I rather enjoy my ereader. It's superior to printed text because you can adjust the font size if your feeling bleery eyed. eInk is about 95% as good as paper, and I actually dislike turning pages.
With the ereader, I dont have to turn a page, I just press a button, which means that the book stays physically still... meaning I can prop it up on my belly or knees and read handsless (other than pressing the button).
The only bad things about ereaders right now are price and DRM.
Disagree... paper's days are limited as a mass media medium. Sure we'll still have limited paper runs for certain "classics" and for official documents. But your general "Michael Crichton" book will no longer come in paper format. This is of course once we've figured out how to do the ebook properly.
Although there is a variety of discounted titles from various ebook publishers, the kindle is not for you.
Kindles and ebooks in general are for 1) pirates - some people can find a lot of free (free as in stolen) shit on thepiratebay.org 2) the "gotta have the book as soon as it hits the stores crowd" - Its cheaper to buy a book at $9.99 from kindle than $30 from chapters.ca 3) tech geeks - they just want the newest shit
I fall into the last two categories and plead the 5th on the first. the Kindle (rather a sony ereader) is for me.
tru dat... there needs to be 1) removal of DRM - I want to read my books on whatever device I need to in 15 years 2) some way of buying selling used copies.
How many remakes are needed of this story? Wasn't the movie done in the 80s, and a tv mini-series done in the 90s or so? I mean whats so interesting about this "blue eyed cataract" anyways?
much wider selection on Amazon, properly formatted etc. No searching through those stupid evony ads, no spending 2 hours/book with Sed to get the formatting proper. No entire pages missing from the books, no OCR.
However, I get your point. for all of the above, it doesn't make up for free (as in both beer and freedom).
It is different, you've obviously never tried to read a novel on a monitor.
Just try it before you bitch me out.
You see, when you read code/view blogs/web your eyes roam around the screen looking at various different things, your eyes must refocus or something. It must be because they jump around and you momentarily lose concentration.
When you read a novel your eyes do not refocus, they keep staring at the screen and only slowly move across.
I work on a computer writing code all day long. I can work like this for 8 hours before my eyes go "buggy"
sometimes a spade is a spade. Sometimes its just a tiny shovel and is inadequate to the task of digging.
In this case I was attempting to explain that lumping all mac users together as effete elitists is stupid.
BTW races do not originate in a single country, just as you ask for a Maclandia, I ask you for a Caucandia, or a Blackrifa, or an Asland.
Racism is a general term for negative stereotyping now, and no long really pertains to a racial separation... just as many people consider anti-semetism, Islamaphobia as racism, I am equating anti-macism as a racist term (admittedly I am going over the top, and am being satirical in my discussion). You will note that neither Muslim nor Jew is a colour (yet, no one let Crayolla know this yet. Indian red is bad enough).
The second part about being bought was a joke, and meant to further emphasize that if the ggp replaced Mac with say... black, his views would be unacceptable.
btw you dont buy a lawyer, you buy the services of the lawyer. The ability to buy/sell people is in fact, slavery.
Pop-Quiz: what is the keyboard shortcut to jump to the start of a line you have just typed into Terminal.app? Use-case: you typed "cf/Users/me/work/test/applicationtesting/testsuite/runtestsuite/run1/" and need to fix cf to say cd?
It "just works" so long as you dont plug in an external monitor do your MBP and then put the MBP to sleep by closing the lid.....
gggrrrrrr.......
In the above scenario it either "just gets really fucking hot and doesn't actually sleep" or "just requires a reset to fix the dock and mouseclicks"
It also "just works" so long as you dont want to resize your window from anywhere but the lower right corner.... what fucking moron made that UI decision?
But what if my wife is named Paige and I need a beer? I dont want my page turning just because I need a beer.

Absolutely agree.

Just shut it. do not want. noooooo. khaaaaaaaannn etc.... shut it.

Wow, if there was ever a post that deserved +5 informative....
Well, in lieu of mod points... all I have is a thank you, your post was most... informative.

However, when I need to read documentation from my technical specs (see http://www.3gpp2.org/Public_html/specs/C.S0005-E_v1.0_cdma200_1x_Layer_3-090925.pdf), my eyes get really tired after 15min. My coworker has printed that entire spec out and when I read that book, my eyes dont get tired.
Ask not what your country can do for you... ask what your country can do for big banks.
enjoy your iPad then... the rest of us serious readers (those who have to read for work reasons) will be waiting for Plastic Logic.
sounds like a most apt naming scheme.
did you mean to say iRemember?
lies... very few people have ever tried to read an entire novel on a computer screen... its damn challenging
reading things like slashdot is not like reading a novel.
6th note in Eb minor scale.
depends on your scale actually.
