Take some powerful countries, like France, Britain Japan, allocating funds for high speed backbones whose bandwidth is provided and distributed by volunteer organizations or other NGOs in the country, distributing mainly by the districts population. Now take laws that say a telcom company should allow DSL for free thru its network by its phoneline customers. Also take government policies that update the speed of the bones every three or so years to the several adjacent countries.
Naturally other nations would follow suit seeing the economic improvement such communications allow. Government run backbones would be kept up to speed and private competitors would be hard pressed to provide higher speeds and lower costs. Once the threshold number of countries have this, the countries that started it would be under pressure to continue providing the service, thus a positive feedback can be attained that sustains Free Internet. Apparently all we need is a few smart politicians in a few powerful countries.
She doesnt compare to the fatter neighbor to the south, but the market in Canada is beginning to look good. Beside this I could tell you of Pakistan Afghanistan and Iran's economic conditions from my experience.
Pakistan produces many MCSE paper tigers with dreams of getting into the USA for work. In my college there the CS students were actually briefed on howto get Visas, none of them ever hoped for employment in Pakistan.
In Afghanistan if you say TV they say huh? Even if you were the richest there try converting the currency to the USD. Just grab that PDA and go climb Hazarajat mountains.
In Iran theyre trying hard to educate their public and still block ALL anti-Islam content. Such scale of censorship just isnt working, if you can make something in Java+Unix that does that youre rich. But I think youre wife's not going there.
Honestly, if she's making a lot, that gives you a great chance to further improve the linux kernel!
Hi, I am the owner of the firm Techyon (techyon.ca) and my friends and I have been trying to start coding games and make a living off it. The project (wired3d.techyon.ca) is an FPS game that is completely opensource but its protocols disallows cheating no matter how you alter the code. Our plan is to give out the engines and subsequent patches to that point release all opensource, and sell the online gaming serial numbers just like halflife, along with the artwork. We will also release the artwork for free 2 years after its release, so there. And by the way we're making sure it compiles and uses opengl on Win32, linux, freebsd, beos and macosx and more if we could lay our hands on it. The bottom line is you havet to sell something. Something without which the player wouldnt enjoy the game completely and something he would crave, and it shouldnt be just copied online like a serial number. Also dont forget to release it for windows if you plan to actually make a living off it. The reason I'm telling you this is because we believe in opensource and want centre of gravity of the gaming world to shift to *nix. It would be great to see coders of more than one game genere entering this scene and cooperating to create larger composite multi-genere games, and gamers creating and releasing mods for each of them.
Look pal, old chum, Billy Gatey. I know we've had our differences. But apparently I can offer you much superior stuff for free, something that can boost the quality of your products by leaps and bounds. I can get you already available code, some of which youve already taken and put into some windows etc secretly.
Come on! What is this fuss all about. Why the linux bashing while Hotmail runs on it?? It is time to release The next windows based on BSD4.4.This would be to counter OS-X and its incursions into x86 hardware. This would be Windix!!! The kicker ass windows with a version of Apache called IIS 6.0 and Reiserfs. Imagine the possibilities.
I am obcessed with OSes, and I have running Solaris 8, redhat 7.3, freebsd4.5, slackware8,win2k,win98,netbsd and unixware with each computer having both ethernet and tokenring cards. The FreeBSD machine has a directory tree where all files are stored with different ownerships and perms. They are served on different interfaces as http, nfs, samba, ftp, and netware volumes. security req is low so I dont use encryption, except for the www service to the internet where i use the ssl. These tools are all out there are pretty well documented. They all work well in a practical setting. What else do you want to know?
Open UNIX can join the ranks of FreeBSD and linux. I know I would develop for it. There would be nothing like a free OS that can officially and openly be called UNIX.
Do these others using the network belong to the company? They sound like they can be trusted. Have you tried talking to the MCSE guy himself? It might be easier to convince him than the higher ups. As long as the system is working fine I dont think the higher-ups would be worried, so going after the admin guy is the bet. I'm an admin and Ive taken advice from other workers at more than one occasion.
Beside Broadcast Storms, with my experience I can tell you there are IIS worms out there that ask for/winnt/command/something?something etc and these requests arrive in dozens at a time. I dont expect all cable modem users to use WinNT or Win2K but some of them have apparently reached the critical mass for this bandwidth eater to remain on the network and cause dips of latency at least for Rogers Cable here in Canada. Hope this helps
OK Ive been in helpdesk, hardware technical support and Network admining.. and now getting that foot into that door. Youre dead wrong. Being in a programming job especially contract is great compared to helpdesk. Have you worked at helpdesk??
It is 3:13am and I'm working for a client that I'll probably lose in a week. I'll push and try harder, but I know I'm not behind a phone explaining to a professor how to scroll down. You should take a vacation.. replace your employers if they're giving you a hard time and enjoy working. Take my work the market is NOT bad right now and its improving.
Yeah believe it the tubelights in the room doesnt remain constant but flicker. Changing to a halogen bulb really worked for my computers here. Try this first: On a good afternoon turn off all tubelights and turn on all monitors. Open the curtains to let sunlight in and check the flicker.
Although the linux kernel doesnt take much ram, it can be a mark of how much ram in a system can run it. I remember clearly using slackware on a 386sx with 4 mb ram (version 3.? kernel 2.0.30). I also remember trying a tiny distro called DENU or XDENU with kernel 1.3.x on a 2 meg ram 386sx and it worked fine. I would not try version 2.5 on even an 8 meg machine, at least not with the tools daemons etc that come with it on any distro.
The most addictive game in the world is Civilization. I have played and mastered every verstion and mutation of this game but it never ends. You can play one on a 286 with 640k ram and there are free linux versions, but theres no support group to how to end this addiction. I'm sure such a support group would be in the thousands if not tens of thousands. Civilization clearly beats Tetris, minesweeper and anything else I have been addicted to.
I have used joe for most every programming in linux and unix and will continue. If you need an IDE for PHP, you'd need it for shell programming, html, heck just reinstall windows you dont belong to the Un*x community. And oh yeah, color coding is for the wuss.
No-one seems to mention the Linux certs here well. I am aiming to be Linux+, LPA, LPI level 2, etc, along with the MCSE that I am. Anyone here knows the value of the linux certs compared to say MCSE and CCNA??
I'll bet this chip will have liquid referigeration with 333MHz FSB 1.1GHz clock, 8 mb L1 cache, 64MB builtin DDR SDRRAM, run on 200Watts, weigh 2 kilos and still boot in an 8086 real mode.
333MHz FSB? naaa.... not intel.
Yes they are getting desperate against AMD... hmm...
I'm runnin linux over a 486 and it still seems okay for me. I was planning to get a PII to play Unreal but I suppose i should just go for a macintosh that goes forward in larger strides than Pentium 1,2,3,4,5.
Too many games for linux have different methods for installation and usage. there are RPMS tgzs bz2s, I think there is a STANDARDS problem. This hits especially the ones who want to just play games and keep away from install/compile stuff Also a simple svgalib/console version of the original civilization (with networking) would be terribly appreciated... Sid Meier, listeninig??

I give up.

Two points to make you a loser:
1) You use C#,
2) You claim youre an experienced programmer. No good programmer would lose his language to C#. C++, maybe, not C#.
