David, I hope your reply gets modded up. Everyone needs to read this. Finally and a remark that is the very definition of "insightful".
I do have some comments about it though:
1. Indian programmers will be better off if IBM contracts jobs over there. Faced with the choice of unemployment or getting paid $0.25-$1 and hour, the latter one is very promising, especially if you consider that you can get by quite OK on $400-$500 a year.
2. Concentartion of wealth issue is a national issue. The US government is the only one that can address the issue, and would in a perfect democracy (which the US is very far).
3. I agree with you on the historians looking back to this time. The trends need to be reversed bit-by-bit, since the propect of a revolution is really not a humane one. Vote. Vote anti-establishment and help reverse this trend.
Yeah, I agree with you about the reason for this move. But think about the outcome, will not the Indian programmer be better off when he finds employment with IBM?
They are not moving to India to better distribute wealth, but that is what is going to happen as a result of their move.
And I agree with you that it will result in concentrated wealth in the US. CEOs will (are) earning 100 millions, while the janitor has to live on $5.75 an hour. Please do take this issue up with your government, after all progressive taxation does exist for a reason. Just make sure to vote non-Bush next time!

It is bad to lose a job, somewhat worse to lose your life. It does seem to bother the individual more to lose his job though.
Think globally, act locally. We need to invent. That is where the strength of this country lies. Be on top of it, you will have jobs. Be mobile and you will have jobs. Better yet start something and CREATE jobs.
1. Brush up your Hindi/Cantonese/Tagalog/Mandarin.
2. While we in the US can keep crying about this (and will) don't you think it is a good move for the globe? This is practical wealth redistibution. Instead of 1% of the world population, now the wealth generated by IT can be shared with 20-30%. Isn't it just fair? Specially if you notice that this is not only an IT related phenomenon.
Effactively the US corporate giants (mostly Republicans) are doing what the liberals have been preaching for a long time (not Democrats, but Greens).
"wait for a violet/blue laser standard to emerge?"
Standard? To emerge? See DVD+/-RW/RAM/ROM/R for standardization example. In other words you will wait till the end of the world...
2nd of all:
Go get yourself a $50 DVD player. And that is before rebate, or without any deal. You can afford this, go ahead. You can invest another dinner when the violet/blue lasers get market share.
3rd of all:
I agree with you about the poor quality, but realistically it will be 10-15 years before another format will come out. CDs stayed around (and are staying) for a while, even if they have their own problems. Have you been buying DVD-Audios lately? Not me either.
Coincidentally (?) it is also very usefult to circumvent the Great Firewall. Way to go, but it would also be nice to optionally have the cached content (ala google) e-mailed as well. That would send the last standing wall crumbling.
In my humble opionion it is better to develop open source programs with highly customizable user interface. (themes, skins, etc). This way you can have both:
1. Capture Mirosoft converts. You should never underestimate the value of familiarity. If someone has been using Outlook for the past 5-10 years, give them Outlook look-alike. They will be switching because it works just as well (more importantly they work just as well) but it is FREE.
2. Improve user interface beyond MS or Apple standards. Innovation is important. Give power users power to customize and you will see magic. See Mozilla SeaMonkey/Firebird/Thunderbird for example.
The VIA 1GHZ Nehemiah is about as fast as a P3-400 on average. When it comes to floating point of vector operations, it is even slower. And the is NOT the mobile version, but the full power one. Sorry, it might not be viable with VIA:-(
Don't get me wrong, I like VIA, even if their products thend to be flakier than others, but they at least innovate. See mini-itx, no-fan CPUs, dual channel ddr, etc. Intel has stopped doing that for a while, as it does not sow favourably on the balance sheets.
Truly suprising colnclusion, OR NOT!

Nicholas Blachford (engineer of the PPC-based PEGASOS Platform) says that the PPC is better than x86.
What an unbiased opinion. Maybe we should really hear the other side too. I like the article for the wealth of info, and we all know the shortcomings of the x86 platform, but the conclusion seems to be biased.
1. take the drill to the top of the case. Make a 60 or 80 mm diameter hole.
2. Get a cheap 60 or 80 mm computer fan ($3 investment).
3. Mount with 2 or 4 screws to the top of the case.
4/a (some geekness, but mobile) Take your multimeter (everyone should have one lying around) and find a 5-12 V power to supply the fan. This should be not that hard for any geek. Look around the power supply. Solder fan wires.
4/b (less elegant, but no need to know EE) Take an old PC power supply, hardwire the ATX power signal. Connect fan.
Actually CF Cards go upt to 4GB now. Right now 0.5 and 1 GB cards are at the size vs. price sweetpoint. Incompatibility comes from the fact that the 2GB and bigger cards need to be formatted FAT32. Only the newer cameras can handle that. FAT16 cannot go to 2GB (remember when the harddisks went through this same exact phase 4-5 years ago?)
Bitrate is 128, 256, etc kilo bit per second (kbps).
These two has absolutely nothing to do with each other. You can have MP3 files with 44 KHz sample rate and 96 kbps. Or you can have 11Khz with 320 kbps.
The only thing that you can definitely tell is if any of these numbers go down, the sound quality suffers. Example:
44.1kHz, 128Kbps is better than 22KHz, 128kbps
and
44.1kHz, 256kbps is better than 44.1KHz, 128 kbps.
Think about it this way:
The horsepower rating and the torque rating of an engine is not related (per say), but it is "stronger" if both of those numbers are high, right?
I assume that the CDs burned from iTunes are ordinary CDs and there would be nothing stopping someone from turning around and ripping them to mp3.
Apple claims (see ipodlounge.com) that the CD and the AAC files are identical, but when you rip it from the CD the recompression will cause significant quality loss. Users seems to report better luck with AAC recompression than MP3. I personally suspect that it only applies to inferior recompressions like 128, 160 kbps. 256 and higher recompression probably will not introduce any noticable interference.

My sentiments, exactly.
Here is where geek gets the negative connotation. Geez, what losers. You can get a t-shirt by walking up a 5:45pm. THE SAME FRIGGIN' DAY!!!
Will you not feel stupid when turning 50 and looking back to this UTTERLY WASTED day?
And you have not even gotten drunk / drugged up. Whose idea was this?
Yes, but you should put it in the context of world population. A population that is exponentially growing.
Religions did kill a much higher % of the then-current world population than communism.
Not that I like either one, but more that I hate both of them equally.

Yeah, but what if opt-in is walking into the store? See MS EULA for this type of license.
And what if there is not opt-out?
Or you actually need to walk into the store to opt-out. But by walking in you opt-in?
It is time for us to register Network. Then we can surely get some $$$ from NAI (an a whole lot of others)!

If it breaks during shipping, collect insurance, go to NY Apple Store and buy one. Easy.
