I agree. Apple has may flaws aside from mouse buttons, yet this is the point that is mainly attacked.
I don't care if a mouse has 1 button or 45 buttons. What I care about is how well I can get the job done. Hell, if I am just using CLI I don't even need a fucking mouse. I don't want to hear anymore griping from biased morons who probably haven't used an old mac for more than checking their e-mail. I was able to get what I needed done quickly, with one mouse button, no problem.
If you can't function without multiple mouse buttons maybe it is time to re-evaluate computer interfaces.
You wanted:
(1) no nuclear reactors (waste/safety issues)
I certainly don't want to be anywhere near a meltdown. Do you?
(2) no coal fired power plants (air emissions issues)
Coal is a rather dirty fuel. I don't think we need more air pollution. Filters may work, but only if installed and properly maintained.
(3) no diesel fired power plants (air emmissions again)
Agreed. I think these would be better than nothing.
(4) no hydroelectric plants (harms [cuddly species of the day]'s habitat)
Since when was marine life cuddly?
(5) in fact, no new power plants at all ("not in *my* backyard!")
Do you want one in your backyard?(6) you shut down existing plants from (1), (2), (3), and (4)
If the power plant poses a safety risk I would rather it be shut down and people just use energy wisely.
(7) Solar and geothermal don't seem to work like you think... or at all (i.e., operate at a loss).
Don't forget about wind. Some places in CA make good use of it. I don't know what the hell we are doing trying to find more environmentally freindly sources of power. We should all be shot.
Thoroughly, California made its own mess and ought to be forced to wallow in it. You're all screwed and it's your own fault.
Geez. You're all heart. I hope wherever you live has a food so you will be "forced to wallow in it."
What will you do? Here's my prediction: Democrats will do ***NOTHING***. They'll sit and endure the rolling blackouts and come up with bullshit to justify them to the people. They will wait for republicans to propose building more power plants, and repealing the legislation preventing their construction. They will quietly vote to approve these measures amid much muttering and while speaking against it or more likely, will simply abstain on eco-law repealing bills to give republicans a majority (among remaining legislators who actually vote) to let the bills pass. Then when anyone, ANYONE complains about air quality or water pollution or nuclear waste in California they will "blame republicans for rolling back all our hard work to protect your environment." Saying they never voted to support that legislation. Yeah right.
Here is my prediction: the Republicans will blame "those confounded computers" as the source of the power crisis and tell us to turn them off. This Christmas light displays I saw this year were enough to keep the entire city (Rohnert Park) running for another month. They should turn those off first, but then, that just wouldn't be Christian. I can't see the Republicans swooping in to save anything. The midwest is in a crunch now because it will take them 5 years to build new plants to keep up with demands.
You want power? Then you have to get dirty *just* *like* *everyone* *else*. TANSTAAFL, you know?
Has it ever occured to you that maybe we don't _have_ to get dirty? Burning fossil fuels is dirty, but some are cleaner than others. We should just quit trying to make the world better and just live with smog and pollution. Once again, what the hell are we thinking?
IMO, Republicans ought to continue the staredown with democrats until they start repealing their own legislation. Make the basterds squirm and swallow their own bullshit pride. As for the populations without power? Well, at least they'll learn what voting for liberals results in (stone age living) and will know better and teach their kids better in the future.
Oh please. Teach the kids better in the future? That Republicans are gods or something? I don't like either the R's or D's, but I hope in the future we are not using fossil fuels.
Nautilus is not Vapor! I have it running under RedHat 7.0 in fact. Check out http://jebediah.knac.com/linux/eazel_shots/eazel_s hots.html and take a look. That doesn't look like vapor to me.
Earth DOES correct itself. This is normal for any sustainable ecosystem. The problem is we have most likely taken the earth out of the limits it can naturally correct.
>Humans are animals, and thus natural, just like everyone else. We change our environment to suit are needs, as most animals do; and when we >"create" chemicals and substances, the reality is we're just remixing what we already see. Who knows.
Yes, humans are natural, and we can alter our environment. The point is we alter it beyond acceptable means. When was the last time you saw a bear drill oil for heating its den? When was the last time you saw deer go turn on the air conditioning? When was the last time the bluejay decided to build a shopping mall?
>Polyurthene may be a naturally growing tree on some other planet.
And what would this planet cosist of? Would it be hospitable to humans? I am not sure I would want to live on a planet where platics grow on trees, but the atmosphere consists of chloring and methane.
At my college setting up the Linux machines is done by the SysAdmin. The SysAdmin recommends hardware that will be Linux compatible (nothing like a Compaq with a USB keyboard) and installs and readies Linux on one machine. After that, the hard drives are just duplicated. After that there is a whole lab of machines happily running Linux.
I would love to see Linux support every possible hardware combo out there, but if you are going to shell out the cash for a system to run Linux please make sure you have compatible hardware. If a school can't be bothered to figure out that they should use standard, supported hardware, they really don't care about Linux.
I also like how you burst into praising Windows like it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Truthfully you sound more like a Microsoft Schill than a Linux Zealot.
Maybe it is exactly what is needed for Linux to take the lead in the GUI department. Mouse over a folder and get tactile feedback depending on how many items are in it. Clicking and dragging could indicate how close to the edge you are of a window or screen. YOu could even get real feedback before doing in edge flip to the next desktop.
This could be an area where Linux has a chance to get the lead. Lets face it, there isn't exactly much happening (exciting wet your pants stuff mind you) in GUI development lately. Maybe all we need is new hardware.
I don't think such a system would be very popular. If everybody tries to download from a 5 star user, he/she is going to be flooded with requests. It would likely slow down the persons connection to the point where they aren't on Napster anymore.
Take my address. It is ce@lycosemail.com. Lycosemail says they are dedicated to stopping spam. Funny how when I sent them a spam message to be reviewed the amount of spam I was getting in creased 10 fold. Now I am just waiting for that address to die. Anybody care to send massive quantities of mail to that address so they delete my account?
What if you came home to find your parrot had loaded up a webpage that looked like a parrot (you know the kind. All colorful and unorganized) and was trying to mate with it. What then?
hehe. I can just see some poor sap take a big step and hit a tree.
On the serious side I see other issues with the particality of these shoes. First off: why use gasoline? Surely there are other forms of energy that would be safer and cheaper. As long as you are going think creatively you might as well do it in every aspect. Also, who is going to want to fill up at a gas station when their shoes run out of gas? Who is going to want to smell like car exhaust just to walk or run? These shoes seem like they would be much better with certain improvements.
I agree with the premise of the above reply. I don't think it is as black and white as the poster made it out to be.
I think computer use is a good thing. Just as you wouldn't decide not to teach math to children you shouldn't ignore computers either. They are going to be using them in the future, like it or not.
Not every youngin' is going to go over to a computer, see the link for a compiler, go "Oooh goody goody! Now I can make my own programs and be the coolest kid in the class!" Sometimes kids don't do wonderful things like crack open an Algebra book or start to program. Sometimes they need coaxing.
When I first started using computers I was in kindergarten. My family got an Apple//e. I loved to play games on it and got into many fights with my sister over who played better at Mario Brothers that my cousin pirated for us. I never really used the//e for much more than games and a paper or two over the years. That changed. I got sick of our Macintosh PPC 200 upstairs. Almost all the games sucked, it was too slow for the net, etc. So I went back to the Apple//e for a bit. All the games I liked were on two seperate disks. For all Macintosh's faults at least I didn't have to do disk switching. Having motivation I learned howto format the//e disks, copy DOS on them, copy files, etc. I learned on it. Later I went back to the Mac (color has a certain appeal) and found some good games for it (Lode Runner, anything by Ambrosia). Those games tought me more about the OS than anything else. I learned about file and creator types, what PC files were like, and tons of other stuff. Later I moved onto Winders at college. After a year of that eternel hell that resulted in massive drinking I moved to Linux. I think I am doing pretty well if I do say so myself. I even plan on making a program for fun in the next day or two.
The moral of this long speech is that computers take time. When a kid starts to read they don't go for Beowulf or anything. They go for Sesame Street books full of color and pictures. Yet they learn to read. I don't think we should hold kids to a different standard on a different type of medium, like computers.
> At least there is some hope! I like different OSes as much as anybody. I even have an ancient copy of OS/2 on a 386 laptop. I want Amiga to succeed. For some odd reason I lose hope after something has risen from the dead more times than a zombie. Amiga is dead. Let it have it's original glory intact. There is no need to beat this dead horse any further.
Ya, I do like to use command line editors such as pico when I can. However, if I am just starting a language or I'm shaky with it the IDE helps me calm down and see more of my code at a time.
Bottom line: if it is small and quick use text editors; if it is big and drawn out use an IDE.
Maybe not. I think the general idea of don't ship till it's ready is a good idea. However, if a company does delay something by 2 months, something else will be better. If there are major issues with the product it makes sense to delay it. If it is just leaving a few things out of the driver I would rather see it shipped. Technology moves to fast to get everything perfect before something else bests it.
I like the idea, but it would take some explaining or forgetfulness to work. They kind of made Mulder non-expendable back in season 3. Back in the Anasizi Episode of Season 2, Mulder met up with Albert Hosteen. In Season 3 "Paper Clip" it was revealed that if Mulder died Hosteen and his Navajo people would reveal the contents of a disk that Skinner had breifly. It detailed all sorts of damning stuff on the government and E.T.s.
Here is the part from the X-Files website:
Skinner threatens to expose the Cigarette-Smoking Man if any harm should befall Mulder or Scully. He reveals that Albert Hosteen-who read the computer disks-spread the contents amongst his Navajo people in the ancient oral tradition, chapter and verse, file for file.
So you see, it would be kinda hard to just wipe out the Navajo without incident, no matter who you are.
This is why I don't put Slashdot with my bookmarks for News. How many times has faulty or unverified info been past along to us? If I am really busy I only browse headlines, something like this would catch quite a few "browsers" offguard. Maybe/.ers would do a service by moderating news stories.
For all those who want to see more and download the files and help out, here is the homepage: http://www.devolution.com/~slouken/projects/SDL/in dex.html
There is more we can do and it takes very little effort. Since the current government throws us in jail for making a statement, we all must file taxes to support whatever the government wants (ever hear about the Black Budget?). The best way to this this is with our money. On your tax form, don't give your $5 to the republican or democratic party if you don't believe they are helping much. I gave my $5 to the Green Party. I know they want to reduce the presence of corporations and protect the environmet. Do you think Clinton would have won if not for all the monetary support?
There is something wrong with a country that doesn't understand some of the shit people go through...
Depression runs in my dad's side of the family to begin with. I didn't figure that out until I had a concrete suicide plan. I almost went through with it, until I left for college (away from what I hated). I was paranoid the first few months, and after that I really began to enjoy it. Things were fine, but for some reason i was still wanting to kill and hurt. I finally went through a breakdown of sorts and tried to slit my wrists. Trust me, there was no god to help what was wrong with me. On a freinds advice I went to our health center and got antidepressants. I haven't been able to feel this good since over a decade ago. Don't you think that if I didn't want to be depressed (and I didn't) that sometime in my decade of loathing I would have done something about it? Come spend a while with me when I am not on my Celexa and I will show you the crazy world I leaved in.
On the other hand, what you maybe need is a decade of depression to show you that god doesn't help and it is very real, not a sham.
Everybodyu should save up for one of these. 30,000 is peanuts to some people anyway. And just how cool would it be to take part in an Assualt On redmond in one of these. Hell, if nothing else throw Linux CD's to the impoverished masses.
Instead of looking for /var/log/xdm.errors (which may not exist) try this at the command prompt:
/var/log/XFree*
$ grep XAA
That should spit out something like Using XFree86 Acceleration Architecture (XAA) if you have it installed.

Looking at the first 16 posts I am not convinced there is any intelligent life out there.
I think Yahoo! should ban all french related materials since it may turn us into narrow minded, snail and horse eating french.
