The box will be manufactured in conjunction with Pace (Europe's largest digital TV set-top box manufacturer). It will include digital TV as well as the games system, it will also work with digital satellite, cable and terrestrial. The POTS return path is only necessary for the digital satellite and terrestrial systems (cable already has a fast return path), and will only be used for outgoing requests so you pick, load this game and the request will go out on the POTS line, the game itself will download on the high speed digital TV link (whatever that happens to be). Pace also manufacture TV-over-xDSL set-top boxes which also have a high speed return path.
Think about it, you will have digital TV and an online games system that plays Dreamcast games in one box.
According to this story at The Register Sega and Pace have announced that Pace will license Dreamcast technology for their next generation set-top boxes. Pace are Europe's largest digital TV set-top box manufacturer and has made set-tops for all the major UK digital networks (BSkyB, OnDigital, NTL and Telewest) and for US cable networks (Comcast and TimeWarner) as well as digital networks in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia. Looks like their tackling the home gateway challenge from the other side than Sony.
I have actually held off from buying a DVD player because the PS2 can act as one. I am hoping the audio/video quality is as good as a dedicated DVD player. The inclusion of DTS cinema sound is a good indication. I am awaiting the 24th of November (European launch date) to get my hands on one. It has been pre-ordered since June!:)
If I was gonna bad mouth my boss, I'd use my domain as the e-mail address, and PGP crypt the message.
You could but it wouldn't help matters. The RIP bill makes it illegal to encrypt things without registering your private key at a "trusted" third party key escrow agency. Claiming to lose your key if you don't won't work because it is up to you to prove your innocence not the powers to prove your guilt. You can face up to 2 years in jail it you have forgotten your private key and cannot prove it.
I for one will be moving all my email and crypt offshore and will be reading it over one-time encrypted channels such as SSH/SSL. I suggest anyone else who uses crypto in the UK to do the same. They can't do jack about it if its not on UK shores.
I implore you/. could we put off coverage of the U.S. Elections PERMENENTLY?
This is for the following reasons (in no particular order):
Not all of/. is American (and by American I mean U.S. citizen not general resident of the continents of N and S America)
General politics isn't really "News for nerds", we must be careful and choose only the political topics that directly affect nerds. H1B visas is fine, petrol (gas) prices is not.
The U.S. political systems is so fscked up that I don't think it is possible to discuss with out turning into a flamewar.
/. should not turn into a soapbox for people's political views. People get on their high-horse enough around here as it is!
Countless other reasons that I can't be arsed to list here, feel free to add any more you see fit.
Please, let's stand in solidarity and keep U.S. poilitics out of/. (as much as we can anyway...)
...in a geek house. Its great, internal 100Mb network connected to the outside via cable modem. Guts of PCs lying around in various stages of rebuild and repair. Being able to shout round the house "How do you set a TCP socket to be non-blocking?" and get a response that includes the word "EWOULDBLOCK" and not "WTF?". Having some one living with you who has had a PlayStation 2 on pre-order, since last Christmas. Oh the pleasures of living in a geek house! There are however some downsides, having your GF trip over CAT-5 on the way to the bathroom is not recommended (that reminds me, must go wireless!) and no matter what they say, digital cable TV isn't any better than terrestrial it just has hours more crap on it (although we were the first in the street to find out!). But if you like that sort of thing (or don't have a GF) then go for it, you'll have the best fun!
I'm sorry, the USPS of which you're so proud of is crap. Two weeks ago I sent postcards from San Francisco back to the UK and France, neither of them have arrived yet. This is after they told me that a postcard to Europe would cost me $0.60 and would arrive in a week. If you can't trust them with a postcard you'd be a fool to trust them to deliver computer components...to Russia... Oh stop, you're killing me!! ha ha ha
The original PSX redefined the games playing demographic from young kids and teenagers to a more mature young adult audience. I, being one of these gamers, can enjoy violent games without wanting to go out and shoot someone in the same way as I can play a driving game and not jump in my car and drive around residential streets like a Formula 1 driver posessed.
It is not up to the console manufacturers or games publishers to limit violence to protect what is now an equally sized proportion of the games buying market. If you don't want kids buying violent games don't buy them for them in the 1st place. It is an individual parent's responsibility to control their playing habits just as it is to control their TV/movie viewing habits. Legislation can and does exist to assist people in making these decisions such as age certificates and recommendations. If parents decide to ignore these warnings then it is an example of bad parenthood thus it is entirely their fault how their kids turn out.
It is not the resposiblity of console manufacturers and game publishers to bring up your kids, it is yours. If you use a console and a TV as a baby sitter then heaven help your kids.
Long live violent games and people with the intelligence to play them as the fantasy that they are.
Does anyone think it ironic that there is a side panel with a webcam pointed at Times Square on this story?
:)
Shame I'm not in Times Square as I'd go down there with my laser pointer and see if I can disappear from the NYT webcam!
Anyone fancy trying it?
I know there were a bunch of these lying around a while ago but I can't remember any of them. Here's a username/password pair you can use to NYT:
username: cyberpunks0
password: cyberpunks0
Maybe they'll get the message one day...
Imagine a Beowulf of those...
This story appeared on the BBC science column months ago, check it out at http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_8 89000/889951.stm. I posted the story back then and it got rejected. How come this is now interesting to /. users?? Thanks, not!

Considering the atmosphere is around 80% nitrogen anyway, the phrase "Pissing in the sea" springs to mind...
