Look at the "Professional" edition of the product and you'll see, "Ability to run multiple windowed 3D renderings", etc. Their main draw is going to be people who can't wait for 3D support from XFree86 and need *real* OpenGL 1.1.1 compliance, not this Mesa 3.0 GL-clone, and also people who will want better support for their expensive workstation graphics cards than what's available elsewhere. :)

I guess this could be done with RPM, but I'm not particularly fond of the RPM package system because it cannot be used on a system that doesn't have the RPM software installed (read: Slackware, Stampede, etc etc -- my favorite distributions because they cut out the bullshit and let me edit settings in sanely organized files!)...

Also, it'd be nice to have a console version of the installation/removal system for those who can't use X for one reason or another.

The installer could include an interface for optinally making the binaries from source, or whatever other steps that are out of the ordinary.
Something like "Setup" would be a script for compiling the interface(s) maybe, like the linux kernel has make menuconfig. :)

I believe Hercules was having difficulties acquiring above average yields of the TNT2 chip for their Dynamite product. Since the TNT2 yields were vastly different on a per-chip basis, they ended up making the chips that could reach higher clock speeds the "Ultra" flavor, etc. A marketing gimmick designed to take attention away from the fact that they were having difficulties in the manufacturing process.

Now don't go ahead and take an anti-nvidia stance here if you make a reply, because 3dfx also shows the same problem in the fact that their V3-3500 product was VERY late to market and including the LCD out raised the price of the board out of the normal person's reach. If 3dfx had just gone for a single high end product like the 3500, they'd be in serious financial trouble right now.

Personally I own a Hercules Dynamite TNT2 Ultra, but the Hercules drivers have been more stable than any other drivers I've used due to the board's extremely high clock and memory speeds. I used to have a very hot case, and I think it may have damage the card.. :( I get lock ups in Q3Test every so often, and in other 3D games. (I'm not sure if the problem is only OpenGL, or what at this point, I havent' had time to track it down)

I hope that Guillemot doesn't drop the ball, and continues releasing drivers for the Hercules TNT series boards now that they're is a new reference driver release available on nvidia's web site.

Open source facilitates code proliferation and feature sharing between different applications. What you allow people to do is to create their own vision of what computing should be like. The boys writing Enlightenment would like their desktops to be as much of a piece of art as the underlying kernel. ;)

Code reusability comes from coding great modularity. Which is why toolkits exist today. Otherwise everyone would have to write their own for each individual application. People *still* have the OPTION to do so, however it is easier for most people who might want to struggle with just getting the core components of the application finished that their themeable interface doesn't take years to finish. The reason why the filemanager looks to use a new set of widgets is largely reusing the widgets created for the new configuration features of Enlightenment (this is all my speculation, I don't actually know any of this stuff for sure since I'm not exactly a developer...:)

WindowMaker's WINGs toolkit has been used to start several different filemanagers, but the most you can do with it is something that ends up looking like WindowMaker. And to people in the Gnome and KDE camps, they'd rather see all their applications LOOK THE SAME, and work relatively similar to the rest of their desktop environments. A seemless experience with minimal re-training time when installing and using a new application for the first time is an admirable goal.

Tightly controlled access to schools in particular (like we do with airports and courtrooms) is a possible step that could be taken. I won't argue with that.

His work isn't wasted feeding the greed of another individual. If you want to make $$$ off something like that, go start from scratch and code a competing product. Although I'd advise coming up with features that make your particular product worth the money people would spend on it.

What 3Com is doing with their drivers is ensuring that no third party vendor will take their drivers and make a commercial version that has "new features" and "enhancements" and end up giving 3Com tech support grief, etc. I believe its the only way if you want to do an open-source release and still prevent that kind of thing...?
