  1. Data Mining... for BRAINS! on Second Hand Hard Discs Reveal Secrets · · Score: 3, Interesting

1.) All right allready! We now have established beyond a shadow of a doubt that yes, a similar story was posted earlier this week.

2.) It amuses me that people seem to think that /. editors have so much time on their hands that all they have to do all day is read headline and forum posts. That's what moderators and metamoderators are for, and they may not catch every story that comes down the pike.

3.) Perhaps the most enjoyable "data mining" find on an old hard drive for me was over 1000 songs in MP3 format. After deleting the ones that I didn't like, there were still nearly 950 of them. They now make up the bulk of my music library.

So you expect others to "waste" their time designing the system, writing the code *and* writing docs AND then get nothing for it.

The point is, since they do have better things to do, such as designing a system, writing the code *and* writing docs, that's why we pay them for using up their valuable time.

...And I was self employed for a while. I know the drill.

Support is one thing, documentation is something else entirely. Most compu-geeks (myself included) would much rather find a doc on the problem and fix it themselves. Barring the ability to do that, THEN they call support, and by that time we feel that the charge is worth it, because we're "wasting" another persons time with a problem we can't resolve ourselves.

If enough people use it, sure, you'll see "Missing Manuals" and such, but you'll also find the same stuff scattered around the Internet. What this company is doing sounds to me like making a widget that needs Q type batteries, they're the only ones who make, they know it's just a matter of time before someone makes a newer/better/faster/cheaper Q type battery, so they're milking the market like crazy while they can. Sucks for PR, but good for the short term bottom line.

    Anyone know?

Get with it! You think Aqua (which, IMHO, is rather pretty) is a bad UI? Wait until you start using Windows! ESPECIALLY anything using the NT kernel. I'd rather use CL only Linux over that monstrosity.

One other thing, have you ever used Aqua? I haven't myself, but if you're passing judgement based on what some other shmuck says, who, BTW, makes a living on b*tching and little else (you respect this guy?), you need to get a life. And a copy of Aqua, so you can actually try the system.
