  1. Re:Quick Question Actually. on Comcast Raises Bandwidth in Shot at DSL · · Score: 1

The cables themselves are capable of handling a lot of bandwidth (100MB/s+). The limitations on your internet speed come from two places: First, the head-end, which has a certain amount of bandwidth it can deliver (which includes your internet and TV signals). Second is your cable modem. There are settings in the software which throttle your speeds.

  2. How to stop it..... on What Software Do Cable Installers Place on Your PC? · · Score: 1
Cable ccompanies require a franchise agreement with your city to establish their "Monopoly", so all you have to do is get some people together, submit a petition, and present it to the city. They can work your requirements into the franchise agreement, and if the cable company wants to continue to service your area (lets assume this is a big yes), they will have to comply.

You get to pay the city for the right to get your cable (see the "Franchise Fees" section of your bill), so you can stop it.

  3. Re:the book on Movie Review: 'High Fidelity' · · Score: 1
I don' know...I'm in the mid-twenty-something bracket, and read the book about a year ago (in pretty much one setting I might add..) I was able to relate quite a bit to many of the trials and tribulations the characters were going through....Maybe it's because I have this odd addiction to music, and that retrospectively my obsession with getting, playing, and listening to music gives a "soundtrack" to my life wich bring up piognant memories during casual listening later.

For whatever reason I really enjoyed the book, and have put the movie on my must see list....

  4. ABC is one of the best open notation standards. on Making Music With Linux : Notation And Alphabet Soup · · Score: 1
Unfortunatly I havn't kept up on this thread much, but I thought it important to plug the work of Chris Walshaw on the ABC Project.

While originally created to notate traditional (i.e. Irish, Scottish, Bretton, etc) music using simple ASCII text, the standard now supports some pretty complex notation. In fact there is a version of Beethoven's Symphony No.7, Movement 2 by Steve Allen.

Most of the ABC interpreters out there are GPL'd (including abc2ps, the ABC to Postscript Converter) and there are apps ou there for just about every platform (including a java based interpreter for embedding in you web pages). There are also a couple converters to or from MIDI, and a few apps that get a little fancier (add harmonies, etc). See the ABC Homepage for a complete list of software and music available.

    Anyway I'm done ranting....just wanted to see my favorite notation system get some air time. :}

  5. Risks of running web sites. on Professor Sues teacherreview.com Site Operator · · Score: 1
When a Webmaster puts up a web site which invites public opinion liability is always on conscern. If the Webmaster decides to get involved in moderating what get's posted then they open themselves up to becoming liable for it's content.

This doesn't seem to be the case here. According to the Disclaimer submisions are added directly to the database without any intervention by the people running the site. It's also stated several times that the subject matter is the opinion of the individual and nothing more.

Sites like ebay face the same issues. Once you start filtering some content you suddenly become responcible for all the content.

Personally I prefer the "hands off" approach.

  6. Looks familiar on SCO Talks About Linux · · Score: 1

I find it rather interesting that SCO is throwing out th same FUD as Microsoft....only perhaps with less skill (let's face it MS is the king of FUD). It seems they went after the insecure, no support, no control tactics.....You'd think thy could try to be a bit original.

  7. Re:Promote Open Source Software on Ask Slashdot: What can we do about UCITA? · · Score: 2

I agree that this makes OSS even more attractive, but we have to be realistic here; OSS can't do it all yet....(and I stress yet).

We have to deal with pesky little things like users. How many common everyday end-users would be willing to give up their cushy Windows9x point and click box for a Linux box running X (lets face it many of these people don't like clicking on "Start" and then "Programs" in the Windows world)?

And then there are the apps that just aren't there yet in the OSS world. I would LOVE to find an OSS Accounting app that can compare to comercial products like Solomon, Great Plains, or Oracle Financials (or hell even QuickBooks), in capabilities and usability. These are the apps that are driving small-medium sized companies (which there are a lot of out there) and there just aren't any OSS solutions available.

I'm all for an end to comercial software, and achieving the Software Utopia that we all are working for, but it's a ways off yet.

Personally I plan to draft a few letters to a few offices of a few of the State Officials hanging out around town (I happen to live in the State capitol).....maybe if I convince a few more people to do so something will happen.....(is that Arlo I here?).....

  8. Re:How effective is this supposed to be? on Feature:Zeal, Advocacy, and the Future of Linux · · Score: 1

I havn't sent any emails in defense of Linux....yet. My biggest fear in doing so is that I may get carried away and my once informitive email becomes another flame from another Linux zealot. As I see it this article is another in a collection of filters to run any responces through I may decide to send in the future. Basically I want to do it right.

It seems that the same passion that motivates people to spend countless hours making Linux what it is (and more) causes them to become raving lunatics at the slightest criticism.

I can say the evangelistic process that brought me to Linux was done well. I'm currently working toward that level of advocacy....
