I don't know what's up with these formerly "legit" news sites. I've been seeing more and more rumors-type information posted on ZDNET and C|NET lately. (e.g. the story a few days back about the Apple handwriting recognition software possibly being used in a handheld device)
I like rumors, but I prefer they come from the rumors site, that way I know how big of a grain of salt to take them with.
They shouldn't have to redesign any hardware to change the video card, it goes in an AGP slot (on G4s at least). If anythig it would just require new drivers to be written and installed with the OS.
Can't eBay just write some sort of filter/script that checked user input and removed any "dirty" words? I'm sure George Carlin would be appy to provide them with a thorough list
If someone had lots of Napster Karma, people would know they had "quality" music and want to download from that person. The only problem I see here is that everyone wanting to download Seek and Destroy from the same 3 people would tie up those people's connections and slow things down.
Maybe I'm nitpicking but, IIRC the licenses weren't really revoked. The licenses were valid for Mac OS 7.x only. When Apple releasd OS 8 they opted not to license it, thereby making it impossible to make the clones with a current operating system.
I never did understand what stopped the clone makers from buying OS 8 off the shelf for inclusion with their systems...
It is no secret that Steve Jobs likes to take potshots at the rumor sites, whther they are true or not. I remember in one speech he said something ot the effect of "If you read the rumors sites you would think that [G4 computers I think] will be available in a few months. It is available today form the Apple Store."
This made me wonder if Apple doesn't "leak" some info just to throw off the rumor-hounds and to make product announcements more spectacular. Showmanship? You bet, but it helps sell computers.
MOSR is "known" for being inaccurate in many cases, but that is part of being in the "rumors" business. Lately MOSR has been more and more careful with readers explaining that rumors are rumors and no one should base any sort of decisions on them until (if) they become fact.
Is that because, like the Maytag repairman, they don't have a lot of machines to fix?
Since the Mac techs aren't busy trying to install a.dll that prevents the machine from booting properly or arguing over which distro of *nix is best, yes they do have spare time. That's also why TCO is less on a Mac than any other system.
I'm going to keep reading his articles and bitching about them until someone at slashdot wises up and kicks Jon out on his wanna-be-geek ass and starts posting articles that have some relivance to those of us living outside of JonKatz's little world.
Or you could just not read his articles.
Regardless of who writes them, I appreciate a little non-geek reading once in a while. As for truth or accuracy, you can always take that with a grain of salt.
What's the problem with you people? I realize that for some reason a lot of you despise Jon Katz. Well, on the front page, a few lines above where you clicked "Read More..." it says "Posted by JonKatz on...." If you don't want to read Jon's (or anyone else's) stuff DON"T CLICK THE DAMN LINK! No one forced you to read his or anyone else's stories.
I don't have an opinion one way or the other about Jon's work, but I am tired of all you whiny bitches complaining about it and "wasting everyone's time...."
In Arizona you can pay your registration online as long as you don't need an inspection, which is cars less than 5 years old I believe. After that it is only every other year.
Most impressive, though, is that I was able to get a new license with my new address on it online. Since moving to the credit card style IDs they save your picture and therefore I just logged on, paid $6 and two days later got a new license with a new address, no lines.
My only arguement was that it actually cost $2 more than if I had gone down to MVD and waited in line. The extra $2 was worth it, but I disagree with companies charging me a fee to make their work easier. (I didn't require the time of a "teller" and they can presumably do these online IDs during "slow periods" when a person might otherwise be idle, if that ever happens at the MVD.)

1. If you are a graphic artist, sooner or later some client will send you a disk from another graphic artist with a file done in Illustrator 9 and you may be required to buy or warez version 9 in order to complete his job.
2. I recommend anyone who is considering buying or upgrading Illustrator to reconsider and buy Canvas instead...
3. And Corel's Photopaint... is good enough to COMPLETELY REPLACE PHOTOSHOP for much less money.
You say that if I use Illustrator 8 I will one day need to upgrade to version 9 to accomodate a customer? That is very valid and very true. The part I don't understand is that using Canvas/PhotoPaint will allow me to not have to upgrade to the newer Adobe versions. If there is some new proprietary feature in Illustrator/Photoshop that I need to use and can't be circumvented by saving as an.eps/.tiff/.somethingelse then you can be damn sure some other companies product isn't going to support it either.
I would still have have to get raped by Adobe for their upgrade and I will have wasted time, money and training on another product as well!
In the graphic arts industry it is extremely difficult to deviate from the "industry standards" because your service bureau probably doesn't have it/doesn't support it/doesn't have anyone who knows how to use it/doesn't know what it is.
Although it pains me to say it, if that is true that would mean that, for once, government is setting a good example of what to do.

I agree. What is my liability if someone else stores stolen credit card numbers, kiddie porn or (gasp!) DeCSS source code on my drive?

I knew more than all of my teachers and was making more money than them before I graduated.

Don't forget to give him the chance to "casually" mention the fact that he has a girlfriend.

I really liked that "Signs" song he covered.
