You have to realize, kids are not real citizens. I know. That is why I beat my kids on a regular basis. Since they aren't citizens they have very few rights. By beating them severly I make sure they stay on task plowing my land as I see fit. After all, they aren't real citizens.
Parents have every right in the world to say what and what not their children can do and see on the internet on their home machines. I agree fully. The way I keep my children off the internet is easy. I tell them it is a magical thing, only for adults. As far as adult sites are concerned that answer is simple. I merely tell my youngens that those sites contain magical forbidden fruits that will make them wiser. Once again, it is only for adults.
I have doubts as to how stupid Linux users would be. I am willing to bet most the people with those "damn sheep" on the desktop weren't big computer geeks, like most linux users. I know I haven't downloaded anything totally frivolous since I started using Linux in December.
It looks to me as if the case and orientation don't matter at all. I think whoever made it may have just thrown those in there to create another step or two for the solving. Not many people can read at different angles like that. Since it is english it would be intuitive to try to read it like a paragraph of prose. It has occured to me that the message may be backwards or that it could even be a "jumble" where you have to unscramble all of the words. I don't think this is the case at all. The O'rt' appears twice from my breif look, and in the same order, and there are no other 3 letter groupings with the same letters. Damn this is fun!
More people would use Linux if it came all set up. Most my freinds that own Macs just want to e-mail, surf the net, word process, and play games. Right now my Linux is setup for all this after you type "startx". one of my freinds who uses Windows has very little problem using my Linux for her tasks as long as I tell her where I have the shortcut for the file. I think distros should have all of this setup. Instead of seeing links to the RedHat site perhaps they should link to AbiWord. I have faith in Linux.
Everything moves uber-quick compared to Winders, but still certain things lack for me. I still have to watch mpeg, and qt videos in Windows. Linux has a way to come, but it is doable.
I can totally see a VA distro happening. It would likely be flashier kinda like Caldera. It would be interesting to see, but I am not going to ditch RedHat for it unless it is really good. I got plenty of other distros to try yet including Corel, and Debian.
I agree. We (the community) should be thanking any company that gives something away. This will lead towards better competition among the software makers, lower prices of existing apps, and have an overall beneficial effect.
I do not think it fitting to push or belittle the company after giving a gift, nor do I think it the place of the poster (CmdrTaco) to say this was half-hearted or anything of the such. Leave that to the comments.
I really don't care if Windows is free to use. I would still use Linux because I feel that my learning reached a wall in Windows. There is much to learn in Linux and that is what I like. Not to mention I can surf the net, do papers, and all the other things I need to do as a student in Linux.
The reason I care about Windows being open sourced is not so it can be made into a competing OS to Linux. I care about it being open sourced so that I needn't dual boot simply to see Windows Media Files. I don't want to boot into an inferior OS just to call my freinds over the net. I think Linux has come a long way as far having the essential applications that Windows does, but the open sourcing of the code would speed this greatly, especially if the IE and WMP code were with it. If nothing else this would boost WINE to a grand level, something I would much like to see.
For these reasons I am not interested in seeing programmers use their valuable time trying to refine an obscene amount of code to make it a worthwhile OS. I want them to spend a smaller amount of time adding to what we already have.
How many intelligent SysAdmins would switch from Sun to MS. Not many I reckon. MS is aiming this at the people who OWN not RUN the sites. There is also a reason alot of the people owning aforementioned sites do not run them
So Qoute.com has changed, eh? Who says they aren't going south as we speak. When a major website like Yahoo! starts using Microsoft then I will be impressed.
I'm afraid ol Rob has fallen into the "Read The Good Caption about Linux and Post" problem. If Rob had actually taken the time to read the full story and had a good idea that typical users know not, this wouldn't have been posted. Here's hoping to seeing a correction on this.
I agree fully with you. Apple has been even more proprietary than anybody else. I might believe Apple was true to Linux page, but they have released no specs on their G4 processor. Heaven forbid that somebody steal their designs or _GASP!_ run a different OS succesfully on their beloved chip. Think of all the money Apple would use if people who want the fastest system were not burdned with the kludgy OS9.

Here is my .02 cents on this:

Drives with 40x the storage would be nice, but just get a magnet by one. Be just like the floppies of old.
