All of the required "embryonic" stem cells can come from the 1000's of 8-cell blastocytes that are destroyed or frozen every day as part of the in-vitro ferilization process.

There is a problem with that. The scientists dont want to limit their research to humans with fertility problems. They also want to be allowed to create their own blastocysts via nuclear transfer to study patients with paticular illnesses.

If any of what I've said doesnt make sense then watch the Science Network's symposium on Stem Cells. Stem Cells: Science, Ethics and Politics at the Crossroads. They explain all the issues and technologies repeatedly and in a way normal folk can understand. I watched the full version but there is a new edit that might be good too.

I recently heard about something called "dedicating" a patent. Apparently this means owning a patent and then declaring it for public use. (google for "dedicated the patent")

I'm not sure this is something you'll actually want to do, given the costs of patenting.

Establishing prior art should be simpler, just send your idea to one of these companies that are required by law to keep records of all their communication (or use a lawyer or whatever the standard way of establishing priority is).

On the other hand just post your idea here and we'll tell you how its not new and it is obvious.
(Both of my most recent 'great' ideas have turned out to be under development by others)

Nevertheless, good luck to you and I hope your idea really is original.

    Eben Moglen says :
We will say to the judge, "Judge, Mr. Defendant has used our copyrighted work, copied it, modified it and distributed it without permission. Please make him stop."

One thing that the defendant can say is, "You're right. I have no license." Defendants do not want to say that, because if they say that they lose. So defendants, when they envision to themselves what they will say in court, realize that what they will say is, "But Judge, I do have a license. It's this here document, the GNU GPL. General Public License," at which point, because I know the license reasonably well, and I'm aware in what respect he is breaking it, I will say, "Well, Judge, he had that license but he violated its terms and under Section 4 of it, when he violated its terms, it stopped working for him."

But notice that in order to survive moment one in a lawsuit over free software, it is the defendant who must wave the GPL. It is his permission, his master key to a lawsuit that lasts longer than a nanosecond.

The easiest way to learn this is to use a "lucky" coin to make simple decisions such as "should I clean the bathroom today ?" you will quickly learn to cheat, even if only subconciously.

Damn, replying to my own post. I've caught up now.

Roy T. Fielding (co-founder, The Apache Software Foundation) may have the authority to grant this extra GPL compatibility to their Apache Licensed code. He does not have authority so say this about third party code that may happen to use this licence.

So in the case of Apache, which I assume is entirely the property of the Apache Foundation at the moment, then there is no problem.
If others however submit to Apache, or distribute themselves, code released under the Apache 2.0 licence (without reassigning copyright the the Apache Foundation) then that code is not covered by a copyright holders promise to be "GPLable".
