You know, being a TN resident, and seeing the current state of affairs jobs wise. I guess they are trying to drive even more businesses from TN. I understand their thoughts on it as a large number of folks are running businesses from their homes. Then when you couple that with the amount of money invested in a large corp network, it does become a significant chunk of change.
The problem they are going to run into is, who is going to do the audits. All these audits are going to require man power with the technical knowledge to find ALL software a company uses. So now, how much does that substantial chunk of change amount to. Not near as much as they think. A skilled workforce capable of travelling and auditing every company is going to cost as much if not more.
Lets try to wittle the number of required folks down further. Buy an auditing software system in which you will now be taxed on yet again. This sounds more like double taxation than anything else. First you pay the tax on the purchase of the software (TN does not have an income tax but does have a state sales tax,) Now you are going to have to pay an additional tax on that.
Now on to the question, what if you use an open source software package that doesn't have a cost. How are they going to tax that? Oh wait, they can't. Now who is going to scream, the closed source devs. Open source is getting preferential treatment.
This just is another reason why the US is falling behind, our educational system is nose diving. Our jails are filling up faster and faster. Could go into a huge rant on that alone, but suffice to say. I will be writing lots of letters.
I can't agree more to the perma death. I have played many of the MMORPG's. Personally, What would also be a solution is once one of your characters on your account becomes a "PKer" EVERY character will become a PKer and have to deal with the same justice . I remember to my first days of UO. Several buddies of mine and I were in Covetous and a group of pks on horseback came rolling through. My heart raced I tried to fight and tried to think of someway to win. We lost. But I came back with a vengance later on. So I can say, the randomness provided by players Is certain a welcome change to the level grind of the average MMORPG now.
DAoC had a level of this involved with the introduction of the wilderness areas where you would be leveling and a group would attack. Granted it was at bad times... i.e. just pulling mobs. But if you COMMUNICATE with your team you can turn the fight around on the attackers.
Now lets move forward a little from UO to AC, Darktide server. Many say it was chaos, but those who truely were involved on the server saw the political face change from day to day until all of the lemmings wanted a piece of the action and all hope under tha same tag so the wouldn't pk'd. Thus the infamous BLOOD was formed. I have to give the guys props though.
Sadly, You have so many people that lack what it really takes to survive in a pvp world all banding together to take on those who could careless if they are outnumbered or out gunned.
I could go into a huge discussion on pvp in MMORPG's but as was stated before... Perma death would be a welcome change. Even with technology being some what freakish at times. LD's server crashes and such. This is where MMORPG companies don't want to take on the responsibilty of creating a solid game on release. Don't take me as saying they are soley responsible. Lord knows I have walkied many people through reloading their systems because they didn't load Windows > Chipset drivers > DirectX > Vid drivers > then everything else. So many don't remember the first days of AGp support with WIN 95 and all the headaches and that was the formula and still is to this day.
If a kid can't enter into a liscense... I see a market opening for kids to install software for users So that they do not have to enter into the Contract... I never saw the do you agree or disagree.
This morning I picked up my paper and read a few of the headlines. From there i went to the comics. While looking back on the event and looking at why I recieve the newspaper, I came to the conclusion, childhood. As a child I found lots of uses for the the newspaper. Namely the pirate hat. I gained lots of enjoyment and creativity from the paper from reading the funnies then using the funnies as wrapping paper for gifts and so on. Can there be another use for them? Yes. maybe if more reporters would not just spout statements before actually researching and gaining a bit of knowledge on the subjects, i.e. the computer industry. More reporters now look for nothing but hype rather than fact. What makes Slashdot efective from a reporting standpoint? TO me it is the abiltity to actually go to the source of the news and read more directly from the source. The only other reason I find use for it. For the friday issue our local prints a What is happening during the weekend section. In this section I am able to find all I need to know about things to do.
I am realitivly new to the open source side of life. But one thing escapes me. If the MPAA was really thinking, they would have either A: applaud an individual for making it possible for another OS other than Windows to view DVD movies which were purchased legally. (The cost of copying a DVD movie would be far more than just buying the silly thing in the first place) B: Make a port so that individuals wish to use an alternative OS can and not be hindered.
I know it mainly boils down to the all mighty dollar but logic states to me. The more OS's that are capable of reading a type of media the better. As far as I am concerned that is the reason for him decrypting it in the first place.
