Not in a negative sense. Orwell was a dyed-in-the-wool democratic socialist, and an ardent anti-communist. If you think that there is no different because they both use the word socialism, then you must think that there is no difference between the US and fascism, since both are capitalist. Please, stop embarrassing yourself.
At the low altitudes that these will fly, the power necessary to reach the satellites will be much lower than geosynchronous or even Iridium satellites.
The link budget calculations have too many other things to say how important that is without looking at the other factors, especially when you consider that battery power, not Tx power, is what matters. Iridium satellites sit at 780km, but I haven't found any info about the Google proposal. Also, Iridium satellites run L-band (1-2GHz) but Google's are Ku-band (12-18GHz). Power amps are much less efficient at Ku, and there is greater rain fade. 2dB may not sound like much at first, but it means you need 43% more Tx power. You can have much higher gain antennas at Ku band, but that only matters if you can keep the things pointed right.
I'm afraid I don't know either of those people personally, do you? Or are you you simply relying on public image and the usual BS stories people pass around about well known people.
hate to burst your utopian-bubble, but the last time i checked, in world history Government has caused, roughly, about a bazillion times more pain and sufferings than any corporation could ever even begin to conceive of
So now you think you live in Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia? Now who has delusions.
i can't get my head around this "trust the government" meme
Neither could the people who wrote the Constitution, which is why we're supposed to have freedom of the press and elections. It's far from perfect, and thanks to corporate influence it's getting worse, but I'm still not learning the Horst Wessel Song or the Internationale.
BTW, you do know that one of the main complaints of the people who wrote that Constitution was the way the British government was influenced by the East India Company, right? Look up the actual causes of the Boston Tea Party. Oh, and check how that company ruled much of India for 130 years for its profit.
I dont have any hope in our current government to do the right thing
I don't have much hope either, but I am certain that the financial industry will do everything in its power to fuck me up the ass. I'll take ineffectual any day of the week.
Honestly Canada's health care reputation is based on its performance in the 80's and early 90's its pretty shit right now especially if your not in Ontario
Evidence? (preferably not from Fox news).
Don't worry though, health care costs in the US have gone up way faster that inflation, with no appreciable improvement in outcomes but a higher likelihood of bankruptcy.
So a bank that hands somebody a few hundred thousand dollars without due diligence is not at fault?
While we're at it, what changed? I got my mortgage in 1999, and it came with all sorts of things beyond (a largely meaningless) credit check, like past tax returns showing level and continuity of income, disclosure of other debt, and all sorts of sniffing up my butt even though I have an honest face. What suddenly made banks so trusting? (hint: look up CDO's, CDS's, and all sorts of other three letter scams that were popular around 2000-2008).
i agree that its not the banks fault. Its the people who bought the homes, but its also the governments fault for mandating banks make the loans
Ah, the CRA red herring. Passed in 1977, but magically took 30 years before it had any ill effect.
Let's be clear, Google is very good at doing what they do.
You're making the classic mistake of thinking that because a company, or for that matter a person, is good at what they do, then they must be doing everything right. No, being good only means that you're doing enough things right, not everything.
Why wouldn't Google want to find the best technical people to solve technical problems?
They do want to hire the best people, but if you think that everyone involved in hiring at Google, or any other company, is completely rational and bias free, then you're making a ridiculous assumption. People all have their prejudices. It doesn't necessarily mean that they're outright bigots, or that they're even aware of their prejudices. Part of it is a natural human tendency that, if something is successful, then the best thing is to keep doing it the same way. When you're talking about relevant considerations, that make sense, but people are often unaware of their prejudices. If SV was founded by left handed purple people with three eyes, then there would be a subtle prejudice that that's what good SV people look like.
Let's not omit it, because it's an integral part of the problem, which is not limited to women and black people. Those are the ones that get the headlines, but notice that "the EEOC doesn't ask for and Google chose not to disclose anything about the age makeup of its workforce". There is also no mention of prejudice against Americans, which occurs because "everybody knows" that Americans are lazy and ill-educated. They have no drive. In this case there is a positive stereotype about "those people", but of course a positive stereotype is not a stereotype.
We have to hire idiots who can not read or write to satisfy the requirements of race-bating lawyers.
Similar problems occurred during the World Wars. In the first, employers had to hire black idiots. It got worse in the second one, where they also had to hire woman idiots. On the bright side, we won both wars, in spite of the idiots working for the Arsenal of Democracy.
I'm all for hiring the best person for the job, but if you think prejudice is always explicit, or that people are even always aware of their prejudices, then you're in la-la land. I honestly don't know about women and black people in SV, but there are all sorts of ways to inject prejudice. "Not a good culture fit" (meaning over 35) is one of them. I also wouldn't be surprised if there is a bias in favor of South and East Asians, because everybody these days is inundated with the idea that they're all so smart. Remember, it isn't a stereotype if it's a positive stereotype.
People are heavily biased towards confident people... There's an inverse relationship between skill and confidence.
I try to take that into account. A certain level of confidence is good, but beyond that it's a red flag. If you're certain that your new idea will work, then I'm certain that you're an asshole.
the EEOC doesn't ask for and Google chose not to disclose anything about the age makeup of its workforce
Of course not - you didn't think they were actually serious about age discrimination, did you? Besides, everyone under 35 knows that everyone over 35 is not just obsolete, but senile. Except for top management of course... no, them too, but it's acceptable if you're one of the anointed class.
Democrat president Franklin Delano Roosevelt tried to control the economy; During WWII he froze wages.
What's more important, defeating Nazi Germany and the Japanese Empire, or worshiping the Market God? I think we won that war, in large part because the Arsenal of Democracy produced war materiel at a rate made the few rational people amongst the enemy scared shitless. Wage and price controls, and rationing, meant that we didn't have the sort of inflation that trashed the American economy after other wars. The War Production Board (a/k/a the control in a controlled economy) was disbanded after the war.
As for the short-sightedness of FDR (I wonder if anything other than market distortions was on his mind between say 1941 and 1945?), which helped lead to widespread employer paid health insurance, another liberal Democrat by the name of Truman tried to fix that after the war. He pushed for universal health care, but was defeated by the Republicans.
It doesn't have to be single-payer. Germany has over 100 healthinsurancecompanies (German style spelling), but they're non-profit and heavily regulated. Works for Switzerland and a number of other countries too.
Does the USA have a strong 'buy American' ethos still?
How can you tell if something is actually made in America. That label on the box just says where it's assembled. The exception is cars, which must be labelled by total value added in the US, not just assembly. I have a car that's 85% value added in the USA. It's a good old-fashioned American brand called "Toyota". 85% is much higher than most so-called American cars.
he was writing about socialism, wasn't he?
Not in a negative sense. Orwell was a dyed-in-the-wool democratic socialist, and an ardent anti-communist. If you think that there is no different because they both use the word socialism, then you must think that there is no difference between the US and fascism, since both are capitalist. Next they need to work out the sequence for Ginger (Red for you Americans) Hair!
Hear, hear!
Who cares about yellow hair when there are attractive women.
OP is a dyed blonde.

You'd also filter out Steve Jobs and Elon Musk.

Can you be gay and transsexual at the same time? That's my contribution to Zen koans.

"those dumb West Virginians fucking their cousins"
Nah, WV was a Union state. We only say that about Traitorous states.
We're educated we speak clearly and concisely
We're educated [and|so|hence|<semi-colon>] we speak clearly and concisely[.]

Are you saying that all White males are assholes without decent social skills? That sounds racist.
Not really - he's also applying it to East and South Asian males.
Now we can pretend that we are blind to race, gender, creed, or whatever, but that's more likely self-delusion than honesty.
"Not a good culture fit" is the Jim Crow of the 21st century, and you don't have to have dark skin for it to apply these days.
Congress to Google: Why aren't there Democratic voters in your workforce?
You do realize that Republicans control the House, right? Or does that not count because of the perpetual victimhood of the right wing?
What percentage of applicants have been Indian?
With or without H-1B's?

Now tell me why you keep supporting child slavery and sex with farm animals?
They're part of the God given right to a Free Market.
