There was a company (I believe they were called INSO) that once upon a time made a set of Windows DLL's for file conversion. One of the things they supported was converting to/from.DOC '95 and '97 formats. '97 was the last one I saw, so they may have disappeared.
I don't know if they had some sort of agreement with Microsoft or they came up with the converters on their own, but they were indeed out there.
I live in West Newton now (at least until the end of the month), and I'm convinced it's the best-kept secret in Boston! 10 minutes from the places you want to go (Back Bay, Fenway, etc.) and not cheap, but well worth the quality of most of the apartments and the conveniences (Moody Street in Waltham is a short WALK away, and there are upwards of 20 restaurants there).
You may be hesitant about VB (understandably), but it's probably the best way to get them hooked. Once they find they can get quick results with it, they'll be bored, but hopefully hooked and want to dig deeper.
For something a bit more "techie" but that can still produce pretty quick results, take a look at Borland C++ Builder or Borland JBuilder. As a comrade of mine has been known to say (we're MFC geeks), "I can do things in C++ Builder in 15 minutes that I'd be afraid to even approach using MFC". But it's still C++, and best of all, the code the IDE generates is all straight ASCII C++ files. No funky proprietary markup that can be trashed with a careless application of Notepad. (At least this was the case with the older versions, I hope it's still true). If you get really into it, you can look at the entire C++ files it generates and learn what those magic wizard buttons actually did in terms of code.
I don't think he said taping vinyl is OK. I think he was saying that bootlegging their concerts on tape was acceptable. I don't think they appreciate any piracy of their studio work, whether it be taped from vinyl or ripped from a CD.
Oh YEAH? Well when I was young, I went into this big strange place they called "outside" and played "baseball" and probably would have found you strange...;)
If I understand things correctly, they can extend it, but not make it incompatible. I know it's not GPL, but does the license require any extensions be open-sourced as well?
The university owns the machines. Nope. This was a student's personal machine.
The student was hosting his web page on his personal machine? Or was it actually hosted on a University machine? Either way, it was probably going through the University's lines.
It was supposed to, yes. There was at one time an Alpha version you could actually buy, and a planned MIPS version (not sure if this one made it to production). They were dropped some time ago.
I know it's really big in healthcare applications. That's the main reason I got out of healthcare applications.

I see your point, but if it were merely a combination of "A" and "B" responsible for turning these kids into raging psychotics, SlashDot probably wouldn't exist, since most of us would be in jail. Who hasn't experienced one or both of these things at some time in their life?
These are two big problems you address. "A" seems to be an example of something that has probably always existed and probably always will. I don't see a means of changing this in any appreciable way. "B" on the other hand is indeed a cause of many problems in my opinion, and is one that can hopefully be addressed and remedied before things get out of control (oh wait, too late...).
I still think that these two things, taken together, are not enough to turn "an above-average mind" into a psychotic. I agree they could be just what's needed to turn a borderline personality into a dangerous one. But I think the personality has to be at least a bit twisted for these things to have any permanent effect.
Point well taken. I didn't thoroughly read the Hellmouth articles, since I usually only enjoy the responses to Katz articles, not the articles themselves;).
Canada also considers "boot-licking" illegal pornography, eh? In fact, it's probably illegal for you to read this comment.

Claims to support through Word 2000 Beta 2. Still don't know if they had an agreement with MS though...

Do not attempt to lick off superglue.
Can you sniff the superglue? Being careful, or course, not to sniff the crack in the process?

Since Napster came along, I haven't sold a single copy of my album.
Oh, wait... I don't have an album...
Let out all that hostility, you nihilist.
Sounds like Darth Vader... Come with me Luke, or you'll star in "Corvette Summer"...
Not to mention all the Penthouse models we'll be hanging with in Hell. Woo-hoo!
Hell yes!
So in other words, you're all for free speech, as long as it doesn't badmouth your imaginary friend in the sky.
Why on Earth would the subject of immortality be a joke?
So you're saying if you don't read Penthouse you'll live forever? Hmmm. Nope, I'll take the boobies, thanks.

Not that that makes it right...
