That's the sad reality of things but it's all been the evolution of our society. We end up holding ourselves back and I doubt things will get much better.
You're comparing the oppression of millions of people to the few people that have a problem with the police...
For the most part, the police stay out of people's business and those people stay out of theirs. It's not like we're talking about opening people's eyes to institutionalized oppression of the masses. I'd say 99% of innocent people are content and unbothered by direct police action.
"Also, cursing at an officer isn't assault but why be a jerk?"
We have the right to be jerks, that's why. Failing to exercise our rights means that we will eventually lose them.
Dramatic much? What would you do if someone was acting that way towards you? If you did that to many people, not just a cop, you'd get yourself hit.
"Cops have a difficult job"
So do plenty of other people. What makes police officers special is that they can legally hold a person against that person's will; this is a dangerous right to grant anyone, of course, so we have all kinds of laws protecting innocent people from cops.
You gotta be kidding me... Do you get shot at on your job? Do you have to put yourself in dangerous situations every day just to help other people? I wouldn't dare say my job is "harder" than a cops. Especially if you put the parent to your post's quote in context. They are referring to the tension that cops are under for fear of violent attack from strangers. I don't often have that fear for myself.
"in my experience are pretty friendly even under adverse conditions."
Some cops are friendly and firmly believe in protecting the public, whom they serve. However, we no longer live in a world where the police only arrest dangerous people. There are too many laws on the books, and it is now difficult to be a law abiding citizen. Police officers are paid overtime regardless of whether or not they were clocking those extra hours interrogating a real criminal. DAs and other public, political figures want to look "tough on crime," and put pressure on the police to be more aggressive; and of course, appearing to be "part of the war on terror" is all to appealing to police departments.
There are bad eggs in every group. Frankly I'd like to see them all weeded out. Anyone who abuses their power doesn't deserve any respect, but those people that are serving the public most definitely do.
Again, we grant the police the right to do things that would be illegal for the rest of us. We must be extremely careful about giving out such a right, and remain on the alert for any possible abuses.
Most definitely, but that doesn't mean you should not give the police the benefit of the doubt. Obviously to follow blindly would be stupid and there are obvious cases when police are wrong, but I'm just saying...
While I appreciate your effort to make good discussion please spare us the babble and provide some facts please.
What exactly would you consider being in jail for "political reasons"? By the sounds of it you're considering laws (read legal reasons) that you disagree with invalid and therefore political.
Laws passed that "take away rights" are taken at the request of the public, where a majority exists that agrees. This is usually due to one's "right" infringing on another's. For example. I have the right to free speech, but my neighbor also has the right to live without me blaring derogatory remarks through his window all day. So it's illegal. What you mean by "fundamental" is unclear to me.
Your statement about the "police state" that I live in leads me to believe you see anarchy as a better solution. The USA is no more so than any other government and if you are opposed to all those then I challenge you to show me a functioning, no, successful Anarchy that has been able to accomplish the things that our current world economy has in the fields of collaborative research and scientific advancement. If the governments of our world were not paying the way for research who would? Don't you dare say the people because they barely pay taxes for it when required by them. There is a reason our world has evolved to be the way it is.
Seeing drug laws. Seeing IP laws. Not all pushed by "Americans". Nothing about IP is fundamentally American even. It's a capitalist necessity. The USA was not the first capitalist nation. Although I do not agree with the ACTA or most IP law, I think without a decent source your argument is not valid.
Charges of selling seeds where legit... And in YOUR country too. In fact the raid, according to the article, was only at the REQUEST of the US DEA. It's definitely illegal in the USA and our officials have every right to go after him considering he's probably responsible for many seeds in America. If your government didn't agree they should have left him alone. Congrats. You're a small minority of people who don't have the pull to get things done. Personally, I wish this whole war on MJ would end. I see it more as a waste of tax money, but what do I know.
If you go to a movie theater and you start filming or bring in your own food or break any other rules, you'll be kicked out.
When you are using a service provided by ANYONE, digital or not, you agree to the terms of the service. If you don't like the TOS you shouldn't agree to them.
Anyone with a modded Xbox should NOT have agreed to the TOS. They would then not have access to the service and if they wanted to petition M$ to change their TOS they'd be fully within their rights to. What they can't do is claim that each one of them is so important that M$ must bow to their every whim and allow the customers to run their network.
Well... They are not really. First, it doesn't effict you "making" the copies. Also it doesn't even effect you playing them. The consoles still fully function. It only effects you using their Live service.
Like it's been said before, if it was your service you could make the rules.
In fact, I have 2 Xboxes. One modded for backups and one for Live.
That's not at all what it's like... MS has a TOS with their web service.
If you break those rules you're off. They offer a service along with the Xbox. It's like a voided warranty. If you tear your car apart you probably won't be covered under the basic warranty if you voided it's terms. They should not be forced to support users who don't follow the rules. Just because they are the only service that offers Xbox Live doesn't change anything. There are plenty of options including NOT using it. It doesn't render your actual product useless at all (like disabling gears would do).
To use your car analogy... They sell you a car and offer you a special fluid you can put in your car to make it run faster. This is under the condition that you don't make any changes yourself to it. Since you go ahead make all the changes that you've done to your car they no longer offer you this special fluid. Sorry. You'll have to buy an un-modified car because they will only use this fluid on a car that is stock.
It's their product and they can chose who gets to use it. An ISP can decline customers, a Cell company can decline customers. Even McDonalds kicks people out who don't follow the basic rules... No shirt, no shoes, no service!
You mean because they are banned entirely from Xbox Live?
Yea, this is still part of their network. I modded my Xbox 360 because it was already overheating and having some pretty bad issues.
I actually bought a second one on Ebay to use unmodded for Xbox Live. You shouldn't be allowed to play illegally obtained games online. M$ doesn't want you on their network they have every right to kick you off.
The nice thing is that they don't ban your Live account. They ban the CONSOLE. This is why it's been stated that you can just move your HDD to a different console and it'll work fine. If you have 2 consoles you can just swap your HDD back and forth and be just fine.
App's aren't downloaded directly from the dev anyways, they are downloaded from Apple. The issue is that most of these apps talk back to the developers server in order for them to function. This includes pirated apps and puts unnecessary strain on the developer's server.
Software like Photoshop, Autocad, Final Cut, Adobe Premier are all basically in their own category
They are examples of "professional software." Basically software that is beyond the price point of anyone using the products for casual use (thus their desire to pirate). Because of their quality people want to use them for private use and thus it likely does lead to an ongoing domination of each of their respective markets. When everyone grows up and goes to the workplace, they already know Photoshop. Do you want to teach them a new piece of software? No. You're going to license PS.
You brought up a good point, but I think this group of software needs to be looked at separately than affordable, consumer products.
iNotes is Webmail. It's a web interface to the mailservers.
Gmail gives web access to Mail, Calendar, etc. and then you can access it with a client compatable with MS Exchange. What Gmail is to MS Exchange is what iNotes is to Lotus. It's a web interface for a lotus system.
A bigger issue is that Nvidia bought PhysX and was the one offering support for standalone PPU cards. These were sold to be used with Nvida or ATI GPU cards. Nobody told the ATI user they chouldn't buy the PPU cards.
Then Nvidia decides to break their system and render this worthless... Sounds like poor support for their customer base to me.
Of course, if the scenario that I described above is not what's actually going on, then never mind.:P
I can't tell what you're getting at exactly...
I notice the same thing in DC though. Something about popping up out of a metro station and assuming a direction makes me feel like I'm moving NS but really it's WE... I don't know how to explain it really but I always feel like W is N too in DC. Strange.
They are still selling computers with WinXP on them. It's unfair for them to just not support it. This is all a ploy to sell more copies of Windows 7 and we all know it.
If we thought Windows was insecure before, just wait to see how vulnerable it's about to become with all the unsupported XP boxes that are going to be around!!!
I feel like anyone should be able to ask someone else of anything, but they should not be able to force it.
Now I suppose force could be in a form of coersion or threat of losing one's job. In this case I would be willing to agree that something is not right.
The issue comes when someone is trying to run a business and they are then forced to go under because they are not making as much money and are not allowed to let the few workers they are paying work longer hours. Then everyone is out of a job and the consumer is out a product.
It's tough to please everyone and avoid people abusing the system on each end. It's bound to happen but that doesn't mean it's good. But, my point was that it's best to find a way to differentiate yourself from the market that is out there.
And, like I said, one person won't usually be alone in this if demands are being made.
That's stupid... That's actually against the law already and grossly out of context.
For the sake of this argument, I'll play along and assume that calling the police to deal with it is out of the question...
I'd kick you in the balls repeatedly until you agree to stop punching me. Eventually you'll realize it'd be easier to give me a little respect than it is to punch me every day.
Yeah, but if another equally qualified worker steps up and accepts then you're screwed.
If you're that easily replacible, then sure. If people like you are not dime-a-dozen in the job market then they are not likely going to replace their entire department.
Usually if a manager was going to make these demands they wouldn't be on only one individual. Wouldn't make sense. If you had a manager demand this of an entire deparement of say 30 people they would all tell that manager to... do something unkind to himself;). Then they would be forced to find 30 people just as skilled but twice as desperate to take their place. Not worth it really. This is why you don't see it as often. Or if it does happen the quality of work goes down and the company doesn't stick around much longer.:P
The way the job market is supposed to work here is that everyone has to compete for their employers and their employees. If a company wants to hold on to SKILLED employees, they will have to cater to them and offer them a good position. Look how M$, Google, IBM and other successful companies tend to treat their employees. They treat them very well because they look to hire very talented people who are not easily replaced.
If you're easily replaced, then you have more people to compete with for your position and you become worth less... Hence, less pay. The choice then comes for you to stick with it and tolerate or find something you're more skilled at and become valuable.
As a consultant I'm expected to work as many hours as it takes to finish a project. It's salary and I do not get overtime. In only my few months since starting I have worked several 12 hours days. Is it rough, Yes. Is it worth it. Definitely. The dedication that I put in is what makes me worth it for my company and the dedication my companies employees put in makes it worth it for my client. So the clients pay my company and my company pays me.:D
