The Pink Floyd 'Divison Bell' tour 10 years ago had a pair of 50W (yes 50 watts) copper-vapor lasers. Although they get run through an array of beam splitters, that's still some eye-cooking power, and is taken very seriously in the industry. The effects are programmed so that beams only head skyward and never hit the auduience, and there are a series of fail-safes in place. I remember reading in a trade magazine that they had to get FAA Clearance for every outdoor performance. A truley amazing show, a testement to the art stoners can create with an ass-load of high tech gear.

  6. Re:Thank you, outsourcing on U.S. IT jobs Down 400K Since 2001 · · Score: 3, Insightful

A thought on outsourcing. The latest industrial boom, the IT sector, seems to be following the same path that previous industrial revolutions have. Manufacturing & assembly line workers faced the same challenge when manufacturing of consumer goods shifted to the far east. While many who were unable to adapt found themselves unemployable, the population moved on. It created. Thats what we're good at. Much of the entry level IT work, in many ways, the modern day equivalent to the blue collar manufacturing jobs of the past. I believe that while much of the grunt work will be shipped off to the lowest bidder, the majority of the creative end will remain where it began.
More will go as outsourcing increases, until so many are gone that people over here are willing to work for as little as those in the Far East
You could make more at Starbucks. Comparable wages? I don't see IT guys working for $12/day, I'd like to think that most of them would adapt to the new market. I might be delusional, my job can't be outsourced. I'm also a freelancer. While I've never had the industry fall out from under me, I've had to re-invent myself a few times to keep up with current local market needs. I can't imagine the hardship of having your career disappear out from under you, but as technology moves on, it is inevitable in certain fields.

I use CL NYC quite religiously, found my apartment, couch, vacuum, and even a few surprisingly good dates there (no really). I've surfed it daily, and placed one or two ads, never once have I seen a paid advertisement or been asked for money. There's a lot of gak to sort through, but you can find what you need if you search right. So... how are they making 25 mil a year?

In one of the theatres I work at (I'm a lighting designer) we had sunday game night. We'd fly in the scrim, wheel out the Projector and hookup N64 to the million dollar sound system. (think golden eye on a 34' diagonal screen) One of us would run up to the lighting booth and set the scene, complete with blasts from the strobes and PARs for explosions. It was quite a blast!

as stated before, @ the highest sampling rate, you get a square wave (or triangle or sine with half-assed interpolation) In addition to this, tests were conducted that showed humans can tell the difference between a sine & triangle wave @ 15khz...we're talking about at least the second harmonic here...30khz. I'm all for cranking up that sampling rate!
