Correct me if I am wrong, my western history is a bit rusty. What was so bad about the fall of rome? It took about 1000 years and simply split or dissolved over time. Considering is spanned the whole of the known world, its not too hard to see why. It didn't just collapse one day did it?
I don't think the grandparent is taking into consideration the global nature of corporation. If america is indeed run by corporations, these corps. are all multnational, with investors from all countries in the world. All countries in the world have an interest in the American economy, because our economy effects all other economies. I can't find any evidence to the fact that USA could collapse without bringing down the global economy also.
In two generations, corporations will be even more ubiquitous, and economically, country borders will hardly matter. Of course there will still be patriotism and border defense. The USA will not collapse, but we will be less important then we have been in the twentieth century. And there will still be large gaps between rich and poor. Of course this could all be wrong if Marshal Brain is correct
Thats when you download two or three songs from said album, relize they are part of a whole concept, and run to amazon to pick up a used copy. Or least thats my experience.
To you a $10 bill might be a lot of money. To me $10 is backup in case the toilet paper runs out.
And you are also in the top.05% compared to the rest of the world. I have friends that earn $20 a week (not in USA of course).
Also, to me $10 isn't a lot. But $1000 a month is alot to pay a month in cd's, which is what I would be spending if you calculated out my downloads. And half of it would be sold back to the store anyway.
And you people on here must be retards. I can download 50 albums in one night and it takes me about 10 minutes to queue them all up. And I listen to music that isnt even popular. What the hell are you people doing??
Actually I read that as: Well the popular bands are already being illegally downloaded on kazaa, so why not make them available through a service like emusic, not like iTunes.
But I see how you could have got your interpretation.
Well I dont get paid to sleep, and I can download more then 1000 songs and a couple movies over night. So I am probably making more then $50 an hour while I sleep!
And quality isn't really an issue since I don't use Kazaa.
Does it really matter that we do that much work or not. P2P will continue to exist no matter what the RIAA does. They can't even sue 1% of 1% of the users on Kazaa, let alone the other p2p networks.
And hopefully p2p will just become easier, faster and more secure. And the RIAA will slowly fade after their last ditch effort to sue the world (SCO?). New economic models will be set up and good musicians will still make a living off their music, and life will go on.
I think I will have to disagree with you. A bike is not a piece of artist work. I am pretty sure the design of a basic bike is in the public domain. When I go to Wal*mart or Sport Mart, all the bikes pretty much look the same. What on a schwinn bike is not on a huffy? Its mostly a difference between design quality. Like the difference between a TV made by Sony or Panasonic. If you make an exact replica of a Sony TV I am pretty sure you are not violating any patents.
Don't you think it will be a beautiful day when information is free and the ability to create complex goods is only limited by the amount of information you have about the item. Of course you would have to redesign the world economy, but the world isn't working to well with the present model anyway.
Why are humans so consumed by greed that they need to keep all information locked up so they can sqeeze more money from it for themselves, instead of sharing the information with the world, and equalizing the living standard for all.
Maybe it is a moral issue. I guess I would take the other side though and say it is evil to consume more then you need at the detriment of others.
yet I've gotten one without paying for it (as you paid for yours). Is it morally wrong? I personally think it is,
Man, capitalism really brain washed you. How in any form is this a moral issue. What if I built a bike just like yours? Or if I build a machine that can replicate your bike exactly?
What about people who use P2P file sharing primarily to sample new music before deciding to shell out their hard earn bucks. I can only buy a limited amount of CD's a month and I love being able to sample and know that my money will not be wasted before I buy.
I go to this movie theater near me that only allows 21 and older and lets you drink and smoke during the movie. They also serve full dinner during the movie.
The movies I see there always seem better and more enjoyable, but that could be because I usually finish off 6 beers before the movie even starts.
Just to add to this. I have about 55gb of MP3's at this moment. Some of it is crap that I keep in a seperate folder but I don't want to delete. But most of it is music I love. My room mate has about 70gb. Some of it is duplicates of mine, but all together I would say I have access to about 100 gigs of music from my home PC.
I love Linux, on my server and desktop, but I am curious why you care so much what some guy named Joe uses in his home computer? What effect does it have on you? Are you just trying to ensure more driver support? Or do you just hate MS?
I picture a minority report situation. Instead of scanning the eye, the rfid is scanned, then a beam of sound in shot into your head, a personal ad is played. Now imagine walking through a mall.
So what if its Illegal, its a fucked up law for an outdated system. Fsck the corporationa and the RIAA and the stupid copyright system. In order for there to be a change, then laws will be broken, money will be lost, and if you can't pay the fine, don't do the crime!
Is that a joke? Your numbers are funny. If one out of 100 people make good programmers, then that means 1 out of 100. So if you have 300,000,000 people in the US that means about 3 million of them will make good programmers. Not 60 millions. I dont know how many people work in tech, but given that fact that people who would be good programmer might chose to do something else, like mathmatics, music, run for governer, etc. the number of good programmers decreases.
We are a young country as far as our constitution is concerned, but our wealth is really an extension of Eupropean wealth, which can be traced back to Rome. Its always who has the bigger guns, not who works their asses off. If thats true then the Hispanics will take over this country shortly. Remember, we used to have free labor in this country by way of slavery. Even China can't beat that.
A funnier thing is that I buy most of my DVD's for less then I can buy a CD.
The large is called Venti, Grande is the medium size. Short is like the drink size you get with a Happy Meal at Micky D's.

I am a programmer and a financial underwriter. I guess its back to changing oil...
But their selection just sucks. I couldn't find one band that I would want to download. Hopefully they will improve this.
To you a $10 bill might be a lot of money. To me $10 is backup in case the toilet paper runs out.

Umm, didn't Fnkmaster say his mom wanted to use an MP3 player rather then a tape player?

Option C, "fuck him, I'm gonna have it anyway" is not a legitimate choice.
It is if someone gives it to you for free. I don't take MP3's from anyone. They offer them to me and I accept. Thank you very much.

Just out of curiosity, whats more likely. Getting sued by the RIAA or winning the lottery?
They are not stupid.
Sueing your customers is not stupid?
