If they think that running a dual-boot machine is a sign of someone engaging in illegal activities because you can allegedly "hide your activity", then I can imagine what they'd think if you booted from a Live CD, which doesn't write ANYTHING to the hard disk at all. That's what I'm saying.

If you're talking about periodicals or school textbooks then e-book readers make sense to me, but if you're purchasing a piece of literature that you're going to keep beyond next week, then I think e-books are more trouble than they're worth, especially if someone can arbitrarily decide that you shouldn't be allowed access to something you've already paid for, regardless of whether the person mentioned "should have made backup copies". I'd feel less strongly about this if there was no DRM involved, but as is, I say "no way".

Hell no, they would have bombed all their enemies back into the stone age. It sucked to have had to use them in the first place, but at the VERY LEAST WW2 would have gone on for YEARS longer otherwise.

Beyond Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the only valid use for nuclear weapons has been as a threat. Actually using them at all is incredibly irresponsible and stupid. Dismantle them and find some peaceful, constructive use for the fissionable and otherwise radioactive materials. That being said, we need to keep a few of them around, intact, ready to use, because humans are still stupid and violent animals, therefore we NEED the deterrent of the threat of their use to keep the more violent and irrational ones in check.

Yes, I know I'm paraphrasing pro-gun rhetoric here, but I believe it applies. The only way that International Law works, is if all the countries involved agree to abide by said laws -- which we all know doesn't work often enough. One day, assuming the human race actually lives long enough to see it, we MAY evolve enough, physioligically and mentally, that our needs for things like solving problems with aggression will become obsolete; THEN things like nuclear weapons will have a chance to go the way of the dinosaurs. Until that day comes this technology will (unfortunately) have to exist. You can't put the genie back in the bottle once you've let it out, after all; knowing something is possible is half the battle towards MAKING it possible, even if we effectively buried the knowledge of how to create nuclear fission, physicists would work backwards and rediscover how to make it happen anyway. I applaud Obama's sentiments on the subject, as I applaud the realism of his thoughts when he says "not in my lifetime".
