  1. It's a lowend solution... on The AMD Duron Gets A Home - Sort Of · · Score: 3

Well the 730S is supposed to be a low cost low end solution. Their target market will mostly be pc manufactures instead of more advanced pc users who can build their own system. You'll find this chipset in almost all of the sub $1000 premade pc's (ie. compaq, hp, e-machines etc.)I think it's funny how this chipset is dogged because it doesn't meet hardcore geeks expectations, but i have to ask how many of you would buy a 60 dollar motherboard? not many of you.

Basically the chipset meets it purpose, it's an inexpensive chipset for an inexpensive processor to make inexpensive, entry-level, low-end pc's. I guess it would be the equivalant of the 440zx chipset. Grandma only checks her email, types letters, and researches our family tree. She doesn't need 23500000000000000 fps in quake 3 :)

Now don't flame me because I put the duron in the lowend group, remember that's what it was designed for. I realize you hardware buffs will want to buy them because they perform well and are very overclockable like the celeron, but would you really buy a cheap motherboard to overclock on? I didn't think so, but then this chipset wasn't made for you.

  2. Poor Planning and Leadership? on Is The Wireless Internet Not Ready For Prime Time? · · Score: 2

I've been dealing with Air2Lan, a wireless company providing service in Mississippi. As of right now I don't think I could recommend it to a single person.

The first problem is there are no real sys admins or network techs. It's mainly RF guys. Everytime we've had a problem of not being able to get out they send an RF guy with a laptop to check the signal, but not the network! We get the same reply "it's goin' from this antenna to that one so it's working, must be you computer" Finally after much frustration they realized our crapply lucent router died.

I've also found out we've had bandwith restrictions put on, because their backbont is only a T-1 and can't handle much more from it's current customers, I've been told a DS3 will be put in, but that was 5 months ago and nothing, they advertised a gauranteed 2.5Mbs and I'm lucky to get 1Mbs.

I've even had as much as a week downtime because it took them that long to change an antenna and router at the main location. Also my company bought a new billing office in a location that we were promised they could give us service in. We thought it was fishy since it wasn't line of site, but they said it would work. Well after spending $130,000 on the building they say "can't do it" This was the best thing that could have happened, because instead we got SDSL. It's cheaper, faster, and more reliable than their crappy wireless service.

Basically, I think it could work, in the right hands. But with customer service like this and network management like this, I can't expect too much. If you decide you want to try this then besure you aren't contracted if you decide it isn't what you're looking for.

Your tech is also being timed monitored and logged. Of course you can't expect real tech support if the technicians are only allowed x amount of time on the phone. How can you exaust all posibilities for a problem on an old slow computer that has to be rebooted every time you change something in the network properties (damn windows) in 15 minutes?

Then we cuss these people, call them idiots, refuse to listen to suggestions and are just down right horrid to them and all they get paid is what ever the company can scrape from the piggy bank? We call them idiots, when we are to stupid to figure it out ourselves. It's usually not even their fault, the may know the solution, but the Hot Cube is disconnecting the to move on to the next call.

We pay for support and we should get REAL support. Not a gracious 15 min. time limit and a "reboot and call me back thank you drive through please... would you like fries with that?"

I'm sure many of us have worked tech support, i'm sure many of us have had to call tech support. I hope everyone can remember how bad it can get. Remember just because you've "learned out" doesn't give you the right to act like a total snob on the phone with the technician. I can't tell you how many times i've heard "I'm and MCSE, I KNOW TO RIGHT CLICK!!!" or "I'm running linux, it's not a configuration problem!!!". Sorry, but the other 99% that call me aren't as blessed with computer literacy as you, so I'd rather be to remedial than have someone misunderstand me. It doesn't mean I'm talking down to you. Just because you can install linux doesn't make you an admin or guru, maybe the support rep can offer a conf suggestion or two... why else would you call? don't you think they would be swamped and would know if a router or what not went down, usually they check by request, and if it's not on their end it must be on yours. So maybe a little support from the company and the customers would be nice for a change. Keep that in mind next time you have to call someone

The majority of music isn't top 40 you know. In general it's a really bad idea to sign your rights over to any company. Musicians should always work under a QUALIFIED MANAGER, and have a QUALIFIED LAWYER review any contracts.

wouldn't it be really great if we could move into a 3 processor market in a few years if VIA continues to develope the cyrix 3... I know it sucks now, but then again anyone remember the k5 :) need I say more?

as far as people on aol and creativity... You can't really expect that. Certainly it would be nice, but I think people get more computers now than in the 80's for 2 reasons, they are affordable, and they are easy to use. If it was affordable and not easy you would probably not see as many people with computers as is... other wise everyone would run linux to save money and get the infamous MS refund promised in the license. basically AOL holds your had, has everything in one program (basically) and most importantly is EASY. AMD may overtake Intel on the lower-end server market by offering a Dual CPU solution, but unless they are capable of these other configurations, Intel will still be king in the server room. Remember, one of the main differences between the P3 and the P3 Xeon is the extra "glue" logic that Intel has added to the chips to allow for more than Dual CPU configurations."

Think about AMD's past stratagy. They have never been a company to jump in over their head. AMD always "tests the waters" first. AMD entered the low end desktop market with it's 486DX4's, k-5 and k-6 series. They managed to get k-6 machines into a 49% (compusa's statistic) of the lowend computer market with intel holding another 49%, i guess cyrix had the rest. This brought enough recognition and capitol to move to a stronger chip.

Then they bring in the athlon to compete in the highend desktop market. Not sure how much of that market they have, I think it was around 25% with Intel around 60% maybe? There next step following this patter would actually be lowend server market. I'm sure they will want to test the waters like before and eventually when the RandR has paid itself off move to the meduim or highend desktop. They will need to stimulate demand for a high-end solution by capturing the interest of low-end market. I have a feeling they will wait til 64 bit has been a out a while before moving into this.
