Perhaps someone needs to have a small posting explaining to people exactly HOW X works, and that it's simply a way to display data, and how that data is handled is up to something else..

You don't need to have different Servers for different cards.. The SVGA server will work on nearly ANYTHING.. The additional servers merely take advantage of the capabilities of individual cards..
X is NOT a GUI.. It is simply a display driver.. I can make my GUI look like Windows, like a Mac, or anything else I wish.. That's the BENIFIT of X.. Moving the GUI away, and providing an extendable way to display things..
Err, sorry, but I must say thet is a VERY unfounded statement.. You'd be hard pressed to find a platform that DIDN'T support an X server.. Sure, not natively, but neither does ANY *nix.. They all rely on an X Server PROGRAM, not a native server within the OS..

So instead we should stifle choice and innovation by only replying on smaller choice? I disagree.. Heck, if Microsoft made hardware I'm sure they'd just LOVE this idea, now wouldn't they..
Instead of the Microsoft solution, you're stuck with the Sun Solution..
Your statment will hold true right up untill they start kicking non AIM clients off the server.. You see, the standard AIM client DOES spew out adds.. NON-AIM clients don't use it, but seeing as AOL removed all docs to the TOC protocol recently, I will NOT be suprised if they start banning NON AIM clients from the server totally..
Yea, at first I was impressed, but when I saw the RC part, the coolness factor went downhill..

Err, NONE of the mentioned are GUI's.. They are ALL interfaces..
And OpenGL is simply a way for software to talk to hardware, not an interface in and of itself.. Do you see ONE line of networking code in OpenGL?
PLEASE look before you leap (post) next time.. OpenGL has NOTHING to DO with the way X works, plain and simple..

X needs to move forward, but I'm not sure replacing X is the answer.. They need to extend new technolgies into X, and everything will be fine.. There is also GGI, which there are X servers for, which add alot more flexibility to the graphics systems..
Here's the thing.. I'd like to read the contract for service for any cable company who would use this technology. They could eventually end up with a law suit on their hands unless they worded it carefully..
AOL themselves welcomed this.. They did it by documenting the TOC protocol, and setting up TOC in and of itself.. TOC was designed and build strickly for external programs, plain and simple..
I suppose that slashdot is actually a nestbed for denial of service as well, due to the fact that we release links that tend to bring servers to their knees?
This sounds EXTREMELY interesting.. Many of these capabilities would be great things to incorperate into jabber (www.jabber.org), and are simular to some things we already have semi-working (digital signatures)..
Do you have a home page where I could get more information?
The technical SPECS exist in draft form, but as of yet, no predifined protocol exists.. If you want more information, zap me over an email and I can send you the draft RFC's..
