the day. I still call em servers now.

    the cloud is a marketing term for investors. Look up the Net PC. Its nothing new. Hell what where multiuser mainframes about? The mainframe I worked on was over 1000km away...

    Because that comes with strings attached. And thats 5M per year.

    The biggest string will be no secondary distribution allowed. I would not be able to include FF in my linux distro for example.

    The next biggest string is that they can change the terms anytime they want...

    Apple have patents on H.264. If I buy a license to include H.264 in my browser apple gets some of the money.

    Getting a license for H.264 off MPEG-LA does *not* protect you from liability of other patents that may cover the standard that they don't have (MPEG-LA).

    Apple don't have any fear of patent litigation with theroa. They want everyone using a standard they make money on.

    Wait till later --when the fees go up and even content needs a charge....

    The same argument can be made for h.264. Even the agreement with MPEG-LA states that there is no guarantee that there are not other parts of the spec that may violate other patents not included in their patent portfolio. So there could be submarine patents there too.

    Apple are *not* a neutral 3rd party here. They stand to gain on licenses for H.264 that there competitors would be force to pay since they *have* patents on H.264... They are the patent troll here....They want everyone to think there is a risk. It makes them money.

    No --He even said no-so giant. A lot of the original hydrogen now locked up as water could have been hydrogen from the proto planetary disk. It did not need to be water in the first place. After all most of the sun is just H2. As I said, he/she had a point. Not that all of it is correct as we understand.
