    That's a terrible idea, because the taxpaying public loses.

    A much better solution would be to put the offending police and prosecutors in prison. Revoke the police officers' law enforcement certifications so they wouldn't be able to get badges anywhere else. Disbar the prosecutors.

    That would punish the actual perpetrators without impacting the general level of service to the public.

    Their job wouldn't be so high-stress if honest cops would refuse to cover for the bad apples.

    The community would better support a more honest police force.

    And whose fault is that? It didn't just happen.

    When I was growing up cops were respectable, and were respected. Somewhere along the way they came to believe they were different and more special than other people. They rationalized that because they were so different and more special, what they were doing was right and good. Since what they were doing was right and good, any conduct was acceptable.

    I no longer respect cops; I despise them.

    Is every police officer and prosecutor who participated in Rachner's case in prison?

    If not, then he did not hold the system accountable. He tried like hell and I respect him for that (it isn't his fault that the system is so corrupt).

    How many times have you heard of a successful Section 1983 action against a police officer or prosecutor?

    It's pretty hard to find a government agent willing to take serious action against another government agent.

    The cops should go to jail for a long time.

    I've used Palm products for over ten years.

    I bought a Palm TX, and the on/off button stopped working. Palm's response? "You'll just have to buy a new one." I did.

    Six months later (almost to the day) the on/off button stopped working.

    I'm NOT buying another. I'll buy a Windows POS before I'll buy another Palm POS.

    IT as a subject in British schools is deeply flawed.

    It's a very silly subject, and teaches practically nothing about real IT. It's more a training course in how to use Microsoft Office.

    In other words, British IT training is about the same as American IT training.

    Many people expect way too much from pre-publication "peer review".

    It's been a while since I learned about The Scientific Method, but IIRC after the results of an experiment are published other scientists are expected to try the experiment themselves. If they do the experiment as described and don't get the results described, further investigation is warranted. THAT is peer review.

    It was LinuxWorld 2000; I was there and I saw it.

    I was appalled at Torvalds' rudeness. He made it very clear he has no respect for Stallman.

    While we wouldn't have GNU/Linux without Linus' kernel, Linus would never have been able to produce said kernel without Stallman's GNU project.
