In other words, I have been choosing to ignore the consequences. :) Not that WPA can't be cracked, but it takes longer than the 5 minutes some tools can crack a WEP connection.

I have changed my settings but right now the default is to Auto for the channels. So when I look to find which is "least used" it doesn't even matter. There are too many on every channel.

Also, knowing the Admin password for the router isn't going to do me any good without knowing the WEP key. Also, the FiOS guy walked me through the changing of the Admin password just to make sure that everyone changes theirs. Pretty smart by them I guess.

I don't really have an issue with Internet but I should be able to stream a DVD quality movie from my iMac (Wifi) to my PS3 (Wifi) over UPNP without it being choppy even if it is just 802.11G. It goes fine from my iMac to my Xbox on Ethernet. My guesses right now is that's all because of interference.

Wow, yea. That's a huge frustration of mine. I'm in an apartment building and our only internet option is Verizon FiOs and they give you a Wifi Router that you use with your service... So EVERYONE is using the same device using the same frequencies. I've had worse experiences with Wifi before, but it is really frustrating at times. When I browse nearby access points the list is out of control.

Hard wiring is not really an option here either. Oh well. At least I got my Xbox plugged in.

As far as the dog goes... I never said they don't communicate. They are trying to communicate because they can either SEE or HEAR you. There is a stimulus and a response. Do you see dogs barking into radios to try and communicate with unknown beings? Nope. Maybe you could teach one to do that but he'd only be barking because it's making a weird noise or because he expects a treat.

Your last two comparissons are a little flawed though. It's more akin to trying to read blogs from people in another country. If you're saying worst part of my city, you're under the assumption that I already know it's a bad place to be and that those I'd run into would be hostile. With extraterrestrial intelligent life, we do not know if they would be hostile. Also, we do not know that we would ever be able to have real-time communication even at light-speed, much less visit each other. I see no reason to be afraid.

A dog barking is far different than someone seeking others like them in space. There is a level of abstraction you have to be able to take to presume the possibility of something in the unknown. A dogs bark is a response to a stimulus.

About them possibly being hostile... is that any reason to be Xenophobic? Also, it'd be obvious that we are sentient if we attempted to make contact... Isn't that a behavior that only a sentient being would exhibit? Reaching out into the unknown in hopes of a response back?

That holds true for terrorist too. They can always come up with better and better ways to hide things. The thing is there is very little they can do about people getting nervous about their impending death as they prepair to blow themselves up. It's a great place to try and pick out people from the crowd and we're doing a damn good job, but there is always room for improvement.

Also, I believe this is meant to be used to ASSIST actual people at checkpoints. It can't hurt to have an additional system help pick out suspicious people. Humans can only look at one person at a time as they walk by but the machine can keep a close eye on EVERYONE. What about people that try to get by the humans at the checkpoint and are worked up and nervous but then take a deep breath and regain their composure when they get close to the TSA employees? With a computer they'll be able to monitor and pick out those people well before they even get to the Xray machine and mark them for screening.

Sounds like it can't hurt. It's not like if the machine gives a false positive they throw you in jail. They just use a wand or pat you down. Heck, I was patted down the last two times I went through security and it barely took a minute.

The fact that there are still attempts for people to bring explosives and other weapons on airplanes and the fact that some do make it on should be reason that we need to have screening. The fact that there have been no actual deaths is just testement to the fact that the screening is WORKING.

Also, don't you think that if someone was willing to kill people using an airplane and it was so successful that, if given the chance, they would do it again in a heartbeat?

There happened to be someone out there smarter though. Someone who figured out a way to ID people given this very obscure information. I'd say it's akin to someone hacking into a system and obtaining personal information. They took measures to prevent it but if someone was really going after you it has been shown that some information can be gathered about the users.

I guess I just don't feel like Netflix is at fault here and that they should not be liable for this sort of thing. Law suits are already getting out of hand here.

Also, after reading the article it seems like they HAVEN'T released Birthdays and Zip Codes but that this is only planned for the second iteration. They only had unique ids for users and ratings... The privacy was breached by people datamining other resources. From what I gathered... the people got the identities of people by matching ratings with IMDB ratings... Which in that case I don't think Netflix really provides any more information about someone than they have already made public via IMDB.

First, I don't have any problem with software being patched after release as long as support is there for released software.

What pisses me off is when developers leave their software buggy after a couple patches and then just release a new game for you to buy instead. (See EA Games) I don't expect software to be bug free at release but I do expect most of the bugs to be fixed shortly and there to be continued support as bugs show up. If you buy any other product and it breaks (IE, you find a bug) they fix it.

Also, any "known bugs" on release should be documented. Put it on the box with an address for Known Issues. Then if you are thinking of buying the software you can judge if it's worth it yet or not. Check back and when you find that the bugs you can't deal with are gone, you buy it.
