  1. Re:Stock Options on Should the US Copy Switzerland and Consider a 'Maximum Wage' Ratio? · · Score: 1

    Firing all low wage employees wouldn't work if the indexing is done to the minimum wage in whatever region is appropriate (state, country, whatever) - not the minimum wage within the company.

    The swiss law is a great way to change the game incentives to promote a way that more people can gain instead of a lucky few.

  2. E E Doc Smith on Sci-Fi Books For Pre-Teens? · · Score: 1

    E E Doc Smith did great Space Opera genre - these were a great read as a kid for me. Particularly the Lensman series.

    As others have said, the Heinlein books targetted to youth are excellent as well - and can give a good lead in to his more political works later.

    Some of Arthur C Clarke's books might be appropriate as well.

    Julian May's Exile series - I remember enjoying that a lot.

    I'm sure you've done some googling, etc, but in case you haven't trying searching for terms such as "Space Opera", "Youth SF", etc. I'm sure that'll turn up a lot of information.

  3. More than just Solar vehicles. on World Solar Challenge Started in Australian Desert · · Score: 2, Informative

    This challenge is also for other forms of "clean"/"green" energy.

    For example, a team is entering a car powered completely by ethanol. They converted an 80 year old vintage car for the purpose.

  4. MMORPG != MMORTS on Sony's MMORPG "Sovereign" Dead · · Score: 5, Informative

    MMORPG is for roleplaying games.

    This was for a real time strategy game. MMORPG is incorrect. Not all massively multiplayer games are roleplaying games.

  5. Re:Enhydra on Ask Slashdot: Which Java Applications Server? · · Score: 1

    We've just finished developing our first major project using Enhydra. The system was developed on Linux using jdk117 and deployed to Solaris using jdk1.2, Apache and Jserv. Overall I have to say it works quite well.

    The development environment is good. We've made modifications to the Enhydra code in various areas and the response from the Lutris people in accepting and folding in the code has also been good.

    From postings on the mailing list, it appears that the usage of Enhydra is growing. Fortunately this is being matched by the submissions of bug fixes and new features from developers.

    Unfortunately, I can't objectively compare Enhydra to other app servers, however before we began this project, we did review a number of servers, including Locomotive and finally settled on Enhydra.
