  1. Re:Laptop incompatibilities on Linux Is Going Down · · Score: 1

That microsoft guy is a moron, I just installed Debian on my laptop a couple weeks ago and it works GREAT.
Kernel 2.4.0 (vaporware edition, according to wired), everything works except the winmodem and thats because I haven't bothered to attempt configuring it considering I sneak it into the rackroom at work and tap into the 4 T1's.

Heck, I've even got a nice little battery monitor applet, Linux is in NO way lacking on my laptop.

    okay I'm done exploding.

I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere with a 26400 dialup and I hate it.

I went into Radio Shack a couple months ago and asked about their MSN Broadband with the small dish. The guy there told me it was only available in St.Louis. I promptly asked how satellite(sp?)access could be limited to a single state when its up in space. He said "OH, I thought you meant DSL."

I also asked what a CueCat was (I already knew about them, I just wanted one without getting funny looks). The guy explained it for about 5 minutes. "YOU GOT CANNED CORN? you Put this ON the can of corn, and you can SEE, what you can MAKE, with CANNED CORN!"

ah I love radio shack :)

"NO Thats not how you blow up an oil rig timmy!"

Please don't even suggest such a horrible thing such as devoting yet another government agency for something that people should have control over.

IMHO, I think games should be rated by some sort of organization (which they are) much like the film industry. just like a 5 year old can't get into an NC-17 movie. And if it requires an ID to purchase it, then thats just great. But limiting the creativity/artistic talent of game developers because of things being just a little too real seems like a waste to me.

    Okay I'm done,

  8. Already been done? on Using Your Head As A Joystick · · Score: 1

I remember a few years back there was a similar device except it was a bulky looking helmet that tracked head movement. When I first saw that, all I could think of was "yeah that'd be just great, you're in a firefight and you have to LOOK AWAY from your monitor in order to look the other way?".

it just seemed silly, and this product also seems equally silly. And what about those people that can't help but move their heads a full 360 degrees while playing games and even rock their upper torso around (I can't help but laugh at these people).

Oh I know, how about we glue kournikova's raquet to her head, that way she'll be able to play tennis with her head! IT would be COOL that way.

    okay I'm done :)

I've got a visor deluxe and I love it, I just got a cheapo $4 AAA battery recharger from radio shack yesterday (I was about to go poor on overclocking it to play gameboy games).

Why don't "santa's little helpers" make a springboard module that allows for simple radio communication between visors/palms. Just a 300-400 foot range is all I ask, so I can tell if my friends are near.

Nifty Cheap Toys are ALWAYS good. $150 for a peice of paper is a great deal too.

But anyway, it actually sounds interesting, it runs the 2.4 kernel and X.

Not to mention http://developer.agendacomputing.com/ appears to have documentation/tools eventually so you can write your own cheap little apps. Which I assume you wouldnt have to pay for. And if my memory serves me right, I seem to have heard that in order to write soft for Palm, you have to buy a slightly expensive SDK. (not sure about that though).

And its got a decent amount of ram too, and for some reason this interests me more than the VTech Helio which was also, advertized on slashdot not long ago ;)

  13. Re:Robotics and Web Design... on Ideas for High School Computer Projects? · · Score: 1

I'm in high school and I think robotics are cool, I'm actually trying to build one on my own at home. I went out and bought an OOPIC for $50. It's really a neat little thing. Allows you to interface things to it like lights, servos, motors, etc. And then you can write a little program for it in Basic, C, or Java. Just get the kids some of those throw them in teams or two or three, toss them a handful of $10 servos, see who can build the best walking robot, whatever.

I find that a lot more exciting than making stupid "Hello World" programs. :)
