Well, others will disagree with some things I'll say, but here's the lowdown..
A Window manager is what takes care of placing and decerating the windows temselves.. KDE DOES use a seperate window manager called kwm. The window manager itself is something simular as if you didn't have a taskbar in Windows. The provide other ways to launch programs beside's that little start button. There's ALOT more to it here, but I'm trying to generalize.
I've heard of many good things about E on lower end machines, but be warned. The flashy themes you see on e.themes.org DO take gobs of memory.. E can be configured to use less memory, but you lose alot of flashyness. I use it on a 16 Meg machine with the 'Clean' theme, with little problems.. I've tried to add gnome to it, but the memory requirments of Gnome simply kill my little laptop..
The Window Manager != the Desktop system. Although, supposedly this wikll be the case in the future, aka, things for KDE console will work in Gnome console, and vice versa..
Ok, let's try this again.. A Java Applet is just a class file.. It serves up files, and runs *TADA* on your local machine. I regularly use a 386 to serve up files, including several very large applets..
Servlets run on a server, and this has NOTHING to do with them..
A) EMail has always been stored on a server. All they offer is a web based reader.. It is sent to a server, routed by servers, and delivered to the reader, from a server.
B) StarOffice running under Java is NOT RUNNING on the %#$&^&$*@#%#^$ server. Java does NOT RUN on the server, for CRYING the FRIG out loud.. The java class files are presented to the user is some way, and the JVM runs it..
This article is barking up the wrong tree.. There isn't any skunk up that tree..
And the internet is international. How do you impose taxes on that?
If a company has a web site in Canada, but operates in the US, how do you collect taxes from them? The sale, in traditional terms, took place it Canada.
I agree that money needs to be generated, and it's NOT pleasent, but to try to tax something like online sales is silly. The medium is international, and NOT simply the US..
No, we won't.. Slack is simply to slow adopting what ends up being pretty much standard.. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE slack, but the horrors of setting up international support, glibc, etc.. will mean I won't use it again..
I don't want to get stuck having to upgrade every package by source on the machine again.. I like to use alot of source, but some things just get to much..
Then you shouldn't ever buy anything from anyone with a credit card.. The majority of transactions happen with NO encryption.. Just becouse it's on an SSL connection when you send it, doesn't mean they keep it that way.. Trust me. And 'SPEC don't use Citibank.. Their idea of card encryption is a simple Capt. Crunch encoding..
I think this is do to the fact that Delphi developers are already using the non Microsoft solution, which makes them tend to be open to other platforms, while the VB/VC++ developers lock themselves in by falling in love with MFC and the such..
Well, this wasn't my original point, but since you've jumped on it..
You can customize pictures and colors with it.. Please, show me how I can make my Win32 machine look like a Mac.. And change the position/behavior or my start button..
Simply put, you can't without using a hack and replacing explorer..
Oh, and while your at it, I'd like my close window button on the window border to be in the lower right hand corner.. Can you please send me the theme where I can do that?
This is not all that window managers do.. They do Window Managment.. What to do with a window when I minimize it is a perfect example.. That's why it's called a Window MANAGER.. Notice the manager part in there?
Please, goto your NT box, and kill explorer, and tell me what you see.. Wow, it's still running, but with nothing on the screen.. It then immediatly RElaunches explorer..
Explorer is what provides the GUI.. As a matter of fact, you can replace explorer with something like Litestep, and have the same functionality, aka, another 'Window Manager' beside's explorer..
Gnome is not a Window Manager. (And looks NOTHING like Windows, I'm sorry.. Ok, it has buttons.. Anything with buttons = Win32??)
KDE is not a Window Manager.. (By default a little more simular, but still a HUGE difference)
You can run WindowMaker with Gnome OR KDE.. Blackbox and others as well..
PLEASE look before you leap.. Look at themes.org for examples of configurations that look NOTHING like the Win32 GUI..

Is X The Future?

Again, this is not a fault of X but simply bad PC graphics hardware
Never said it was X, but this is the result of many solutions, aka, choice.. This is a good thing.. Seemed that the point of the post was to say 'becouse PC graphic cards suck'.. Perhaps I misinterpeted..

IBM's big thing was typewriters.. ;-P
Xerox, well, speaks for itself..
Expanding into other areas doesn't kill a company.. Putting out crap, on the other hand, does.. I think Sun will do fine..

This is an article about adds on the web page, you ninny.. The adds will be on http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whoi s
Oh, if they DID end up having Linux, perhaps with a small X Server for it, that'd put me over the edge, and I'd simply HAVE to buy one..
That would be SO nice.. Apps would work under both Linux AND Win32.. Just a simple recompile..
To relient on technologies not available under Unix, IMHO..
If you want a taste of the old days, they DID open up the old Turbo C up to version 3.0 for FREE.. ;-P
Seems most are interested in developing for Linux using RAD.. The prefered RAD tool tends to be Delphi for those responding.. 'nough said.. ;-P

You could answer multiple choices on those questions..

Wow, you're so full of insight.. I wonder, do you have to change your phone number often to fend off the job offers?
Tell me, what DO you do with the millions people pay you for your wisdom..
I haven't looked at the CVS versions for a LONG time, but I can only hope that when 2.0 comes out, it'll be stable..
The more they rush, the worse they make Gnome look..
I did some research, and you're right.. It's only on the INTEL platform, I stand corrected..
Open Mouth.. Insert Foot.. ECHO INTERNATIONALLY.
