    Well, it's long term vs short term gains.. I cannot say I can think of ANY shop who hasn't had to spend time fixing NT related problems that occur, in both Workstation and Server versions. I can say that while it takes Linux longer to get set up and working as one would like, it is usually solid, and things don't start to 'break' as they can sometimes do with NT.. Linux is also much more versitile then NT tends to be on the server end.

    NT is a single user system with some multiuser abilities. *nix in general is a Multiuser system that can be USED as a single user system, but is not suited..

    IMHO.. NT on the desktop, Linux on the server = least support costs.. (IN THE LONG run..)

    AGREED! I am slowly getting used to SYSV init script, but they still annoy the heck outa me.. I love slackware, but I'm not sure WHY.. ;-P

    They exist becouse they CAN.. ONE of the wonders of open source, is people CAN fork, come out with different systems, etc..etc.., and everyone has the ability to make things compatible. BSD wants it their way. They've been around LONGER then Linux has. Good for them.. If we get some ideas from eachother, good for everyone.

    Since when have OS's become so communist? All for the good of all.. This is capitalism, BABY!!

    This is nearly identical to what I've seen happen on older 486 boxes as well.. Linux Slack works wonders, but perhaps it's just me that BSD doesn't seem to work quite as well under low memory conditions with a little swap..

    The name script kiddies is not meant to demean people who use scripts ;-P It means the 'cool kids' who download some scripts off of the net, and, since they can run them and bring some poor 60 year old womans Windows box to a halt, they call themselves 'Hackers'.. Don't get me started on this one.. ;-P

    They tend to write things like /00|_!! and the such.. ;-P

    It cannot.. It's IP. Technically speaking, no one could go out and 'steal' slashdot calling it backslash.org, with any legal grounds. It's IP. It is NOT free. Let's say Yahoo had taken slashdot before it became popular, called it oohay.net, and started raking in tons of money from banner ads (Ok, not likely to happen, as the audience wouldn't go, but you get the idea). The would have no legal ground, becouse it was Rob's IP. Now, there is a thin line between theft and use of a formatting that's really common, but heck.

    Want to know something else sick? If an Open Source author releases his sources at Geocities, yahoo can use them and completely disregard the GPL on it.

    I disagree.. If NT is percieved as being able to 'handle more' then Linux, then people will want the system that they feel 'can do more'. Same reason why there's so many jeeps, trucks, and sports cars. People don't NEED them, but they percieve that they need to buy what can 'do more'.

    They should have worded it differently.. With the current wording, if you put up content, they can literally steal it from under you without having to pay a dime for it. You throw up a web page that suddenly catches on for some reason or another, they can now use all of your works without having to pay a dime for them. There is NO limitation for this sort of thing. No, their lawyers aren't stupid, and could have easily added clauses in there, but they didn't..

    So, they expect people to just 'start donating' their IP, with the hope that Yahoo will agree with it, and not modify it to suite their needs? They honestly think that they can get away with this, with so many of the free web space providers out there without this stipulation?

    I say we all start setting up porn and Warez sites now, thousands at a time.. Let's see how fast they change their minds about owning rights to it all.. ;-P

    The problems that people are finding have nothing to do with what your saying.. Linux hits a 200 mbit limit, along with approx 2,000 transaction limit. The has to do with task scheduling, and the NON multitasking IP stack..

    A) Scripting:

    Please do a little more research.. ALL of these are available on NT already. Oh, and (*PPSSSTT*) Activestate is working with Perl and Perl alone. If you want bash, sed, awk, grep, and all of the toys, you should be kissing cygnus.. Oh, and did I mention gcc is there as well? ;-P

    B) X thru a 28.8 Line? You'[re lying really bad if you say that it's any better then ANY sort of dial up remote admin for NT.. MANY systems can be admined via telnet. And most of NT can be admined from a web browser (As can Linux)

    C) WWW Server Migration: Mute point, nothing to do with OSes here.. Just servers.. I can go from Apache/Linux to Apache/NT with no problem. Does NT now rock? ;-P

    D) A sysadmin who say's 'Like Unix or AS/400's' scares the hell outa me.. Lemme set you strait.. Unix = OS type. AS/400 = Hardware Platform. As of last month, I worked at UPS, who had the largest installed base of RS/600's and AS/400's in the friggen world, so please don't try to impress me. Also, 3 years and working as a sysadmin designing a multimillion dollar ecommerce project. Doesn't add up.

    The test was not as screwed as you made it out to be.. They had SIMULAR results. The first test didn't tune Linux as well.. BIG DEAL.. Linux got it's but kicked from a technical standpoint, hands down.. It's a sad day, but I was afraid that this is EXACTLY what was going to happen..

    This guy also needs to do some more research on some things..

    A) Why would anyone use Samba on a T1 line? Samba is a file server, the majority of which are used to serve files via a LAN, NOT a WAN. LAN speeds go from 2 (10Base2) to 1,000 (Gigabit ether).

    B) The speed limit on I-93 is 65. I have 2 cars, a Ford Taurus, and a Porche. Both can do the speed limit, little over every onmce and a while, EASILY.. Which do I choose WHEN COST is NOT the issue? (I am NOT saying that NT is a Porche, but the tests make the comparisons look simular)

    There is no MS Visual C++ managment system. There is Source Safe. And if you are relying on SourceSafe, you have one MAJOR DISADVANTAGE. You are RELYING on having some sort of drive mapping to the data files. Visual SourceSafe cannot, to my knowledge, work with a client that simply passes data thru a socket. Remote users now need the overhead of full fledged NetBUI over IP to use it..

    Don't even get me started on what happens when the drive goes down in the middle of a large update..

    I agree.. It's undermining the CVS user base by suddenly saying that they will, in the future, not have a paid way to provide support for the product. I'm honestly suprised that seeing as how much Red Hat uses the entire CVS system, that they don't take up where he's leaving off. Since he's there anyway, they may as well make money off it..

    No, you don't need to include it as part of the package, you simply need to make it available. If I ship a stock version of something, I DIDN'T MAKE ANY CHANGES, I don't have to worry about the GPL, I didn't change it in any way, so the source is already out there. Worst case, an 'Appendix A' in the user manual saying where the sources can be gotten..

    I don't see how they COULD do it at all, without making some sort of hooks in the OS itself. A Bios couldn't really DO it at all, unless Windows itself can take 'boot parameters'..
