Ok, I was around back then. I dont remember the particular event but it was some random press conference right after DOS was released. Some reporter asked Gates why the 640K memory limit and this was his answer. It wasnt any sort of prediction, it was just an offhand comment to a reporter, from what I assumed at the time was a CEO who didnt really know all of the technical details behind what he was talking about. And dont forget that in 1981 640K was a helluva lot of memory (Apple II's shipped with 24K and were upgradable to 128K).

Not being a laywer, could Apple be doing this to negotiate a better licensing contract with Cisco? Or could this just be a Homer move on Apples part thinking they had longer to sign the contracts since they arent releasing the phone until June? (hard to believe) Apple must be intentionally letting this go to court for some reason, since they have been negotitiating with Cisco over the iPhone name for awhile now. One would think Apple would know exactly what would happen if they released another companies licensed product name without that companies approval.

Back that one up please, in my travels to several 3rd world countries, US companies are the bottom of the bucket. They dont offer any benefits, the hours are long and they pay just enough for someone to survive. Jobs in Japanese companies are probably the most desirable jobs in the world right now in third world countries, they usually give health care benefits, education benefits and tend to pay considerably higher than the national average. To someone in the third world it is a no brainer, go to work for Nike and at least you wont starve, go to work for Neikke and you are set for life (sorry couldnt help that).

  12. Re:The Price of Industry & Economics on Dark Cloud Over Good Works of Gates Foundation · · Score: 1

Well at least in one respect they would be better off without the company there because they wouldnt be getting "the cough".

You do realize that most third world countries allow these companies to operate tax free for so many years dont you? This is done in hopes that in the future when they do have to pay taxes the company is so entrenched in the country they cant easily pull out, which they do anyway. Any "taxes" levied are usually only called that on paper because bribery is considered unethical, and would probably cause a civil war. Nothing is going into improving education, quality of life for the people or developing the countries social infrastructure. If you actually think these companies are doing anything but just keeping these people alive so they can have a pool of cheap laborers is naive at best and outright blind idealism at worst. I know there are exceptions to the rule (companies that actually help third world countries, not sure if ENI is one of them or not but it doesnt sound like it in the article), but the number of companies just looking for a cheap labor pool far outnumbers the companies actually helping to improve conditions in any of these countries.

It is unethical for these foundations to be investing and supporting companies that are harming the very people they are trying to help, do you not see this? This is a very difficult issue to resolve, these foundations need to make money in order to keep up their humanitarian activities, but is maximizing profits really a necessary motivation behind a huminitarian organization? They should only be striving to break even each year and this should be easily attainable without having to invest in companies based on maximum return.

What I did say was that 2 very prestigious scientific organizations, have identified Exxon as a leader in the anti global warming camp and they are spreading mis-information about it. These arent a bunch of "leftists?" (I take you are an american conservative), they are well respected organizations (by both conservative and liberal scientists) in the scientific community (at least the Royal Society is, not sure if the NCS has been bought by the current admin yet, but I dont think so). If what Exxon was doing was scientific and had any credibility they wouldnt have even said anything.

I also asked you a question. Again, what will it take for you to admit that there may be a problem and it has to be taken seriously and investigated? When it is too late to do anything about it? Remember it is a majority of the scientific community claiming that global warming is a major contributor to the climate changes we have been expieriencing and that community is comprised of both conservative and liberal scientists. But it is just wrong to turn this into a liberal/conservative thing (both sides use it to push their agendas), it affects us all equally.

They are releasing FUD plain and simple. What is it going to take to make you believe that global warming is an issue that needs to be addressed, watching your children die of melanoma? I personally would like to find a solution before things like that start happening.
