I do find it interesting that everytime I've seen Irvings speak he hasn't denied that the holocaust existed. The basic gist I got from his speeches was, that after the fact it's been publised as a Jewish persecusion. In fact they made up around 50% of the victims. Gypses and Homosexuals were also killed, in concentration camps, making up a massive portion of those killed. Interestingly though, the reporters had the same questions as you, asking him why he said the holocaust didn't exist, he said he didn't deny it existed. Funny, the reporters just continued on with the same questions ignoring the fact that he accepted that the holocaust existed.
I think the Irving is right in the respect that it wasn't just a case of anti-semitism, those that were targeted came from a larger spectrum than that, and that makes it all that much more horrible.
I find it interesting that a person can be placed in jail for questioning history. I think history like other scientific endevours should be questioned and evidence should be asked of it. Somebody should be allowed to have an opinion and attempt to back it up with evidence. If people believe it, well... who knows. Hell some people believe in Intelligent Design.;-)
The Australian Taxation Office is the so entrenched with microsoft products, I doubt that will ever look at moving away from these solutions.
Perhaps the greatest entrenchment is something called the ATO innovation centre. This is where they collaborate at a high level with microsoft, on new products and solutions to what they're working on.
I'm sure I would have heard about news as big as the ATO closing down their innovation centre so one can assume, they aren't even close to getting rid of ms, but are still deep in bed taking a pounding in the wallet.
Other reasons I'm doubtful of the move are custom pieces of software that have been made for the ATO would have to be ported. I know for a fact that the company I work has over the years written a large number of pieces of software for the ATO using, vb and.net. Now simply the cost of moving over these third party software pieces would make any more away from microsoft extremely difficult.
There are these wonderous things called books. Before your time perhaps but they represented entertainment and great value for money. A 1000 page book costs in australia around $20, while a dvd $20 (for a cheap or on special one), $30 is around the norm, $40 for those made by George Lucus. Now a dvd has around 2-3 hours with an 8 hour maximum basically on entertainment. A 1000 page novel usually takes me around 8 hours to read. Considering that my reading speed is way above normal. I would then propose that novels provide a much greater value for money entertainment than dvds do.
I purchased a sony ericsson T610 not too long ago. I admit that I bought a sony ericsson bluetooth headset because I wasn't sure what else would work with it. But the talk clarity is amazing. Not quite as good as normal mobile reception, but worth it when you can talk away from your phone and keep talking. Coolness factor that nothing else. It talks to my pc through a dlink usb dongle without a single problem. Now the ability to connect to your pc without wires is something that is unbelievably convenient. I can walk into a room after someone has sent me a contact and just click on sync and boom, I have the address on my pc too. No fiddling with wires etc. I'm including a list of cool things I've got going between my mobile phone and computer with bluetooth for those people wondering what they can do with it. I'll give the url links after the comments.
Just the amount of things things that you can do with your mobile phone via bluetooth are amazing. There's a nice program called multisync that syncs my addressbook, calendar and tasks with evolution. (yes I only started using evolution after I got the phone). OpenObex allows me send and recieve files to and from my telephone. I have a nice gnome gui over this that allows me to drag and drop. obexftp semi works via bluetooth. But probably more of a case of semi works with my mobile phone.:) And finally there are programs that bring up and sms alert on my screen and then allow me to respond on my pc. i.e. I write the sms on my pc and click send. It sends the sms to my telephone, which then sends it. All of this via bluetooth. Other people have setup things like remote controls for xmms and mplayer using their mobiles.

At the moment I don't pirate anything as far as CD or software goes. But I'm waiting to see if a CDR tariff gets imposed in Australia, since "everybody" pirates music there should be one imposed.
When they do so, I'm going to pirate every single one of those cd's from those record companies that get revenue from blank CDs. After all I think it's only fair that if you live in a country that has these "taxes" on blank CDs that you get the music that you rightfully own since you're actually paying for it.
The actual purpose of a patent is to cause people to share innovation. By sharing the innovation (the knowledge of how a new technique is used), it allows the creator a monopoly for a short period of time for sharing this knowledge.
The problem being of course that with software patents are extroudinarily broad and often appear to be patent's on prior art. For example the breadth of some of these software patents appears to be the equivalent of me patenting a mobile communication device, that allows verbal communication via the use of microwaves. Suddenly I've just patented the mobile phone. This creates a problem since it's not sharing an innovation, or the information of how to make it. So it means that people are getting a monopoly without the exchange of information. But the information sharing that comes with patent's on things such as hardware does allow people new ideas and share information that would otherwise be held under lock and key. And this in my mind is an extroudinarily good thing.
I was a little bit curious as to how many people have actually written an installer. It appears to me that most people believe that if you magically go to control panel and add/remove that the program will be removed.
You can easily write an installer that will leave files behind. The best places are usually places like winnt/system32. After all that's were all the upgraded system dll's are placed, and since there's so many files there people don't seem to look that hard. Personally I'd be looking through other things most notably though would be windows nt services to see if they plugged in anything spicy there.
Just remember just because you "uninstall" something doesn't mean it still isn't there.
You have to be able to walk before you can run. The information that you should learn at University should be a firm grounding in the theory and practices that you'll use as basis for your choosen field.
As far as new tecnologies and breakthroughs go you can never understand these things without a firm understanding of the basics behind it.
Donald Knuth's books the Art of Computer Programming, these books were written many years ago, yet the information contained within is extremely valid today. In fact they are considered to be books that most computer programmers that I know say "I have to get a copy of that"(if they don't already).
I personally believe that the most inportant thing a university degree shows is that you can learn and think. It's in fact a person's a ability to learn new things, solve problems, it's these things that are important. And a University degree should show that you have the ability to do this.
