  1. I second Python on Teaching Programming Skills to Children? · · Score: 1

Please do not start with BASIC, it was good for C=64, but only because there was nothing else (at least early on). Now we have python and other (even more?) fully implemented OOP languages, like scheme. Teach OOP first, they can learn BASIC later if they need to, it is harder the other way around.

New version, Apple already supports on high-end, but likely there is no support for PC, or even interface, or very expensive. Speed close to theoretical speed. Direct PC to PC might possible. Guesstimated speed around 80-95 MB/s.

    Drive Swap 1064 Mbit/s ~ 133 MB/s
Well, you will have to csave on PC, load on the other one. That makes speed at least half of theoretical one. Drives are not physically capable of these speeds, only around 40MB/s sustained. Guesstimated speed around 20 MB/s.

    Gigabit 1000 Mbit/s ~ 100MB/s
Direct PC to PC possible. You need 64 bit PCI cards to get colse to 100MB/s. Guesstimated speed around 90-95 MB/s.

    Ethernet 100 Mbit/s ~ 10MB/s
Cheap, easy, cheap, but slow. No special needs. Guesstimated speed around 9-10 MB/s.

    USB2.0 480 Mbit/s ~ 60MB/s
Cheap, high(er) CPU overhead. Need PC-to-PC host bridge (might be hard to locate). Guesstimated speed around 40-50 MB/s.

  13. HQ Myth is a bunch-a-crap on 15k RPM IDE Hard Drives? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Do not buy the argument of "market forces" ot "high quality componenets yield high price and low demand". Half of the Slashdot crowd and most of the geeks would all buy 15K IDE drives if available, even if it would cost almost the same as SCSI. Hard disk manufactuerers already make the drives, it is just a question of slapping a IDE controller board vs. SCSI board on the drive. R&D cost is about 0.00001 canadian cent per drive. No additional investment beyond the distribution channel, and viola you have a new product, that can potentially increase your market share. There will be a low but steady demand for these drives, and if any of the manufacturers spend a little money on marketing it can actually turn into the battle of RPM (a la MHz). I do not see why this would not benefit the makers.

Well, this is my opinion, and now you have it.

  14. Re:Burn-in on Plasma TVs for Video Games? · · Score: 3, Informative

Most high end plasmas move their virtual screen around on their physical screen. This is a really slow process (ie. 1-2 minutes cycle time) and it only moves a few pixels up and down, so it is unnoticable. This is because they also realized that burn-in is an issue and they need to do something. I have personally watched a Sony 50+ inch at Good Guys for several minutes but it was unnoticable, unless I put my fingertip at the edge of the picture.

However, it might not protect against burn-in in case of more static screens, like video games or public ad displays.

  18. Digital is not (yet) a good idea on The Future of Digital Cinema · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have seen Minority Report on one of these digital theaters in Westwood, CA. All I can say about it is negative:

    - color resultion: really really suck. It appears they use 4-4-3 bits for RGB or something equally inferior. Openeing scene had very visible banding instead of smooth gradients. While this could be dithered, it was not, probably because of compression requirements. It truly sucked, or have I already said that.

    - pixel resolution: is OK, but the black space between pixels is visible. That makes the pixels visible, and that sucks. They need a better LCD panel.

Changes they have to make before I consider digital is:

    a) higher color fidelity
    b) possibly higher resolution (1.5x - 2x horiz. and vert. too)
    c) dead space elimination between pixels
    d) less agressive compression (ie. bigger storage)
