Dual core means simply you have TWO processors running.
AFAIK (and I may be wrong, someone please correct) the intel dual core shares one memory bus, where in most true dual CPU systems they don't. There may also be other bus sharing issues...
On the other hand, SMP may be more efficient with both cores on the same chip.
It would be very interesting to benchmark a dual Intel CPU machine against a single CPU dual-core machine running at the same frequency, etc.
While that's true, these dual core chips (especially Intel's lame single-memory bus design) really seem targeted towards the desktop market where the impact is greatest, yet cost differential is realativly small (in relation to the total price of a system including software.)
I'm more interested in what IBM's Cell processor can do. While some problems are definately single threaded by nature, the majority are not. I have a GIS application that could definately benefit from as many processors as I can throw at it (although there comes a point where you need more memory, disk I/O etc. too so you still need to spread them out over a cluster to some degree.)
It's one thing to have bugs that can be exploited, another to have an insecure design that really can't be secured. BK wasn't designed back in the nice old days of the net when everyone was friendly like unix / dos. LM should know better.
And Perens? This is a slugfest that only Gates, Darl, and RMS would love - all for differing reasons. Why does Perens feel compelled to call out Linus over his treatment of Tridgell?
Consider also that Parens has known McVoy since they were both kids. I believe Parens truely believes that Linus / McVoy are treating Tridgell badly, and that Tridgell was only working to advance FOSS and not to be vindictive or harmful. And I believe he's right.
Yep, in fact, I do just that with dvd::rip and Myth TV. It's especially usefor for the evil Disney movies that want to force young children though 10 minutes of ads.
I originally thought about getting a big DVD changer, but Myth with a few big drives works better. Even the wife is happy.
The classic/. whine. Microsoft must be bad, a court said so.
Um, no. We in the industry have been saying for YEARS that MS's business practicies are at the minimum unethical, and probably illegal. A court just backed that up, based on a large amount of evidence - some of which was made public. Feel free to read up on the case to educate yourself.
But if when that court upholdes patents, or the DMCA or anything we don;t liek the courts are obviously too stupid to understand technology situations.
Boy, you really don't get it. The MS monopoly case had NOTHING to do with patents, or the DMCA. There is no "hypocrisy" here. Furthermore, it's not the COURT that passed the DMCA or software patent laws. It's Congress. Sometimes Congress passes good laws, more frequently they don't. Being vocal about the bad laws isn't hypocrisy, it's being democratic.
On the other hand, swish-e has been around for many years, and works quite well as a desktop search engine (although it wasn't intended for that use.) Best on Unix, although works on Windows too.
Yes, yes, all well and good except that MS has been found guilty of using unfair business practices to maintain and extend their monopoly. Lotus Smartsuite and WordPerfect Office are effectivly DEAD due to the bundling issue. IMHO (and I'm not alone) MS should be forced to open the file formats to restore competition in the marketplace. How can wordperfect compete when MS was basically giving away the full office suite for $100 (as a bundle when you buy a PC loaded with Windows)?
The bottom line is that we (consumers, businesses, government) are all harmed when competition is eliminated in the marketplace. MS no longer charges $100 - it's $400 for the pro bundle now (now that the competition is gone) which is just a little less than non-bundled price. Lotus and WordPerfect could not compete with a $100 office suite. They Could compete with a $400 office suite, *if* the market were still competitive.
To me, it's not about the cost of the license. It's about open protocols / file formats. I can only work with MS formats / protocols (for the most part) with MS software. This limits my ability to create custom software that works with those systems / files. It makes it harder to work with other business partners unless they also use MS. I want real XML documents that don't use proprietary extensions and binary containers. I want a single signon system that works with ALL platforms / applications. I can't get that from MS.
how about running MS-Office via CrossOver on a Linux box
Um, I do, BUT you should check out the compatability info on codeweavers web site, and understand what does and does not work. It works well, but not perfect. Sometimes far from perfect.
For Active directory, it would be Novell E-Directory (NDS with a new name.) Faster, more robust, better scalability, cross platform, etc. AD is a bad clone of the old Netware 4 NDS (which was pretty cool 10 years ago. It's come a long way since.)
And in some installations I built, the "servers" were actually regural 1GHz desktops
Ugg. I would never do that. Real server class hardware is much more reliable, is designed for remote management (suck as the ILO feature on HPaq machines,) and mounts in a rack better. Real servers can also be fairly inexpensive if you don't need ultra high-end boxes.
We have actually moved to a blade environment with the only problem being heat. Those suckers use a LOT of power, hence generate a HUGE amount of heat. Very very few data centers have a design that can handle lots of blade servers. So we just spread them out for now until the industry comes up with a workable solution. I would expect anyone doing a large-scale thin-client system would need a fair amount of horsepower, and blades work well as they are so easy and fast to manage / deploy (most of ours run Linux BTW.)
Another advantage of a thin client is that you have everything at any terminal be it in a conference room, another building on the campus (business campus), or even a remote office. No, this is not the same thing as a laptop, as points 1 - 6 don't apply to laptops (especially "reliability".)
We use both Dreamweaver and hand coding. DW is great for prototyping, one-off static sites, and other simple things, where NOTHING beats the power, compactness, and standards compliance of hand-coded xhtml for large / dynamic sites. I have never seen a GUI tool create great HTML. Ever. It may work, but if you ever have to hand-tweak it, it sucks.
Yep. I've been through an audit too. Previous IT manager was horrible about records. Ended up paying huge $$$ in new licenses to get compliant. The license cards / stickers are the only things that count.
Gee thanks. I think I do. Please post proof that I am wrong. Just because your EE program was all theory and nothing practical does not mean that ALL EE programs are that way. There is nothing an electrician does or knows that can't be taught in a 1 year vo-tech program.
Wrong. Ownership has everything to do with it. If you own the property, you're allowed to do the work without being a certified electrician.
WTF? No shit sherlock, that's what this is all about... I'm not talking about what the current (broken and paid for by union lobbyists) law is saying, I am talking about what the law SHOULD be. Ownership has NOTHING TO DO with the quality and correctness of the work, and THAT is indisputable.
As for comparing this with SCO or McDonaldl, well, SCO is a completely different case about contracts which does not involve a government agency, and it's not over yet. As for McDonalds, why didn't the health department get sued? Hmm. They should be looking out for us, and are responsible for regulating safety at restaurants, right? Where is the liability there??? Oh, gee, maybe it IS McDonalds responsibilty for making sure that the coffee isn't served boiling hot, just like it would be MY responsibilty to make sure that I did the work correctly at my parents house - regardless of whether it's inspected or not.
Anyway, the inspector could ALWAYS require homeowners getting permits / inspections to sign off liability due to the fact that an unlicensed electrician performed the work. Imaginary problem solved.
Lets address the real reasons here. Trade protectionism. Transparent as optical glass. Liability arguments are a smokescreen. Back to the FA, I have Never, Ever heard of a case where an ethernet or telephone cable started a fire.
Companies may pay less taxes than people, but they do pay taxes. Again, the burden on the state to "host" a company is negligable in most cases (there are cases where real infrastructure needs to get upgraded such as a new freeway exit, but property taxes generally pay for that. These are not the companies that have a lot of telecommuters however, so the distiction is important and the issue moot.)
As for flat consumption taxes, I like them but the problem is the transition. Think people that retired or are near retirement - they have already payed taxes their entire life on their savings, and now as they SPEND the savings, they would get hit again. This is a well known issue that when investigated in depth shows that moving to a flat tax is not nearly as easy as most imagine.
Of course there are other factors. I still believe bad parenting is the number one factor however. I wouldn't blame all crime on the parents of the criminals - that would be silly. I know many families that don't put ANY limits on gamming however - frequently one of the parents games as well. My own brother has this issue with his son, and it's clear that the child is being damaged. He can't socialze in a normal setting. You have grade-school children staying up until 2am playing games. Sorry, that's just not good for the child.
But as for other situations where the parents work too much to be involved, they can't be directly blamed
Why not? Why have children if you can't or are not willing to properly parent them? Just because you CAN have children does not mean that you SHOULD have children. Sorry, but if you put your career before your children then you need to accept responsibility for how they turn out. I don't know what it is about poor people and kids. Why do poor families have so many children??? The burden on the rest of society is HUGE. My sister-inlaw has 7 kids. Her husband works in concrete, but can't hold a job. She works minimum wage jobs, but can't hold one longer than 4 months (how you end up being ineligable for rehire at burger king is a mystery...) The kids? 2 are pregnant at 14 and 15, and the 12 year old is under state care. As for the rest, it's too early to tell, but the future does not look good.
I personally know way too many bad parents. I see what it does to the kids. I'm going to lay blame where the blame belongs.
That's all fine and good until you realize that it's NY that greatly benefits by having the company based in NY, the company paying taxes and all. Companies get VERY VERY little "state" benefits in reality - usually more of a liability (regulatory and tax issues.)
The solution for this is quite simple really. Open a branch office in the other state. It can be one room in a shared office environment (which is fairly cheap.)
You can also change your state of incorporation to a more business friendly state, or even another country. More and more businesses are already doing this due to the insane US / state tax laws.
Due to the economic downturn, many (most?) states have major budget problems. They are all looking for ways to solve them - usually this means increasing taxes and fees rather than cutting spending. The issue in the FA is just another part of that. Anytime someone looks at cutting spending on something, you have protests by the groups affected, and the legislature backs down. THis kind of problem is going to get worse.
Um, the inspector should make sure that the job is done properly. Ownership has nothing to do with it. As for "your parents can go after the municipality for allowing someone who wasn't qualified to do electrical work on their property" - probably not. That suit would be thrown out on the grounds that my parents KNEW that they were hiring an unlicensed electrician. They may be able to go after ME however.
The way this works in the real world is that people basically say "fuck the law" and do it anyway, and then the work ends up not getting inspected. Which is worse? Having a relative do the work and having it inspected or having the relative do the work and NOT having it inspected?
Over the past year, I've been rewiring my entire house. The previous homeowner had his clueless brother do a bunch of wiring. Needless to say, it was never inspected (I pulled all the permit info on my house) and was horrible. I would MUCH rather have the clueless brother do it, and then have an inspector come in and let them know that they did it wrong, and have them fix it, and make SURE it was right. As it stands, I have to fix it RIGHT, and it WAS a fire hazzard.
The inspection is really the key. I've had licensed electricians do really bad work before. Just because you are licensed does not mean that you won't fuckup and burn someone's house down.
Um, you DO know the history of Nascar, right? FYI, it was started by moonshine runners - they were really good drivers, and frequently were involved in high-speed chases. These drivers decided to compete against each other too for fun. Nascar was born.
But back the the FA... these linkages to games / TV / etc. are just stupid. If anyone would bother to do the study on it, I bet they would find bad parenting is the number one factor in a persons tendancy to become violent / anti-social / exhibit criminal behavior.

Grep does real-time searches. Can be VERY slow.

April fools question obviously.
How about nanotech that prevents stupid "ask slashdot" questions or dupe posts?
